WWE News from the 2/23 Observer

From The Wrestling Observer Newsletter

Michaels suffered a torn ACL. either in his Raw match a few weeks back with Orton, or in his singles match with Flair in Hiroshima. He's working through it because he's in a major Mania program

The company is doing a $5 million ad campaign for Wrestlemania, between TV ads, print ads, a 4 paged ad section in both the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and the Entertainment Weekly Oscars issue, plus pizza box ads, billboards and taxis. To make up $5 million, they would have to do 220,000 extra buys. If you figure with no outside ad campaign they'd do 550,000 minimum, to make it worthwhile they'd have to get it up to 770,000.

In he WWE lawsuit against 37 Canadian bars for illegaly airing PPV events, ther is belief that the total damages could come to more than $1 million. Damages will be calculated by a combination of $1,500 for every illegal showing of a PPV by a bar, plus a rate to be determined later.

Ther is nothing new on Bret Hart and Wrestlemania. It appears unlikely anything will happen on it.

Linda Miles got even more heat on her this past week. The feeling is that she does not take wrestling seriosly enough. Unlike most on the roster, she didn't grow up a fan. On 2/7 in Regina, she was supposed to train, but, not her fault, it took forever to get through customs and they barely got enough people there in time to start the show. She promised to come in the next day for a session with the Bashams, Hass & Benjamin. They all came, for her benefit, but she no showed.

Out of 124 shows on prime time network television, Smackdown in No. 121, ahead of only the dying Rock Me Baby, the nearly dead Mullets, and UPN Night at the Movies. The upside is that the cost of the show is far less than just about any show on television, so it is profitable even though it's 3.4 rating delivers ad rates of a show that would do well below a 2.0

Matt Morgan is going to be given hands on training from Tom Pritchard from this point forward. Morgan is very well liked by just about everyone, but the reality is he was not ready when he was brought up, which has oftenbeen a broken record when it comes to big guys.

The World Wildlife Fund has sold the rights to the wwf.com web site name to a group calling themselves Web Wrestling Forum, which is a pro wrestling news group. Granted, Vince asked for problems when he agreed not to market the WWF initials outside of North America and then did so. But if the fund believed the web site was such a major issue in market confussion, it wouldn't have sold the domain name to a pro wrestling group.

That happened a LONG time ago.

That' rather funny.

No wonder Benoit was working so hard in their match.

And I love the sig, Tawren. Ride the Walrus.

HBK held the belt with a jacked up back for a while. I didn't notice much aggrivation on RAW, besides some slight limping/knee holding. I wouldn't see any reason he couldn't hold the title while trying to work with the pain. I, myself, wouldn't, because that could ruin his knee more in the long run (or what's left of his knee I should say).

Hmm...

That's odd, when you factor in traveling costs, a far larger "cast," the costs to ship the large sets, probably needing far more cameras and a larger production crew, more shows needing to be produced in fewer time, etc. I'd think it would be more.

Or do they mean cost for the network, which would be very little?

HBK has a torn ACL? There's no way they can put the title on him at WM...can they?

Just look at who has the belt on RAW before you ask that question.

Couldn't of said it better myself.

So how is a torn ACL as painful as it sounds? How on earth was he even able to get into the ring and work like he did with Benoit last Monday if this injury was in place?

I've never known anybody with an injury of this form, so I've no clue as to how serious it is.

Didn't a torn ACL end Martel's career after his brief comeback in WCW? I think it was a very severe one, though.

Guess-who-got-out-of-jobbing-at-Backlash!

It's Brilliant, really.

Shawn pins Benoit at Mania, HHH pulls a Summerslam 99 on him, necessitating a tournament culminating at Backlash, with HHH and Benoit as the finalists.

Usually any torn ACL is pretty severe. My cousin tore his ACL (regular) and he couldn't play football for 2 years! HBK's must be VERY minor or he'd be crying like a bizatch (as my cousin did).

Nasty.

Awesome sig, DFA, to be completly off topic.

Gratzi Gratzi....now return to On-TOPIC-ness......

I'm really at the point of not caring who comes out of the WM match, champion, but rather, excitment for the match as a WHOLE. As long as I see each superstar give it their all, then I'll be satisfied.

I believe Ken Shamrock suffered a torn ACL last year. He could not compete in MMA fights but could still do pro wrestling matches. You will eventualy have to go in for surgery. I would guess Michaels is working through it because once he goes in for surgery he will not be coming back to pro wrestling. He probably wants one last big Wrestlemania main event pay day and then retire.

Yeah I think Meltzer is talking about much it cost UPN to televise the show.

By the way Smackdown was 121st in ad rates, right? I was a little confused since the paragraph didn't say what the rankings were based on.

Hasn't Victoria been wrestling with a torn ligament in her knee for quite a while now, hence the big ass knee brace?

Usually the torn ligament hurts like hell but you can remain active on it for as long as you can take the pain as long as you have some sort of external support for the joint. A kid I coached while he was in high school tore his ACL but kept playing football for about 6 or 7 weeks until the season ended, whereupon he had his surgery. Still, props to HBK, but I wouldn't want my championship belt around the waist of HBK when he claims to be working through an injury if I was a booker <insert the well used "going to lose his smile" joke here>. I guess they figure Benoit can carry one gimp easily, so they threw in another one to make it more of a challenge.

My second post was this, obviously quoted from here/the observer:

PS: Hurry and pick your gimmick name before they run out, while they're relatively new.

Wasn't Shawn known for being pretty heavy on the pain killers? Him working as much as he does now and being injured is just asking for him to go back to his old ways. Nah....I'm sure God is helping him through this pain.

Gotta Give Shawn respect, this will be the 2nd time he worked a Mania program with a SEVERE injury.

Logic says, if he knew about it, Why didn't he elect to something with Rock? Since after the Surgry, he's done (the rehab will be a bitch)...You'd figure he'd want to get that program at some point.

Guess AS's dreams of a HBK/ANGLE match won't happen...it'll be interesting to see which of the two gives in first and retires.
