Brock was shoved down fans throats for months until he magically got over. But still, I'd be pretty upset at them if they took their ball and left.

Russo, dispite all his faults was the FIRST booker to seriously treat Benoit like a star and when he arrived to WCW, He took benoit out of that dead end REVOLUTION angle and put him on top, Gave him a push in the WCW 32 Man Tournament going over Melenko, Hall and Jarrett (we'll ignore the Medusa thing)... and was put in a big program against Jarrett, whom was easily the true #1 heel in the company with the US Title. He was put in a feud against the NWO Silver and Black team. Benoit was likely going to be BUILT as a legit contender under russo, I believe the plan was for him to go over Bret a couple months later but that's when Russo got shitcanned and Sullivan was promoted. Benoit knew what was going to happen, he smartly saw through the bullshit of them giving him the WCW Title . The only question I have is this...Why did he even go over? Why didn't he just WCW a nice little fuck you and botch the finish...I mean the title was going to Sid for him to job back to Nash anyways...so Benoit should have NOT given into WCW's request to be a dummy champion. I still wonder if Bret never got injuried, Would he have used his power play ability to Keep Benoit from getting demoted and humliated by Sullivan?
