Guest Astro Report post Posted March 26, 2004 I was playing the Video game (which I bought for 2 bucks on Monday) and There are obvious likenesses of Dr. Death, Stan Hansen and many more japan stars, right down to stats and finishers. So how did WCW get away with this, by simply making just enough changes or what? Plus with a roster of 50-80 guys of their own, why did they only add 15 of their own guys? Seems completely retarded to me. *Sigh*
The Amazing Rando 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2004 Probably cause they wanted to make it "THE WORLD" ...and Japan just happens to be a part of that world.

Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes Report post Posted March 26, 2004 I think this falls under the FirePro Wrestling series. As long as the likeness is not 100% accurate and the character is given a fictional name, all is legal. Although I'll say Hayabusa looks almost exactly like his normal self. dubq 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2004 The deal with New Japan probably had something to do with them not getting sued. Well considering neither Hansen or Williams worked for NJPW at the time, I doubt it has anything to do with that.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2004 I think this falls under the FirePro Wrestling series. As long as the likeness is not 100% accurate and the character is given a fictional name, all is legal. Although I'll say Hayabusa looks almost exactly like his normal self. That's basically it. Japan has different copyright and intellectual property laws as the United States. So sometimes they'll make little changes and make sure the names are different, and they're fine. Plus vs. the World's graphics are so ugly it would be difficult to definitively say which wrestlers are who. Sabu's in as well, and Ken Shamrock, Hawk, and Taka were in the WWF at around that time as well. Although I'll say Hayabusa looks almost exactly like his normal self. I think he's less accurate than his VPW64 version, though. Shinzaki is missing the Heavenly Lock and the rope-walk in World Tour, as well, I believe. There are some weird things going on there. Some moves are swapped around, such as the guy that looks like Dynamite Kid using Vader's move set, the Terry Funk knockoff being bald, and so forth. Also, "The Giant" is actually Andre. Unless there was a point in WCW where Wight ballooned to a greater size than he currently is in WWE and grew an afro. Maybe I missed that. Plus with a roster of 50-80 guys of their own, why did they only add 15 of their own guys? Seems completely retarded to me. *Sigh* It was made by a Japanese company, and was probably little more than a translated version of the Japanese game, so they weren't very familiar with a lot of the less-famous WCW guys. Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted March 26, 2004 Yeah, you could definitely tell it was a Japanese game. THe triangle, square, circle bit. All of the Japanese names and federations. Than you had Chris Benoit's picture on the back BEFORE Hulk Hogan's or any of the other normal main eventer's pic. Man, I loooved that. Besides Hogan the main people the game advertised were Benoit, Eddie, Malenko and I think maybe the Steiners. Even the poster in EGM strongly featured Benoit (180 top rope spinning powerbomb!), Eddie and Malenko along with some of the other normal main eventers. I always wondered if there were a few people around this game that were confused why Benoit and co were featured so strongly. I liked the fighting system in this but one other thing I really like were the secret charactors. Here are some of them: Grizz Lee as Bruiser Brody Shanghai as Karl Gotch Major Tom as Terry Funk El Masquerade as Mil Mascaras Jeff Jarrett as Jeff Jarrett Than you had Tiger Mask and Andre the Giant as super secret special charactors. What a list! That was half the fun of the game with the other half was marking out whenever you figured out who one of the disguised charactors was by reading their mannerisms and moves in the ring. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2004 Strangely enough, the "fake" characters looked far more like their real counterparts than in VPW2. In VPW2, did they make the "fake" wrestlers look less like their real counterparts due to changes in Japanese laws, or so they could squeeze more replay out of the game by making you unlock the real costumes? Big Bang Pro Wrestling seems to just have fun with odd character designs, and tack on movesets from U.S. guys. A big fat bald guy as a Nash-clone, for instance. Plus Kei has to have the largest breasts I've ever seen on a female game character. Geez, Mai would point and laugh at her.

DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2004 I remember back in 97, people were convinced Crome Dome or Thunder Dome (the bald guy) was supposed to be Steve Austin. Crazy kids. I liked being Black Belt (TAKA) in World Tour, considering he was a WWF regular at that point.

Pegasus Kid 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2004 *snip* Wow, I think I'd better dust off my N64 and play this game again because I sure as hell don't remember any of these secret characters. I guess I was too busy playing against my buddies to actually play in single player mode. Man, back in the day WCW vs NWO would provide hours, even full days worth of enjoyment. I can't believe more games didn't incorporate the Round Robin mode. That along was enough to keep six - eight of us busy for the day.

Most of the vs. the World peeps were in VPW 64, but the unlockables in World Tour were only WCW guys, Joe Bruiser, and Black Widow. Sadly, VPW 2's roster can't touch VPW 64 or WCW vs. the World's. MillenniumMan831 0 Report post Posted April 5, 2004 Did anyone notice the WCW Pro logo as one of the WCW mats? Kinda funny since Sonny Onoo's Japanese contingent took over 30min of Pro per week in preparation for Starrcade 1995. Probably a coincidence though.
