NEW YORK - Philadelphia Phillies (news) pitcher Randy Wolf's brother was hired as a major league baseball umpire Friday.

 

 

 

Jim Wolf can work Randy's games, but not behind the plate, baseball spokesman Matt Gould said.

 

 

Jim Wolf began umpiring minor league games in 1994, most recently in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League from 1999-03. He also worked spring training games the past six seasons, and has more than 500 days experience as a major league umpire.

 

 

The Wolfs already have been on the field together in the majors, the first time in April 2001, with Jim the third-base umpire.

 

 

NFL official Byron Boston is the father of Miami Dolphins (news) wide receiver David Boston and is not assigned to his son's games.

 

 

Jim Wolf "has proven himself at the major league level in the past and has the ability to be a very successful major league umpire for many years," said Sandy Alderson, executive vice president of baseball operations.

 

 

Wolf will join Tim McClelland's umpiring crew Monday.

 

That's a bad idea. Jim shouldn't work Randy's games, period.

In Spring Training games he's given Randy a really tight strikezone. Randy complains about him constantly...it could be the first time we see an ump and pitcher in actual fist-u-cuffs

If he's doing good, let him ump behind the plate for his brother's games. Unless it becomes an obvious problem, then take him away.

He shouldn't be doing his brother's games at all. Even if he calls a solid game, if the other team loses there are going to be allegations of favoritism. People around here always bring up the integrity of the game, and anytime you get a family member involved, there are bound to be a LOT of questions about the integrity of the game.

Yes, his brother is the pitcher. But c'mon now. Do you really think he'd like to lose his job? He'll call it down the line unless he's a jackass.

 

I really don't believe in this shit. You see favoritism all along the league. Or umps who give a bigger or weaker strikezone to different pitchers. So please don't play the "favoritism card". I really don't buy that brother crap.

 

If the guy does show favoritism to his brother, then pull his ass. If he doesn't, then leave him be.

Its the impression of a conflict of interest that's the problem. MLB shouldn't let an umpire in that position at all, regardless of whether he does his job well. Besides, out of 2,000+ games in the big leagues, we're talking 32-35 games a year. That's not asking much.

Honestly, if you want them to stop this, they're gonna have to take care of every case of perceived bias which certainly isn't limited to blood lines (As I'm sure the mid-late 90s Brave's pitchers can attest)

Randy is a pitcher and Jim is an ump. You honestly don't think Jim has some hate towards his brother since he is stuck as a lowly ump?

 

Let him call the game and then have MLB review the tape. If all is fine, move on.
