Of course it's the Expos. No other team's been screwed around as much as they've been. At least the Red Sox and Cubs make it to the playoffs once in a while and choke there.

Still though, you gotta admit, the Expoes are probably the worst misery team out there. Especially if they actually make the playoffs anytime here soon.

The Expos could have been great. The World Series was within their grasp in 1994. Say what you will about the Cubs & Red Sox, at least they blow it on the field. The Expos always end up getting screwed over.

And people forget that Tony Fernandez had one hell of a World Series up until that point.

 

Jose Mesa crumbling to the pressure did far more to cost Cleveland that WS than that one play did.

Its much better to have a franchise like the Red Sox than a franchise like the Expos. There is NO worse feeling in sports than having management who just doesn't give a damn about the team as anything more than a cash cow.

 

As for Steinbrenner, the post-'94 version is good, but the pre-suspension version was a black mark on baseball.

I'd have to say that the Red Sox are more msierable than the Cubs. Both teams choke, yes. But Red Sox fans come off as being bitter and vindictive toward the Yankees and everything, where as Cubs fans are a lot more easy-going and enjoy the games.

I dont see how the Orioles are #26.

 

- Haven't been to the World Series since 1983

- Haven't been to the playoffs since 1997

- Worst start to a season ever in 1988 (0-21)

- 6 straight 4th place finishes (1998-2003)

- Jeffrey Meier in 1996 Playoffs

And going a bit further back you have:

- Lost to the "Miracle Mets" in 1969 World Series

 

A nice ballpark doesn't really negate the last 20 years save 2. They should be lower.

That's the fault of the people of Boston though, not the team. The team is better than the Cubbies, or at least has been since the 40s.

 

Personally, I think the Marlins are too high. Sure they won two WS in a short time, but they were miserable every other year and the fire sale was awful. The Orioles are also too high, especially if you include the Browns years.

 

I agree on the Expos, but I would put the White Sox next. Not only do they have the Black Sox thing, but they have made I believe one WS since then. The Cubbies aren't great either, but they have certainly been less miserable than the White Sox over the years.

I think the Angels are too high. Before that championship, they were the very definition of a cursed team.

 

For some of the teams, an off-the-field moment could take precedense over their picks. For Yankee fans, was 1995 really worse than Thurman Munson's crash? Or Darryl Kile's death for Cardinals fans?

How about Atlanta being too high? One championship after winning every divisional title (minus the strike year) since 1991. They got nothing when they were good in the late 60s-early 70s either, and in the 80s they were the joke of baseball.

Well, 13 years of good baseball is tough to dispute. The only thing you can hit them for is the postseason, but statistically you only have an 8:1 shot of winning it all anyway. So one in 12 isn't too far out of line.

The Cub fans have already forgave Bartman.

God damn, the Cub fans (probably 90% of them now anyway) have already all admitted they would have went for the ball and were just pissed off when he first did it. The Bartman grudge has been over since December. The guy is a Cubs fan and stuff happened to him. Be glad he wasn't a Yankee or Red Sox fan, he would have never gotten out of the stadium alive...the cops would have shot him and sprinkled crack on him.

 

The Cubbies shouldn't really be on the list. They are the lovable losers, the fans are so used to losing that its no longer as miserable as the media wants to make it out to be. They go out to the ballpark, they sing "Take me out to the ballgame" and watch some baseball with the bleacher bums.

 

The Cubs fans are always wait till next year while some of these other fans are like "son of a bitch! We blew it forever!" How can the Cubs fandom be miserable when they have no clue what the World Series even LOOKS like.

I would have to say the #1 thing that is screwing the Expoes over is the fact they reside in Montreal.

Bullshit. When the Expos were winning, they drew. In the 80s, they finished in the top 3 in attendance in the NL several times. The fans don't show up because ownership pissed on them. They couldn't even negotiate a tv contract. How the fuck are fans supposed to get excited about their team when they don't see them?

Yeah, the Red Sox management gave a damn, they have just been inept. Fron Frazee selling Ruth, to the Yawkeys' racist attitudes (they could have had Robinson, if I recall, and the Sox were one of the last teams to get a black player), to Duquette declaring that Clemens was "past his time"
