Ecw Update,Eugene Storyline causing trouble

Tickets for the May Judgment Day PPV went on sale today. I am not expecting that show to do gangbusters as the Smackdown brand has really taken a hit, both in the ratings and at the houses, since WrestleMania. I really think WWE’s positioning it as a B show could become a serious problem for the brand if it’s not addressed soon.

 

Jay Landry sent this, which is very interesting. … According to USPTO, the activity to trademark ECW and Extreme Championship Wrestling were suspended in January 2004. So, there is no active work on those trademarks. So, that means nothing is going to happen with ECW. However, the WWE has been actively working on finishing the trademarks to all the WCW trademarks through April, with the exception of WCW Saturday Nitro, which is now dead and abandoned. The owner of the WCW trademarks is WCW, Inc in Stamford, CT.

 

Lee Relph sent this report. … It looks like Eugene is already causing headaches for the WWE in more ways than one. Two scenes revolving around him on RAW were edited this week in the UK. First, when Eric Bischoff gave William Regal the job of managing Eugene, the word "simple" was blanked out from the phrase "simple task". Later, when Regal went to have words with Bischoff, they showed him knock on Eric's door then we quickly cut a very brief generic RAW promo. We came back with Bischoff telling Regal that if he wants to stay on RAW, he has to manage Eugene. So, Regal's description of Eugene as a "windowlicker" was never aired in his home country. Now, the UK TV Programme Code as set out by the UK's regulatory body Ofcom states the following on the portrayal of people with disabilities:

 

"There is a danger of offence in the use of humour based on physical, mental or sensory disability, even where no malice is present. Reference to disability should be included only where necessary to the context and patronising expressions replaced by neutral terms. It should be possible for people with disabilities to be included in programmes of all kinds."

 

One can only assume that SKY/WWE have read this clause and decided that this applied to Eugene. Just to explain, RAW airs after the 9.00pm watershed - which means that pretty much most things of an adult content can air on TV uncut. RAW also has a warning that precedes it stating explicitly that it is not suitable for younger viewers and may cause offence. Worse references to disabled people have aired on other shows in this country before. This wouldn't be the first time that stuff have been cut from WWE shows that can be seen on other shows on UK TV. So, I expect that certain references to Eugene will be cut from all future episodes of RAW in the UK.

- I can't see Judgment Day being a sell-out either, unless the ticket prices go down (which it's too late for), which WWE would gain nothing from anyway.

 

And now that SmackDown! actually is the worse show, I don't like the look of things for it.

 

- Yeah, we haven't heard many WCW and/or ECW rumours lately, which was surprising with the complete shuffle of the weekend programming. Maybe it was just rumours, even if everything seemed like it would've fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, and we will be getting a new Classics show.

 

- I knew it, as did everybody else - as well as screwing Nick Dinsmore royally, WWE have also screwed themselves.

 

It should be interesting to see what they'll do with Nick now.

 

I will say this: Do these sorts of things happen when an actor portrays a mentally-challenged in a film?

 

Oh, and William Regal referring to Eugene as a "window licker" was funny. Admit it, it was.

You already know what'll happen if WWE drops the angle, he'll head back down to OVW and he'll stay there until WWE can release him from his contract. And WWE will just pretend that Eugene never existed and this angle never happened.

The only thing that would make the Eugene gimmick okay (for me anyway) is this:

WWE can still portray Eugene as a retard outside the ring, but once he gets in the ring he's like a wrestling machine, then when he leaves the ring he can go back to being a retard again. That's the only thing I could think of that can be done with Regal/Eugene, that way you'll have your "humorous" skits between the two and the end payoff is that Regal has taken Eugene and turned him into a proper wrestler.

That's more and more what I'm thinking will happen - a classic underestimation story. Regal underestimates Eugene, Eugene surprises him, and grows on Regal, who still helps him along the way.

Regal called Dinsmore a "window-licker"!? That's... well, it's not funny, but coming from Regal it would be. If you get me. I hate his portrayal of all Englishmen as upperclass twats, but the voice he uses for it is brilliant for such phrases.

William Regal's portrayal of that is a great gimmick.

Regal/Storm have already been a deadly combination of heatless and boring that killed all interest in the Tag Division once, i'd rather not see them get a chance to do it again. (not that Raw even has a Tag division anymore anyway)

In my personal opinion, I do NOT think Lance Storm is worthless.

 

I've watched Lance's runs in ECW and WCW, and I have to say I liked what I saw.

 

It's just they've pretty much castrated any chance of him getting somewhat over in WWE that's the problem.

By my count, Lance Storm has had one entertaining match in his career, and that would be the WCW Title match with Booker T on Nitro. Couple that in with the fact he works so light so as to expose the business vindicates me in saying that he is absolutely worthless.

 

In fact, I'd rather have my eye gouged out with a rusty hook than watch a Lance Storm match.

It doesn't take much for me to like a match. I don't really look at a match for psychology, I look at it to be ENTERTAINED.
