WB Cancels Angel...

Recommended Posts

In Zsasz's absence, I'll just say that he knows the difference between Smallville and Superman.

bps' comparison of the two shows was dumb. Just because Smallville is about teenagers and unusual powers/villains doesn't mean that they're ripping off Buffy.

Wow...I'm shocked some people didn't understand what I wrote.

Smallville. Uses. The. Exact. Same. Formula. That. Buffy. Was. Using. Eight. Years. Ago.

The only real difference is that they develop things much slower...and Lex Luther is WAYYY cooler than anyone that was on Buffy.

Ok...I see we're still not there.

You know how on Smallville weird things keep happening to people because of the meteor rocks? The meteor rocks are the reason for every strange thing in town.

Still there?

On Buffy they had a hellmouth to explain away all the weird things.

Still there?

Bueller?

Yeah, but bps, your exact words were "I can't get out of my head how bad this show wants to be Buffy." I took that as meaning "Smallville is trying to rip off Buffy", which I don't see as being true. If that's not what you meant, then my bad.

That's not what I meant. What I meant was the writing structure of either show could be stripped down and you could flop casts and the episodes would work.

For example.

Kid falls through the ice and he can't keep warm so he kills all these people to get their body heat. The superpowered teen uses his friends help to figure out what happened, they solve it and the teen goes out to confront and stop the bad guy.

That was a Smallville episode from season 1.

That would fit as an episode in Sunnydale from the high school years as well.

When I said it want's to be Buffy...I was just tongue in cheekly skipping writing all that and saying "Smallville's episodes are like the early Buffy years".

Which...I really think they are...

but again...Buffy never had a bad ass character like Lex Luther.

Yeah, I don't think there's ever been somone on Buffy who's as bad ass as Lex.

All this Smallville/Buffy talk just made me think how AWESOME a Buffy/Smallville crossover episode would have been.

Well, I would have marked out for it anyway.

Babylon 5 and Farscape are two shows that I _should_ be into, given my preferences, but have yet to fully realize.

You should be into them.

Both are infinitely better than Firefly.

That's just not plausible.

FYI: It's "Luthor," not "Luther."

A VERY common mistake.

Oh, and a Buffy/Smallville crossover wouldn't have worked. For one thing, there are Superman references in Buffy. Not to mention references to other super-heroes (from both DC and Marvel).

Ugh, I never really saw Lex being THAT cool. Spike from season 2 was much cooler than Lex.

Agreed, I love Lex but Spike in his evil days as well as Angelus can definately give him a run for his money in the bad-assness department :D

Yeah, I can see the point you guys are making. Being vampires gave Angelus/Spike the reason and means to be bad asses, but Lex is just nasty on his own.

I'm surprised they never let Willow kill some vamps once she got crazy with her magic powers. It would have been really easy. Fire spell, that's it.

Not everything Joss touches turns to gold.

Firefly is THE example of that.

Well if ya wanna get into some bad-assness from non-demon/vampires I know where to go. I know the question was about charecters specifically from Buffy but if ya go over to Angel you find two of the best in Lindsey and of course the vicious bitch in my sig by the name of Lilah Morgan :D

I don't know about Lindsey, but Lilah was definitely a bad ass (and pretty hot too).

More bad ass than Lex? Hmm... I don't know if I'd go that far, but it's close. Lex has come up against some Lilah-esque women on Smallville, and he usually seems to get the better of them

When was the last time Lex had his hand cut off and beat the shit out of someone with a sledgehammer?

Nuff said. ;)

Oh, he'd do it.

Don't get me wrong, I like Lindsey. But he always seemed like kind of a punk to me.

True, but that's his character's charm. It makes you HATE his guts. ;) Lex just comes across as really.. sleazy and smarmy.

I think I'd describe Lex as sleazy. He's really smart, which puts him a few steps ahead of whoever he's going against at the time. This allows him to get the upper hand in ways that might seem sleazy, but it's really just business, which, to him is nothing more than war without the battlefield.

He doesn't become sleazy until he's older :)

True! :)

My only question is - is when they DO get older and move on to Metropolis.. do they change the name of the show? ;)

That would explain why he becomes President. (in the comics, that is)

As for Buffy/Smallville, why not? Although personally I just want to see a crossover featuring Bo Duke and Quark...

And speaking of Quark, the whole Buffyverse/Trek thing going on in 24 (ok, more Buffy than Trek) isn't complete until Armin Shimmerman shows up, is it?

Well, they'd probably end the show before that point. Because Clark would really be the only one moving away to Metropolis (I guess Chloe could go with him, but then there'd be no room for Lois).

I'd love to see the show evolve into another Lois & Clark, but it won't happen. I'd actually be surprised if the show goes past them in high school.

"We regret to inform the cast, crew and fans of the Smallville series this will be it's final year on the WB. While it has proven it's case in terms of ratings, merchandise, fanbase and longevity, we here at the WB feel there is a need to make room for reruns of other shows and more RealityTV. Ditto. I'm already pretty annoyed at how long it's taking them to release the Season 2 DVD's...

How would they manage to stretch high school to 5 years though? Get rid of some of the females and replace them with a chick in leather named Tori?

I guess the thing is that because of what we know about Clark Kent, Smallville has a built-in limitation of how long it can go.

Yeah. I wish it were the same as 24 or Shield where the previous season is already out on DVD weeks before the new season starts.
