Art Sandusky Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 Okay, Body Language was released in the US this week (naturally I was at the store when they opened, foregoing the first part of my Acting 1 class). Great, US exposure is good... right? WRONG! This is the SECOND TIME NOW that they've released her album the sales week after the Grammys. In 2002, Fever debuted at #3 behind a pair of albums that would not have been there had it not been for their post-Grammy bounce (especially the O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack, which won Album of the Year in 2002, jumping back to #1 after being somwhere between 50-100 the previous week). So now she's screwed AGAIN. The worst part is that this is really her last shot to be big in the US. So I'm saying that Capitol Records is out to keep the vastly superior to anything else on their label (save Radiohead, with whom she shares supremacy) Ms. Minogue from selling well. Why wouldn't they want her to sell well, she's on their label and it would hurt more than help, right? Not when you've got philistines in charge, no siree pop. Motherfuckers. (fumes until he can come up with more ways that the US music industry is trying to bilk her out of her due success) EDIT: Go here to hear tracks from the album and see why they're so goddamn jealous of her.
Dr. Tom Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 I guess I'm trying to figure out how having the #3 record in the country, as opposed to the #1 record, really damages an artist's career.
Art Sandusky Posted February 12, 2004 Author Report Posted February 12, 2004 IT WOULD HAVE BEEN #1, DAMMIT!!! (EDIT: This is in HD and not Music because, well, it isn't "intelligent" enough)
Dr. Tom Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 (edited) I guess I'm trying to figure out how having the #3 record in the country, as opposed to the #1 record, really damages an artist's career. Edited February 12, 2004 by DrTom
Art Sandusky Posted February 12, 2004 Author Report Posted February 12, 2004 That they did it not once, but TWICE (with results pending on this latest muckup) is the irking part. And: IT WOULD HAVE BEEN #1, DAMMIT! The American music market only stands up and takes notice if (without critical support, which she has little of) there's some massive sales numbers to make a buzz. And buzz? HAH! She's considered too old for MTV at the ABSOLUTELY GERIATRIC AGE~ of 35, so they half-heartedly pushed her on TV and Capitol didn't even release her actual second single ("In Your Eyes") here, causing a lull between CGYOOMH and LAFS.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 Quoting your own post and then adding nothing to it? DrTom; The Man Who Needs No Explenation!
Dr. Tom Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 And a #3 record doesn't have "massive sales numbers?" It's the bloody #3 record, for heaven's sake. It has to be moving in significant numbers to be that high on the list.
Art Sandusky Posted February 12, 2004 Author Report Posted February 12, 2004 #3 is good enough for anyone else. For us fans, no, and especially when it would have been #1 had it been released even a week earlier or a week later.
Art Sandusky Posted February 12, 2004 Author Report Posted February 12, 2004 Body Language < Fever Blasphemy. Body Language is #2 only behind Impossible Princess.
Mik Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 Man, stop whining. It doesn't matter this year because Norah Jones will crush all competition. For what it's worth, I'm a big Kylie fan after living in Melbourne and seeing her parents house and where she used to live. Not to mention the entire country loves her and plays her music all the time. I grew to love it. I picked up the album, and it's one of her best, IMO. There might not be a single artist who could release an album this week and outsell Norah Jones.
Art Sandusky Posted February 12, 2004 Author Report Posted February 12, 2004 Man, stop whining. NEVER!
k thx Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 Body Language < Fever Blasphemy. Body Language is #2 only behind Impossible Princess. IP is way too patchy. The singles are great, but the rest lets it down.
Art Sandusky Posted February 12, 2004 Author Report Posted February 12, 2004 You're right, choosing a best work of hers would be like choosing between my children, if I had any.
k thx Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 It's a good thing. You'd only sell them for Kylie albums.
Art Sandusky Posted February 12, 2004 Author Report Posted February 12, 2004 Or at least a ticket to London so I could follow the paparazzi around in hopes of seeing her and perhaps... (gasp) talking to her~!
k thx Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 I can go to London and stalk her whenever I want. HA!
spiny norman Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 I actually think Body Language is her worst album thus far. Rhythm Of Love and Kylie Minogue are her two best anyway.
justsoyouknow Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 Which Kylie album has "Your Disco Needs You" on it? Because whichever album has that song on it is the best album ever. There's really no contest there. I dare you to name a better song.

There's really no contest there. I dare you to name a better song. Bohemian Rhapsody. Well played. I meant a better Kylie song, though. And Kotz, Kylie IS old. You have to face it. Does AC/DC get a huge push every time they release an album? Did Kiss get a huge marketing campaign when they realeaed Kiss Symphony? I went to Best Buy last night, and they must have had at least 200 of the Body Language CDs. It was insanity...that CD alone covered at least three columns in the row. So it's not like there's a lack of product out there. Maybe Kylie just isn't as marketable as you think?
Youth N Asia Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 At the Target I work at it's on sale for $9.99 and they haven't been selling a ton. The display's almost the same since it came out.
Art Sandusky Posted February 12, 2004 Author Report Posted February 12, 2004 It's been bungled thus far in the US, I can tell you that much. I haven't seen "Slow" or "Red Blooded Woman" on MTV yet. Looks like she's going to have to go back to being huge everywhere but here again. And Jon, "Your Disco Needs You" is on Light Years.
justsoyouknow Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 Confide In Me > Any other Kylie song. The video is what makes that song. "Your Disco Needs You" is just comedic gold, no video neccessary.
spiny norman Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 Confide In Me > Your Disco Needs You Better The Devil You Know > Confide In Me
Art Sandusky Posted February 13, 2004 Author Report Posted February 13, 2004 Confide In Me > Any other Kylie song. The video is what makes that song. "Your Disco Needs You" is just comedic gold, no video neccessary. You think they have COMEDIC value? Okay, you're cut off. I thought you actually liked it.
Rob E Dangerously Posted February 13, 2004 Report Posted February 13, 2004 The cruel Kylie conspiracy to make her only #3 appears to be going as planned.
