Madonna is "old" also, but she got started in this country early, and unlike Kylie (who was only 19 when "Locomotion" was enjoying airplay), kept the momentum up. I think that even had Kylie kept the "Locomotion" momentum up, she would have gone down in the pop backlash of the early-mid 90s. Heck, it (and conflicts with her label) are what brought her down in Australia and Britain. She's just considered too old to be hip, I guess.

If she was a male singer who was 35, would everyone be complaining about him being too old to be any good? In fact, Bruce Springsteen was 35 when he did his Born In The USA album. John Lennon was 35 when he did Mind Games. Hell, Madonna was doing Erotica at 35. I don't see how it's a big problem.

I don't know enough about Springsteen to say anything. It's a double standard. The female wannabe pop star has to be younger than the wannabe male pop star.

He released three albums in that ten year span, and while two of them went Top Ten in the charts, neither had any major single hits. It's hard to find an equivalent to Kylie's successes in the US, male or female. I can't think of anyone who was a one-hit wonder for fifteen years and then suddenly came in strong. *awaits Tiffany's next album*

That said, my roommate bought it, and it's pretty sweet. But yeah, I don't know if anything will ever top the bizarre glory of "Your Disco Needs You." It's also not as immediately catchy as the best stuff off Fever, but it feels like a grower. Also, the liner notes are on the glossiest paper I've ever seen. Fluids just slide right off! I'd already played it for everyone, and they ALL agree that it's hilarious. Anyway, we were all just sitting around the fire drinking, and when the song came up, every guy jumped up and started dancing like we were at a rave. So there were a bunch of drunk guys dancing like ravers to "Your Disco Needs You"...I thought you'd enjoy that. Always thinking about you, Spoon. Always thinking.

Guest croweater Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 Impossible Princess is far and away the greatest Kylie album. Kotz is right. Fever should have been #1 in America. The problem with Body Language is that "slow" isn't the most catchy and marketable song (and it's that good either). It took a while to grow on me because it seemed like a far weaker version of Can't get you out of my head. Red blooded woman is much better. However, "Body language" I don't think has gotten to number 1 here in Australia in the midst of all of the Australian Idol crap that teeny boopers are buying, however, while the AI guys got #1 and then completely dropped out Kylie has maintained top 10 scince BL's release. But it's hard to compete with the crapfest of Australian idol AND an over hyped cancer victim so Kylie's doing well.

They think it's selling out to the American style of pop music, and I can see what they mean, but just because it sounds like that doesn't mean she did it to be that particular current sound. But it was genius to have it be the first US single instead of Slow, which I'm not a big fan of, song or video.

EDIT: A quick trip over to the SayHey forums provided the reason for the low debut... IMPORT EDITIONS!! Apparently in the larger citites, at Virgin megastores and stuff, there were import copies from its original release back in November. One would think that the fans who had places like this nearby got their copy back in November. Also, a little ol' rapper by the name of 50 Cent debuted at 40-something also... not all is lost. If the normal promotional avenues won't work, I trust word of mouth to spread that this is a really really good album.

I think the thing is that "Fever" had a huge marketing force behind it as well as a catchy as hell single. "Body Language" doesn't have the same Aura that "Fever" did regardless of its quality. Art Sandusky Posted February 28, 2004 Author Report Posted February 28, 2004 I wanted to note that after almost three weeks of ownership of this album and after more listenings than you want to know, that... 1) this now beats out Impossible Princess for overall musical quality, although IP remains the most personal. 2) The songs on the album that Kylie wrote are the best. I'm not just saying that, they were my favorites when I downloaded them back in November, and had no idea they were the Kylie-penned songs. 3) My top three are now "Promises" (fucking awesome melody), "Red Blooded Woman" (after I learned that she says "I'm a Red Blooded Woman, what's the point in hanging round?" I previously had no clue what was being said there), and "Sweet Music" (the best dance track on the album, sez I). Yeah, a senseless bump, but I just wanted to share this. Oh yeah, those that don't have this album, GET IT, GODDAMMIT. It's legit really good, and that isn't Fanboy Spoon talking, it's Music Listener Spoon talking.
