NWATNA tell Styles to distance himself from ROH

Recommended Posts

From the PWInsider -

http://www.pwinsider.com/ViewArticle.asp?id=1342&p=1

AJ Styles, who currently holds the ROH Pure Wrestling championship, was approached last week by NWA: TNA officials and asked to "distance himself from ROH," according to several sources. Styles, who has praised Ring of Honor publicly and has stood with the promotion in the wake of the Rob Feinstein situation, reportedly turned down the request and was not happy with being asked to turn down future ROH bookings. Styles is scheduled for dates with ROH through the summer.

It is believed the request given to Styles will be given to other contracted TNA performers shortly. There are a number of workers who appear for both companies including Chris Sabin, The Amazing Red, Christopher Daniels, CM Punk, Raven, Jerry Lynn, and AJ Styles.

TNA does have a number of their performers under contract, primarily to prevent WWE talent raids (wording in NWA: TNA contracts specifically prevents performers from working for World Wrestling Entertainment) as they build the company. There was talk several months ago internally about asking talent not to work ROH, but it never went past the discussion stage as talent was never approached. Around that same time, TNA squashed a planned Raven vs. CM Punk hair vs. hair match that would have led to Punk shaving Raven's head in ROH. TNA instead decided to use the angle for themselves, leading to Shane Douglas being the one who got to shave Raven's hair.

Yeah....except they're NOT a number 2 promotion. They don't come close to paying their guys enough to be exclusive, and oh yes, NOBODY WATCHES THEM. This has gotta be the most idiotic thing ever. RoH just smoked TNA's paid attendance record at 3/13, and TNA is getting worried. A few months ago, MKJ told me he was worried TNA would do this with AJ and Punk if RoH grew...looks like he was right. Good thing AJ refused.

I really don't see the problem with A.J. working both, unless TNA is set to expand...or just because their biggest star works for a promotion owned by a child rapist.

Yes, I re-wrote my post in Misc. Folder because its the same thing.

TNA can't be a commercially successful company if they are sharing their stars with a kiddie porn led company.

Anyone know who pays Styles more?

He's one of the three highest paid guys in TNA along with Raven & Jeff Jarrett. Of course JArrett practically runs the company so its expected.

Re: saying RoH is run by a pedo

It WAS. It IS NOT now. As soon as RoH makes it clear Rob's not with them, I doubt anybody will care about Rob. Gary Glitter was a pedo, and that doesn't stop people from liking the song "Rock N' Roll," does it?

Funny, I thought the key to being a succesful company was making money and having people actually watch your shows.

Unfortunately, an owner of a company affects popular opinion moreso than someone who sings a song. I personally don't care much for Gary Glitter, nor would I purchase an album of his.

And ROH has seemingly been blowing smoke out of their ass with getting RF outta owenrship and such. He's still around.

Either way, I'd say the ROH name is damaged because of what has happened. And since there is evidence that these people may have known about his extra-curcicular - I'm kinda down on the entire company as a whole. I certainly won't support them in any way.

Well, they did sign exclusive contracts to TNA which means they are bound to TNA and are only able to work for ROH with TNA's blessing. It doesn't sound like anything will be made of it now, but if the FSN TV deal does go down, I expect the order will go down (and again it's within the company's rights since the talent signed contracts.) Maybe TNA would give them all pay raises as a result of the TV deal...

No. The contracts only give TNA precedence over other dates, and ban the workers from working WWE. TNA has no call in where the guys work. If an ROH show and a TNA show were on the same day, the guys would have to work TNA, but that's about it.

ROH can draw all they want. They'll never be a number 2 promotion. They are an indy company, and always will be...end of story.

TNA on the other hand can be a number 2 company, and has the options to be. I'm sure if TNA toured and had a consistent roster they'd smoke the ROH attendances. However, TNA looks to be set up to fail.... Then again I remember watching back in 1991 and thinking WCW would never be close to WWE, and we know what happened.

Is ROH an equal TNA...close...but TNA has a slight advantage in their marketing department. Just my opinion and I probably won't read the thread again so please spare the flaming, because in the end I do like both companies. And I would like both to succeed.

Hmm, they tour. They draw in multiple markets. They turn a profit.

They are more of a #2 than TNA.

Based on what? A total inability to draw in Nashville or generate anything resembling a decent PPV buyrate?

However, TNA looks to be set up to fail.... Then again I remember watching back in 1991 and thinking WCW would never be close to WWE, and we know what happened.

Yeah, sucked for several years monetarily, got hot for 2 years, sucked for the last few years.

WOO HOO!

Yet your tone contradicts this assertion.

Ever think they ASKED him to distance himself because Rob hasn't left yet and they don't want their top young star to get dragged down?

It's a smart business decision and if AJ was smart, he'd realize that yes he should do it until ROH gets the RF situation locked away.

TNA is trying to get a tv deal and the last thing they want is the ONLY NWA-TNA younger wrestler they listed to be associated with ROH if they don't get RF out of power in time.

TNA is not a villian in this, they are being logical about it. It doesn't take much for tv networks to turn down wrestling anymore and even the slightest smudge could hurt.

If RF didn't get in trouble or if ROH had settled the situation quickly then I doubt they would have asked him.

I like ROH and I like TNA and TNA is right in this case. They made a business decision.

They started doing this with stars before the Feinstein thing according to Mike Johnson. The Feinstein thing is just a smokescreen, they had definitely hinted it to stars of both promotions in the past. The idea that their big worry is over Feinstein is hilarious. And RF is officially gone by all accounts. All of his stock in the company now belongs to someone else.

Edit: I'm not getting into this again.

TNA needs to worry about expanding. That's all. Just forget about RoH.
