Well France can't stay the Arab's Euro-darling for long after this. Pleanty of low income Muslim families will be "encouraged" by their leaders to blow a ton of money to get their kids radicalized in Madrassas or they will simply not be educated at all. Either way they'll become isolated and more xenophobic than they are now in France. Other European nations will catch on (Germany already has) and before you know it we'll have a very nasty situation in Europe. But all that is ok, so long as secularism is preserved. Too bad us primitive, backward Americans can not see the wise moves of our European betters and still cling to our meaningless first amendment.

Well, maybe once France brings this shit upon themselves they'll be a little more helpful and sympathetic to our situation...

I'm not really sure that any of us (Ameri/Canadians especially) are really able to make an accurate judgment on what the French rationale is here; i don't believe there isn't a single (frequent) poster on this board who hails from anywhere in continental Europe. It would be nice if there was one so we could get their perspective on this.

 

At any rate, I feel that if 70% of the French wanted it to happen, then they obviously thought it was a good idea. It doesn't matter what WE think about the situation; none of us can do a damn thing about it (except repeat the same old bigoted jokes about France, of course).

 

If the French turn out to be wrong, well, then they'll probably learn a painful lesson as a result.

I made this point earlier on. Muslim women in France DON'T WANT to wear headscarves. But because it's so ingrained into the culture, it's seen as an outrage that they're actually getting their wish. The caveat of the new law is that it will be reviewed again in one year's time, so if things are really not working out, Europe has collpased into medieval chaos and we are gripped solidly by a Crusade in 12-months time, then I guess they'll repeal the law.

 

As an experiment in reducing the influence of religion (ALL religion) in the classroom, I still think it's a brave and important measure to take. It's all-inclusive, it's not against any one minority or majority group. If anything, lumping people of all religions together against normal people may even make them band together over the injustice and having their freedoms of expression limited. And then everyone buys each other a coke and sings on a hilltop, the end. Goooo Frenchy!
