The official off season NFL thread

"Portis will sign an eight-year deal that is worth $50.5 million and includes $17 million in combined signing and option bonuses, several league sources confirmed for ESPN.com."

Do the Redskins understand the idea of a salary cap? Where are they getting all this room to spend money?

The deal minus the signing bonus is only 33.5 mill and most is probably weighted towards the back end of the contract.

It's official...

Salary cap guides 49ers' decision

ESPN.com

The 49ers officially notified quarterback Jeff Garcia on Monday night that he will be placed on waivers Tuesday, ESPN.com has learned.

Garcia's release will come before Tuesday 4 p.m. ET deadline for all teams to be in compliance with the NFL's $80.6 million cap ceiling.

The news comes as no surprise after Garcia rejected a cut in his base salary from $9 million to $5 million over the weekend. His cap number had gone beyond $12 million because of an escalator clause that transformed his base salary into the league's franchise number for quarterbacks. Garcia earned in excess of $20 million over the last two seasons -- more than any quarterback.

The clause was put into his contract to give his agent and the 49ers a chance to determine where they stood in their relationship. Garcia, 34, has been to three Pro Bowls in his five seasons with the 49ers and has quarterbacked one of the league's most exciting offenses.

49ers general manager Terry Donahue said last Friday that Garcia's status would be resolved Monday. San Francisco-area media arrived at the team's complex Monday but, late in the day, team officials said there would be no announcement before Tuesday. It is believed that Donahue and agent Steve Baker spoke briefly Monday night about Garcia's status.

The 49ers are in the midst of a tumultuous offseason because of the salary cap. They released left tackle Derrick Deese last week and plan to cut guard Ron Stone later Tuesday. San Francisco also plans to go without free agents Tai Streets and Terrell Owens in its receiving corps, although Owens is technically still with the team because his agent failed to file a timely void in the final three years of his contract by the deadline.

Garcia offered to return if the 49ers made up the $4 million difference in incentives. Instead, they were willing to give back to him $1.5 million if he reached his incentives. He finally said no. His departure will save the 49ers roughly $2 million against the cap.

Garcia's departure will elevate four-year veteran Tim Rattay to the starting spot. A former seventh-round draft choice, Rattay, 26, played well at times last season, winning two of three starts in place of an injured Garcia. He will have a difficult time, though, matching Garcia's numbers.

Signed as a free agent in 1999 after a successful CFL career, Garcia started in 71 of his 74 appearances as a Niner. He completed 1,449 of 2,360 passes for 16,408 yards, with 113 touchdown passes, 56 interceptions and a passer rating of 88.3.

The former San Jose State star threw for more than 3,000 yards three times and had a 4,000-yard season in 2000. He twice threw more than 30 touchdown passes and was named to the Pro Bowl squad on three occasions.

Meanwhile on Monday, Garcia's arraignment on drunken-driving charges was delayed until March 15. He faces two misdemeanor charges from his arrest on Jan. 14. According to San Jose police reports, Garcia's blood-alcohol level was .237 -- nearly three times the legal limit in California -- when he was pulled over.

If it ends up causing Harrison and/or James to leave due to cap issues, no way. The Colts weren't exactly in great cap shape before this deal, and this might not help much.

The Boston Herald reported yesterday that Ted Washington was "within 24-48 hours" of signing a new deal with the Pats, but his agent calls that report "premature." Also, Ty Law rejected the Pats' first contract offer, calling it a "slap in the face".

Guest The Winter Of My Discontent

No one in the NFL should be paid 99 million dollars. Manning isn't close to worth that much money. He had one good year, he could choke the next. I'd have let him go and maybe pad my defense a little more.

And getting Kitna would leave Eli Manning for the Raiders!

Yes!

Nah, San Diego would just trade down with someone who desperately needs a QB. Like Miami or Arizona.

No. They would probbaly go for Larry Fitzgerald.

Kiper says it's either a QB (Manning or Roethlisberger) or a trade down to the double digits for the Chargers - it's just a matter of deciding whether Brees is their "quarterback of the future" or not.

DENVER -- Ed McCaffrey, the sure-handed receiver who became a fan favorite and one of John Elway's primary targets, retired from the Denver Broncos on Tuesday after a 13-year NFL career.

McCaffrey, 35, finished his career with 565 catches for 7,422 yards and 55 touchdowns. In 2000 he set a then-franchise record with 101 catches and established a career high with 1,317 yards.

After three seasons with the New York Giants and one with San Francisco, McCaffrey joined the Broncos as an unrestricted free agent in 1995, the same year Mike Shanahan became head coach. His ability to make tough catches over the middle made him a fan favorite.

A starter on the Broncos' Super Bowl winners in 1998 and 1999, he also earned a Super Bowl ring with the 49ers in 1995.

Injuries, however, began to take their toll.

He broke both bones in his lower left leg in the first game of 2001 and missed the rest of that season. He returned the next year to catch 69 passes for 903 yards.

McCaffrey missed four games last season because of groin and tendon injuries, and did not play in Denver's wild-card loss to Indianapolis after suffering two concussions in a three-week period. He finished the year with 19 catches for 195 yards.

The Broncos told McCaffrey they wanted to cut his $4.5 million base salary for next season to help get under the salary cap.

"After 13 amazing years of professional football, I've decided that for me, for my career and for my family the time has come for a change," McCaffrey said . "And I am proud to retire as a Denver Bronco. I feel like the luckiest man alive."

He said physically he feels great and was cleared to play a week ago.

"One of the things that feels good to me is I'm making a choice," he said. "I could have been out of the league when I was released by the Giants. I could have been out of the league when I broke my leg. Right now I have a chance to play again, but I feel like the time is right. I feel really good about my decision."

Injuries, he said, "are part of the reason I'm retiring, but I would never retire just for that reason."

He also insisted that contract negotiations were not a factor. "Financially, I feel pretty secure," he said.

A fearless downfield blocker, McCaffrey was perhaps best known for the hits he took on the field.

"No receiver in the NFL wants to be remembered for how many times they got hit hard," he said. "Speed, great hands, scoring touchdowns -- but not getting crushed. But, hey, at least people will remember me. That's the only way I knew how to play the game."

An emotional Shanahan called McCaffrey the "most complete player" he has ever coached.

"He took pride in catching the football, as well as blocking," Shanahan said. "That's why he's so special."

Bowlen said he will remember McCaffrey as the "bravest and most courageous player to play for the team."

Word on Philly talk radio today is that the Eagles are very close to completing a deal to bring in the Freak, Jevon Kearse. Would be a nice aquisition since they didn't really have any DE's that could play.

Damn, Ted Washington leaving will hurt our 3-4 defense. However he was asking for far too much of a man his age.

Philli might want to you know...work on its Run stop and offense. It has one of the better pass rushes in the game.

The Eagles had ZERO pass rush last year. Their leading DE in sacks I think was ND Kalu with around 3 sacks.

I will hold off judgement of this signing until the rest plays out. If they still have the cash to fill the other holes with quality then I really like this signing.

The Eagles may have been 9th in sacks, but they did not consistently get pressure on the QB. A lot of their sacks come from the blitzing scemes that Johnson has the Defense run, which they will have to limit in the upcoming years without a shutdown cornerback.

The Defensive ends were completely worthless last year. Assuming they go out and get a good WR, this is a great signing.
