No surprise with "Van Helsing", but big one with "New York Minute." Is it safe to call it a bomb ? To release it in over 3,000+ theatres and only make $6.2 Million ? That's got to be a let-down.

New Your Minute lost alot of money because it was released too early, just look at the competition it has of Mean Girls and 13 Going on 30.

That is a disappointing number for Van Helsing too, I believe. Didn't X2 make something like $80 million on this weekend last year? And although it was a hit, it didn't exactly set the world on fire the way Finding Nemo or Pirates of the Carribbean or even Matrix Reloaded did last summer.

Even though there is no chance in hell I will go see it, major props to "Mean Girls" for holding very strong.

 

Ditto for "Man on Fire" which is looking like it might end up with a "Training Day" type run for Denzel.

 

As for NYM, who would have thought the Direct to DVD twins wouldn't do well at the box office?

I'm more interested in seeing how Shrek holds up against the onslaught of The Day After Tomorrow and Harry Potter. Van Helsing and next week, Troy, are both going to have really strong first weekends, b ut then quickly get lost in the shuffle of all the other big hits coming out in the next 2-3 weeks and will ultimatly end up being considerd Box Office Failures.

I don't think it is fair to compare X2 (which as a sequel you expect to do better than the first) to Van Helsing.

"Troy" has another advantage that "Van Helsing" besides big ass war pic.

 

Orlando Bloom and Brad Pitt running around meaning some girls are going to go just to drool over them. Guys will go for the death, ladies will go for staring.

After a string of home video hits, the Olsen twins debuted their first theatrical motion picture release over the weekend and audiences responded with a very firm verdict - go back to the shelves of Blockbuster! New York Minute, a comedy which finds Mary-Kate and Ashley playing twin sisters on an all-day adventure in Manhattan, opened poorly in fourth place with an estimated $6.2M from an ultrawide 3,006 theaters. The PG-rated film averaged an embarrassing $2,076 per location. If estimates hold, the Warner Bros. release will boast the third-worst opening weekend in history for a 3,000+ theater launch behind kidpics The Wild Thornberrys ($6.01M in 3,012 theaters in 2002) and Quest for Camelot ($6.04M in 3,107 theaters in 1998). The audience for Minute was mostly young girls.

What's sad is that the Olsens can just greenlight a direct-to-video film next week and score a quick $5, $10 mil or so from it.

Troy will attract both crowds. I am sure they purposely worked in the love story to bring in the female audience.

 

I, however, have no interest whatsoever in Troy.

Being a big fan of Greek mythology, I'm VERY interested in seeing "Troy."

I think Troy will have a strong opening weekend (40-50) and then bomb big time from then on.

 

I did not expect Van Helsing to bring in that much money. I expected it to be a hit, but 54 mil? Gahdamn.
