WWE Notes: Steiner, Triple H/HBK, Rumble

Recommended Posts

I didnt really keep track, but I coulda sworn it went about 25:00. THATS NOT LONG ENOUGH!? 15:00, then fine complain, but jesus, they got nearly half an hour with mainly brawling.

To be fair, they kept the crowd enthralled the entire time, and with a finish that match would have been the favorite of the night for the Philly crowd.

I can't speak for the whole crowd, but myself & the people around me were getting quite bored w/ the match as it drug mercilessly on.

I was the opposite. The first half of the match bored me, but the last half had me hooked.

I live outside Philly (Fairless Hills) and not only did I watch it on PPV and saw a very hot crowd (and one that was rightfully pissed at the finish) but everyone I go to school with who saw it said they loved it too. That's what I was basing that on.

I was there, and in the upper level. A lot of the people in my section were just sitting around for the last half of the match, not really doing much of anything.

You liked it - great. Personally, I just found it extermely boring after the table bump.

My point wasn't that *I* liked it. It was that multiple people I know, AND the crowd to the best of my ability to tell over PPV liked it as well.

HHH/Michaels, Royal Rumble 2004 - 22:45.

HHH/Jericho, Fully Loaded 2000 - 23:13.

Yep.

No shit. I would have guessed that the Y2J/HHH match was a lot longer. I dunno, I was entertained by the match, but it did seem rushed. I thought maybe if they had like 5 more minutes, they could have done a better 'transition', sort of speak, between the actual wrestling, and the close 10-counts phase.

Ok... let me get this straight... you guys crap on HHH all the time for not having good matches. So he has what is, in his opinion, a sub-par match, has the balls to stand up and admit that it was sub-par and that he wished he would have had more time to tell the story right, and still you crap on him. I am confused...

Oh wait... no I'm not. I forgot that everything HHH does is evil, HHH is the great satan and he could never, ever put anyone over.

You're right CC... and for that I apologize...

I just get so frustrated with Smarks deciding certain wrestlers will always suck, or will always have bad matches, or will always be locker-room cancers (mind you, sweeping generalizations themselves) that I get a little angry.

I just can't see it...

HHH has actually improved a great deal since WM XIX. His matches since that point (barring the Kevin Nash feud) were a lot better then the ones before. Hell, we might have noticed it sooner had it not been for Steiner.

No.....

I'm crapping on him for getting more time than all the other matches combined and still whining that he needed more. The match was sub-par from them lying around the whole match. How is an extra 10-15 minutes going to fix that?

I see. Well, I have to disagree with you. However, I wonder what you were expecing from a match with a ten second count on it? By definition, there will be vast stretches of match that are one or both guys lying around for 8 or 9 seconds at a time.

And I don't think he was "whining". I think he was expressing a simple thought that, given more time, they could have changed the story and psychology of the match, spreading the "two guys down" sections out a little and not starting them so early in the match.

Besides, when have you ever heard a wrestler who is proud of their work say "Man, I'm glad I only had a little time to tell that story" when they had a short match or a time limit?

I guess my thing is this: if this had been a Benoit / Angle match, and Angle afterwards said "It wasn't as good as it could have been. I think we could have done better with more time" everyone would be complaining that WWE booked a match they clearly didn't have enough time for on the PPV. Nobody would have said that Angle / Benoit was "whining".

Its a double standard, it is short sighted and unfair to the wrestlers.

Look at DDP/Savage from Halloween Havok 97. Two much more limited workers and they put on a much better match. There was little if any laying around till the very end of the match.

Of course there's a double standard.

Wrestlers that have good matches on a consistent basis and don't bore the hell out of me anytime they enter the ring are going to get more leeway than those that bore me and put on consistent shitty matches.

That's the way it is in life.

I would love it if Rey Mysterio came out and said he didn't think he put on a good match and wishes he had another 30-45 seconds to tell a better story.

Absolutely, I'm crapping on him for that. He knew full well what time constraints he was going to have to work with in that match (and really, 22-25 minutes is NOT that short of a match), yet still chose to move at the speed of molasses. It's his own damn fault. Much more has been done in a match with much less time.
