Just John Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 This is just an "I'm bored" topic. What are the funniest examples of WWE trying to avoid certain terms or describe certain events in favor of more family friendly versions? EX: Hospital = Medical Facility, Violence = Physicality (I know this one isn't from WWE, but someone will probably mention it anyway): Tank Abbott holding a knife to Big Al's throat and Tony Schiavone saying that Tank "was going to cut Al's beard." Post away.
Guest Choken One Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 "Sport Entertainment" as a substitute for "Shitty soap opera acting with bad action".
Guest Fook Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Anything that they use as a euphemism for a sexual body part is just horrid. Puppies, strudel, pie, etc.
AndrewTS Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 "explosions" = gunshots during the Pillman/Austin gun angle. "physical intensity" is actually the USA network sanctioned term for "violence." They do you "physicality" now and then, though. WWF couldn't say "violence" on USA. How stupid, especially seeing what they DID allow during the Russo days. Although I guess JR is so far into the habit he'll never say "violence" anymore. "Personal demons" is an classic as well.
Guest Anglesault Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 I heard Meltz mention once on the LAW that "hospital" is used for real injuries
Guest Askewniverse Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Not from WWF/E, but I'll mention it anyway. "International object" instead of foreign object.
Prophet of Mike Zagurski Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 symbol for the Undertaker's cross
Guest Askewniverse Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 "bowling shoe ugly" or "methodical" = this match sucks. "educated feet" = this guy uses a lot of kicks.
AndrewTS Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 "Resilient" = "this guy will soon be no-selling the entire match" "got a lot of heart" = "this little guy is being pushed because he knows who to blow."
MarvinisaLunatic Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 "bowling shoe ugly" or "methodical" = this match sucks. "educated feet" = this guy uses a lot of kicks. how are those terms family friendly related?
Guest Askewniverse Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 "bowling shoe ugly" or "methodical" = this match sucks. "educated feet" = this guy uses a lot of kicks. how are those terms family friendly related? It isn't too friendly to say "this match sucks" on TV. You got me on the educated feet one, though.
Just John Posted March 29, 2004 Author Report Posted March 29, 2004 Here's another from the "Who ran over Steve Austin" angle: JR would never say "murder," but "vehicular homocide." He also never said the person who was responsible was out to "kill" Steve, but rather "to end his career and livelyhood."
Guest Choken One Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 JR would never say "murder," but "vehicular homocide." because that's the ACTUAL term for what occured...actually...ATTEMPTED Vehicular Homicide.
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 The Pillman/Austin gun angle was, to my knowledge, the only time that WWE has ever mentioned/used a gun on their programming, and hopefully the last, although that feud came with a pretty awesome segment or two.
haVoc Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 There was that gun Austin used which shot out a net to catch Kevin Nash. Remember Nash screaming like a women "He has a gun!"
Guest ToddRoyal Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Don't forget "Bang: 316" That was a pretty risque angle for the WWF at the time with Austin holding a gun to Vince's head. Not that Vince's fake pee helped the situation.
2GOLD Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 "got a lot of heart" = "this little guy is being pushed because he knows who to blow." JR says that a lot about Spike Dudley though. Also "More guts than brains"= he's our midget punching bag
clean rob Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 "...has a very impressive physique" = ...is clearly taking steroids. "The audience here are showing their displeasure at this turn of events" = The crowd are fed up with shit like this. "A very talented and beautiful athlete" = Her wrestling isn't much, but hey, she has big tits right?
