Viacom Sued Over Boobgate

by Sarah Hall

Just looking at Janet Jackson's nipple could be worth thousands of dollars--or so one man is hoping.

Still smarting from the image of Jackson's naked breast on his television screen during the Super Bowl halftime show, Utah attorney Eric Stephenson has filed a suit against Viacom in small claims court.

Viacom is the parent company of CBS and MTV, the networks that respectively broadcast and produced the halftime show.

Stephenson claims that Viacom used false advertising with regards to the content of the halftime show to lure him and other unsuspecting victims to watch.

"Various companies owned and controlled by Viacom deceptively advertised the content and quality of a family-oriented show known as the Super Bowl," Stephenson said in court documents. "Viacom advertised the show for general audiences, but instead it contained inappropriate, lewd, offensive, violent and degrading adult content."

Stephenson is seeking $5,000--the maximum amount allowed in small claims court.

A lawyer for Viacom was dismissive of the suit, saying it had no legal merit and would almost certainly be tossed out, should it ever make to court.

Stephenson isn't the first to seek damages in the wake of Boobgate.

Teri Carlin of Tennessee filed a suit "on behalf of all Americans who watched the Super Bowl," blaming Jackson and Justin Timberlake for causing her and millions of other unsuspecting viewers "to suffer outrage, anger, embarrassment and serious injury."

Carlin later dropped the suit, saying she had made her point.

After almost two months of maintaining a low profile, the wardrobe malfunctioner herself is about to return to the nation's television sets.

Jackson will appear as a guest on David Letterman's Late Show on March 29. The return to CBS will mark the singer's first interview since her breast-baring Super Bowl stunt.

Following her Letterman appearance, Jackson will continue making the rounds, appearing on ABC's Good Morning America, Fox's On the Air With Ryan Seacrest and as the host and musical guest of NBC's Saturday Night Live.

Her latest album, Damita Jo, is due out at the end of the month.

On a related "offensive material" note, ever notice that the same parents that tell their kids to never let words get them upset are the same ones that are furious when the kids curse?

Hmm, could this be a more obvious money grab? Of course, the guy does live in Utah, so he could be a Mor(m)on, and thus traumatized by the sight of a semi-naked breast. Either way, he's a tool who's just trying to sue his way to a paycheck.
