Ya I posted something similar he said last month although I think he might have said he'd go as high as 130 pitches. Mark Buehrle so needs to ask for a trade while he's still young enough to have a decent career.

Pitching has changed. Teams use a 5 man rotation. Starters only go 6 innings. The bullpen is used more with long relievers, set up, left-handed specialist, and closers. Guillen is just foolish if he thinks this benefit the team in the long run. Pitchers today aren't developed to throw 120 pitches every night, and throw CG's. Look at A.J. Burnette. He was a workhorse in 2002. He's only know supposed to return in May.

This is another reason I wouldn't go near Beurhle (sp?) in our Roto draft. Heck, his arm's probably already been abused, looking at the number of innings he's logged at his young age. Now Ozzie Guillen is just going to pile on. The poor kid's arm is going to fall off either this year or next.

That's why the groin injury last year might end up helping Oswalt in the long run. He was piling on the innings in 2002, and a groin injury isn't something that is likely to be recurring.

If they used to have 4-man rotations, and now they have 5-man rotations, doesn't that help Ozzie Guillen's point? Today's pitchers get more rest, so shouldn't they be able to throw more pitches when they do play? Also, the general consensus in that today's pro athlete is bigger-faster-stronger than in the past, so shouldn't they be able to handle higher pitch counts?

today's pro athlete is so bigger/faster/stronger that they can tear tendons and pull muscles in a stiff breeze. They are jacked up to the point where guys get hurt jogging.

Some think baseball pitchers CAN handle a 4-man rotation. There's little evidence to suggest short rest is bad, as long as pitch counts are maintained. The problem is that baseball has gotten so competitive that your 5th starter on full rest is better than your 3rd/4th starter on three day's rest. Therefore, you're better with a 5-man rotation, as a team.

 

Pitchers don't go as deep into games nowadays for two reasons. One, offense makes it difficult to pitch as long. A pitcher today will not last as many innings as a pitcher from the 60s, even if pitch counts are the same. Also, with seven relievers on most clubs, it makes no sense to bring a tired starter back out when a fresh fireballer is available in the pen.

As ChiSox fan im glad Ozzie wants the team to be aggressive, but working Burhele is 225+ innings is crazy. Burhele works fast, he rarely pauses after delivering pitches that could be a concern. Btw, Tigers will be in last place in another month or two.
