Rap: Why does it get such a bad "rap " around here

Recommended Posts

Well, considering the guitarist of Body Count is dead, it wouldn't be the same.

I think Stuck Mojo should have rode the wave of rap/rock bands. Awesome music, GREAT lyrics (especially on Declaration Of A Headhunter), and a frontman that could RAP. Fuck you, LB.

I think the only thing that didn't help was that the "Rising" video featured Raven, The Flock, and DDP. Wrestlers in videos = bad mainstream exposure.

Unless you're talking about one of the greats of the genre a drummer and a guitarist are replaceable. I may be wrong, but I don't believe Body COunt had "one of the greats" as a drummer or guitarist.

With Anthrax, the help of Public Enemy sampling one of their riffs, Anthrax would not write some of the songs because of the rap influence, and it shows in some of their songs, such as "Indians"

Sean Paul sticks out because he is not a RAPPER. His music might be played when rap music is played, but it's not rap music.

Sean Paul tries to sing reggae, but he is no Bob Marley.

Then again, most people can't come close to what Bob Marley has done.

Just weighing in...

Why do rap apologists equate rap not being music with rap not requiring talent? Rap takes a lot of talent, but it's talent of the poetic/lyrical/speaking variety. Good, non-gangsta rap is an artform, just not a musical one. What makes Outkast great musically is the fact that much of their stuff isn't rap, (if there is melody) it's hip-hop that contains rap. And Andre is insanely talented. The Roots use real musical instruments, so the emphasis on music is there. Their bass player is awesome. And no, a turntable is not a musical instrument. Does it take an insane amount of talent to work? Yes. Do I wish I could do it? No doubt. Musical instrument? No.

Why are you talking about Bob Marley, man? Do you have to be better than Bob Marley to be a reggae singer now?

I think a better comparison would be Shabba Ranks or Elephant Man.

No, I just think Bob Marley is the best at reggae.

Agent, Rap doesn't have to be about hardships all time. Shit, Bubba Sparxxx raps about how country he is. You could rap about anything like state current affairs to going to the laundry mat.

I want to beat Bubba Sparxxx with a shoe.

Regarding the hardships/random topics/etc as rap topics, that's true for any genre. I'm just a whole lot better at writing a 12 second grindfest called "Scalding Anus Chowder" than I am at writing a smooth rap number about getting an enema full of boiling Campbells.
