WWF July-August 1999

Recommended Posts

I remember hearing that originally, Steve Austin was supposed to feud with Jeff Jarrett (hence the stunner he gives him at Fully Loaded), but obviously Austin didn't want to work with him because he "didn't run the ropes hard enough". My question is was the original plan for Summerslam Austin vs. Jarrett? Or maybe a four corners with Austin, Jarrett, HHH, and Mankind? It seems like they really wanted to get the title on HHH then...or were they really going to give it to Jarrett? What was the original plan?

Also, was the Edge/Gangrel feud ever blown off? And what lead to Edge getting an IC title shot against Jarrett at Fully Loaded?

It was actually Jarrett getting a shot at Edge for the title. Edge won the belt at a Toronto house show the night (or 2 nights, dunno) before.

I heard the original plan was Austin/HHH for the title at Summerslam, with HHH winning, but Austin thought HHH wasn't over enough to main event (and he may have been right...look at the No Mercy 99 buyrate) so they stuck Foley in there.

I heard that too...the weird thing is that it really seemed like they were going towards a Jarrett/Austin feud, too. Maybe that was a post-Summerslam feud idea or something.

Shamrock couldn't make it to the Toronto house show due to travel hassles so they stuck Edge in there at the last minute and gave him the belt to please his hometown fans. :)

But what had Edge done to get an IC title shot at Fully Loaded in the first place? Was there any issue with Jarrett?

Geez, I forgot how much of a prick Austin was in 99. At least the WWE was searching for new challengers in Jarrett and HHH...I mean nobody wanted to see Austin vs. Taker ppv main event part 217 (old Kevin Nash joke from Nitro)

I hated him from 97 until his brilliant heel run in 2001...now no matter how dull his role is, I can look back at 2001 and remember why Austin is one of my all time faves (I hated him in 97 cause I was a mark and he was against my Hart Foundation and was ruining wrestling with his vulgar ways :P ...then came 98 with pimps and porn stars...Austin didn't seem so bad then)

Edge was feuding with Gangrel at the time so I doubt it.

There was a brief skirmish between Edge and Jarrett...

Ah, yes. Jarrett cheated to defeat Christian to retain the title in one RAW episode. I believe a tag match between Gangrel/Jarrett Vs. The Brood occured shortly after. Edge got the pin.

Jarrett was set to defend the title against Edge at FL til he won it at the house show. STU-PID.

I don't recall Austin/Jarrett ever being planned for a big main event. Jarrett didn't even appear on the June PPV (KOTR) and was just coming off a program against Val Venis and Nicole Bass. The gears were turning for a HHH main event slot since WM 15.

I heard different about the SummerSlam 99 Main Event. Several issues kept the title off HHH til the next night. Austin/HHH wasn't possible because it would be too much on Austins nagging injuries, Austin didn't think HHH was ready enough yet, and Ventura or someone thought Ventura presenting the title to heel was a bad idea (maybe Ventura), so Foley got the title and lost it the next night.

Austin didn't have a problem with jobbing to HHH at Judgment Day that year remember, so it wasn't a I dont want him to be pushed yet thing.

Foley has said that the Ventura scenario is the one the happened. I see no reason to doubt him and it seems the most logical, considering Austin did agree to job to HHH at No Mercy.

No, I don't think there was one.
