One and Only console/developer/game hatred thread

Recommended Posts

Since I'm sure we all have some games, etc we'd like to vent on, I'm interested in hearing which ones you peeps hate.

Saw this on another board--Renegade might get a kick out of this one:

EA

"we are pleased to announce, that we, in conjunction with other companies in secret, we are pleased to finally unveil that we have turned your beloved game industry into a Hollywood type knock off scheme to make hords of money for ourselves by means of shoddy marketing and brand name game, popculture and movie ports, exposing the gaming industry into eternal mediocrity, and making publishers scared to make anything revolutionary as well as kill gaming forever. "

I second the E.A. vote. After they ruined the Bond series by focusing more on flash than gameplay, I was appalled to read in EGM that E.A. will publish Timesplitters 3. Timesplitters 2's team was made up of most of the people that were responsible for the smash hits Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. I have no idea if those same programmers will be involved in any way.

E.A. may have very well ruined another great FPS.

I wouldn't say that I hate any particular console/developer/game, but there are things that I dislike.

Halo and GoldenEye- I've had people tell me "even if you don't like First-Person Shooters, you'll like Halo/GoldenEye." I didn't like either game. FPS seem to be a really popular genre, but I just can't get into them.

All RPGs- RPGs are the only genre that I actually hate. I can't get into them at all. If I'm playing a game, I don't want to watch a ton of cut-scenes and read a bunch of text. I hate the turn-based combat system used in most RPGs. Why the hell should I stand there like a moron while my opponent attacks me? Squaresoft seems to be the worst, if only for their annoying commercials.

"Hate" is too strong a word when discussing games you don't like (unless you're on the GameFAQs boards, it seems).

But I do have a beef with 989 Studios/Sports: It seems like every game they have put out since 1999 has been a mediocre pile. They took the Twisted Metal series and almost tanked it, a lot of their original titles (Syphon Filter, to name one) are just blah, and their sports games (ESPECIALLY the Gameday series) are the same every year: blah graphics and crappy gameplay. It seems like they're getting their act together with the MLB series (it's getting good reviews), but maybe they should take a year off on the basketball and football so they can learn what goes into a good game.

TimeSplitters 3 will definitely be developed by Free Radical, the same group who developed the first two. EA is just publishing it.

You don't know the difference between "publisher" and "developer", do you?

EA is just distributing the game under their banner. As Prez stated, Free Radical is actually MAKING the game.

But as I stated, I wasn't sure if that meant Free Radical would be making the game, or if they split, or if E.A. just bought the rights and gave the job to someone else.

The only game that I've found "even if you don't like FPSers, you'll like this" has been true with has been Metroid Prime. Although that's not really a true FPS, because it is more like Jumping Flash would be--a First Person Adventure. I like both those games a lot, but Doom clones hold no interest to me.

Plus, I hate navigating with two control sticks.

There are other RPGs besides turn-based cinema-fests, and generally I like the old-school stuff if it does a lot of things well. Although I certain see your beef with it.

"Hate" is too strong a word when discussing games you don't like (unless you're on the GameFAQs boards, it seems).

No, it isn't. Don't insult me by comparing me to the stereotypical GameFAQ idiot. When game companies so transparently make half-assed efforts, insult gamers' intelligence, and make games that are pure torture to play, they deserve hate.

But I do have a beef with 989 Studios/Sports

About Twisted Metal: after Twisted Metal 2, the games weren't made by the original team, actually.

When I hate a game, it's hardly ever because of the game itself, it's almost always because the game is thrown in my face for months and months, either by friends or by the press.

Examples:

GTA3/GTA:VC: They're not that bad of games, although I thought the gameplay was greatly overrated, but my God, after hearing about how they're the greatest thing ever for years by the press and a bunch of my casual gamer friends, I wanted to throw a hammer at the TV screen every time I saw a commercial for them. Soo overexposed, argh.

Goldeneye: Same deal here, except even more so, since people would want to play the damn thing like five years later. I was tired of it by 1997, and people were playing it at parties and taking a TV that could be used for anything else in like 2001. And by then, everyone had memorized everything, so I'm like wandering around aimlessly and getting killed before I can see anyone. Blech. Hate it. FPS games in general are no fun if you're bad at them, and Goldeneye is like below average for an FPS game.

Super Smash Brothers: Ugh, just stupid substanceless Nintendo fanboy stupidity. I don't mind SSBM so much since it's actually a decent game, but SSB was shallow and terrible and boring, and we played it for *years*, when TK3 and SC were available. Argh.

Mario Kart 64: It wasn't even as good as the original! Heh, I'm starting to think there's a trend here with N64 games. Like, the four player gimmick made people think the games were good party games no matter how bad they were. MK64 had long and boring courses and a lame, unbalanced battle mode with boring stages. After one day, I wanted to go back to SNES Mario Kart and never play MK64 again, and yet, again, it got played for years. Blech.

Bomberman 64, Starfox 64, Anything 64... Heh.

Dead or Alive: It sucks, it's always sucked, the reversal system kills any chance of decent gameplay, and yet it's "OMG THE BEST FIGHTER EVER!" because it has pretty graphics. And games that use T&A as their major selling point also annoy me.

I don't think I could agree more. The gameplay is always what kills it for me. There's only so much of randomly hitting people with bats and other objects that I can take. The storylines are good (moreso in Vice City than in GTA3) but after recently repurchasing them on Xbox (after having both on PS2 before I sold them and the PS2 last year) I remembered why I didn't mind parting with them in the first place. Now I'm looking for a good place and good game to trade them in for....Ninja Gaiden (I have it rented for the weekend) is getting up there in consideration for that game. Hooo lordy....

No kidding. :P *shudders at Yoshi's Story*

Bomberman 64, Starfox 64, Anything 64... Heh.

Eh, I liked Starfox 64, Kirby 64, and...well...Mega Man 64 was good--WHEN IT WAS MEGA MAN LEGENDS ON PS1 A YEAR OR SO BEFORE THAT!

(Yes, I know some people hate the Legends games, but the heck with them.)

Super Smash Brothers: Ugh, just stupid substanceless Nintendo fanboy stupidity. I don't mind SSBM so much since it's actually a decent game, but SSB was shallow and terrible and boring, and we played it for *years*, when TK3 and SC were available. Argh.

I didn't like SSB--Melee's actually a good game and not just an overrated mess, you say?

SQUARE--sorry, knee-jerk reflex.

Although the print ads for Xenosaga make me want to do some crotch-kicking with steel-toed boots.

I have a general dislike for most anythign from Acclaim, EA, Rockstar, and 989 studios.

I really really dislike Microsoft for killing Civilization. But, on the other hand, since Alpha Centauri was soooooooo good (Civ + Plot) that they can be forgiven.

Its weird, but I'm really sick of SquareEnix. FFTA, sucked. DrakenGard? heard it sucked. FFX was fine and FFX-2 looks ok, but everything else since Einhander square's made I've HATED. Unless FFT came out after Einhander.

I hate EA for only going online with the PS2. I like to turn my PS2 on as little as possible.

I hate that Nintendo won't do online...and also how long it takes between GC games that I want.

I hate that every game I want on XBox gets pushed back at least 3 times. Ninja Gaiden...delayed forever then finally came out. Everything else is either delayed forever...or isn't even expected to come out for a long time. I wish they wouldn't announce games until they were 3 months away from shipping.

I agree completely.

I guess I can narrow it down to my shockingly short attention span as to why I can *never* get into any RPG. Actually, the only game that was RPG-based that could hold my attention for longer then 30 seconds was Shining Force, back on the Sega Megadrive.

That's why my gaming library is full of fighting games, they're straight to the fucking point and let you get it all out right away.

It seems like a really well made game that Nintendo obviously put a lot of time into, and it definitely has a lot more depth than the first one. Still not my style, but definitely a quality game.

Edit: New Year's resolution: Spell definitely right.

Whatever happened to that rumor that EA might be considering signing up with Xbox Live in the future?

(salivates at the prospect of playing Madden online...)

I can't really think of anything that's got me upset now. Generally if I don't think I'll like something I just don't play it so I never have much to complain about. I guess Acclaim is pretty lame, with their sea of licenced games.

I hate how games push new or annoying characters that no one cares about. Like most of the SSX characters are really annoying and no one cares about those third string characters that are in with say a Crash Bandicoot or Sonic game.

I think the part that makes some people claim that GTA games are the best is actually what makes them unbearable: maybe there's a really good reason why there aren't so many games where you just can run as far as your heart desires before hitting the map's edge. It takes so long just to get to any destination in those games. Having a whole city to explore is essentially what makes it BORING.

Actually, the map on the GTA games really isn't that big.

There are games with some really huge areas to explore, like Morrowind..which is just insane.

Cool.

Incidentally, how's the GBA Mario Kart? I have the Konami knockoff Krazy Racers. :D

Well, it sounds good on paper: mix together VF/Tekken-style gameplay, use a fairly simple control layout and a "deep" reversal system, add boobies, and INSTANT HIT!~

However, it's a bastard child, kind of like those morons who ripped off Casablanca, cast Pamela Anderson, turned it into an action movie with boobs and explosions, and voila--Barb Wire. Although DoA is a far less serious crime, of course.

Well, I guess almost by default it's the best exclusive 3D fighter on the console.

What the fuck are you talking about? MS killing Civ? Civ III was made by Infogrames(Atari).

I hate Acclaim. BMX XXX solidified my hatred for them and that hatred can never be undone.

SNK/Playmore. I don't hate them, but dammit, I'd wish they would update their sprites. It's embarrassing.
