John Cena Speaks On Brock, His CD, Hip-Hop, More

Full recap of Cena on Between the Ropes...

Credit: Richard Trionfo

Between the Ropes interviewed the United States Champion and Doctor of Thuganomics, John Cena, to discuss his new DVD release ‘Word Life’, his upcoming CD, and other matters related to the WWE.

The interview began with talk of the DVD, and was asked if he was surprised that it was released so early in his career. John was surprised but he feels that it is very cool. He talked about the pressure, but says that he does not feel it because he is just being himself. He said that he is trying more with the crowd, and they are embracing him more. He feels that the company does not have a great understanding of the hip hop culture so nobody is telling him what to do. His on screen persona is what he is behind the scenes.

Talk moved on to what the WWE can do for the hip hop market. He feels that by allowing him to wear the throwback jerseys, the Reebok Pumps, or the steel chains it is building a bridge to the hip hop community. John talked about his recent cover shoot with Method Man.

John was asked about his CD and whether he is seeking advice from rappers. He wants the people to know that what they listen to is him, and what he loves about rap. He wants the rappers to know that he is a bigger fan of theirs than they might be a fan of his. He said that it will be tough to get the concept of a rap album from a wrestler over with the crowd, and hopes that other ventures into the genre by wrestlers will not be what they are comparing him to. The album is scheduled to be released June 8th.

John was asked about the availability of Reebok Pumps, but would not divulge his source because the product is out of production. He wanted to bring it out as part of his character because of the throwback persona.

He was asked about being on Wrestlemania and being the opening match. He enjoyed being in the opening match because he provides something different for the crowd. He feels that it provided the right flow for Wrestlemania. He tries to interact with the crowd as well as his opponent. John was asked about being in front of the crowd at Madison Square Garden, and he felt that it was the most moving experience.

John was asked about his knee, and he said that it is now at 100%. It was a partial tear of his MCL, and he is as good as he ever has been. John is also coming off a wrist injury. John said that the doctors do not understand that an injured wrestler cannot take time off because they wrestle four times a week.

John said that his main objective is to show people that whether you like him or not, that if you like hip hop, you will like wrestling because it is OK.

John was asked about the recent events in the company including the departure of Brock Lesnar. John did not think that Brock was unhappy, and he was surprised that Brock wanted to leave because Brock was the ‘franchise’. He said that he received about ‘a day’s notice’ of him leaving. John said that Brock was responsible for making his character what it is today. He said that you have to respect the decision that he made. John said that he hopes that Brock will come back, and he wishes Brock the best in whatever he does.

Between the Ropes airs every Wednesday from 10:00 p.m. to Midnight Eastern on 740 the Team in Orlando, Florida. The show can also be heard live on the internet at www.betweentheropes.com.

Hmmm... Do you think that he can make a real rap CD? I mean, not raps like what we see on SmackDown! ? I'll say yes. And another question is... Will he be the next Eminem, minus the mother-bashing, coarse language, ties with Dr. Dre and everything else that Eminem is known for? I'll say... I hope not. But if he did, what a challenge it would've been.

John said that his main objective is to show people that whether you like him or not, that if you like hip hop, you will like wrestling because it is OK.

What?

Shoes.

Method Man.

CD's.

Brock.

DVD's.

Funny how almost every interview with Cena stays away from questions regarding his wrestling abilities.

How many WWE interviews ask about in ring style?

By the way, his in ring skills at this point are fine, he's lost the blandness and hasn't had a match that outright sucked since the match with Brock at Backlash. Of course it's tough to see that when all he gets to do is wrestle squash matches for five minutes.

That shows that charisma is important - his charisma was less-honed than his wrestling abilities at Backlash.

That match couldn't suck now.

Ever wonder if there's a reason for his five minute squashes?

He showed some promise in his match against Benoit back in December but I'll be damned if his match against Dupree isn't going to expose him badly.

I love this...He doesn't say ANYTHING about his workrate and the dicussion was about his album and other stuff...yet you instantly attack him and his workrate...for no fucking reason.

Why didn't he talk about it? BECAUSE HE WASN'T ASKED about it!

I wouldn't call them squashes - I'd say five minutes where he's got the upper-hand to start, loses for four minutes or so, and then battles back towards the end, does some of his trademark moves and finishes off his opponent/s with the F-U.

I'm thinking the squash matches are there because the talent depth doesn't allow him to do any match of real meaning, they have to save those for the Pay Per Views. He has a group of spots that pop the crowd and a solid moveset, he has the crowd eating out of his hand from the minute he walks out of the curtain.

With Eddie's reign leading SD! to all time ratings lows, one wonders how long it will be till the WWE rolls the dice with Cena as Champ.

Back to the topic though, if he makes the songs on his CD anything like "Basic Thugonamics", he should be fine. The song is pretty decent, has a nice flow, and pretty cool music.

Television tapings and house show attendance are up - ratings mean NOTHING at this point in time (without competition, of course).

Yes, that's a great song, and it will be interesting to see what can and will actually do.

:D

That's not what I've heard - I've heard that he can rhyme (...), but that's about it for his gimmick. He's a clean-cut, no drugs/alcohol kind of guy (not trying to imply that that is involved in his gimmick). Even though the interview cited that, it's not as if he's going to say any different.

I'd like for him to catch someone like Undertaker or Angle (Or Lesnar if he was still on the show) in a REALLY nasty mood and then start talking to him in Idiot (Cena's mangled English) and watch them beat the shit out of him.

Hey, he was cool as fuck with me even when he was a heel at the time. Besides, he told me that you see on TV, that's how he really is in real life.

*met John Cena afterwards following the El Paso SD show last year

They'd be fired for inverted racism.

Only during sweeps, and I'd expect them to pull out all the stops in May for that reason.

And I'd say any ratings drops would have more to do with the supporting cast than with Eddy since it isn't Eddy who's making the shows suck lately.

AS continues to try and cope with the fact that Cena is the future.

Correction - the rest of the show is leading SD to all time ratings lows. Eddy's title reign is just along for the ride. WWE officials need to look at the rest of the show before they panic & take the belt off Eddy. Putting it on Cena without changing anything else isn't going to improve anything.

It's god damn scary!

I look to the future and I see people like Cena and rednecks driving cars around a circle.

It's beyond depressing.

Cena's character would be funnier if he was a blatant rip-off of black stereotypes but had no idea that he was being offensive. Like, if he dropped the n-word after every sentence during a conversation. Then he could feud with Farooq.

/end WWE Creative Team mode

That could be alright, but also, that would incur a lot of negative feedback for WWE.

Nope, he said quote

How you see me on TV is how I really am in real life.

when I talked about the rapper gimmick and reminisced about Prototype. He got a kick out of it and said he missed being Prototype.

Unfortunately, Vince's already distaste for Cruiserweights would have hit an all-time low, especially for Ultimo Dragon, when he slipped (twice) at WrestleMania XX.
