Comcast Completes Acquisition of TechTV

PHILADELPHIA, May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Comcast Corporation today announced that it has completed the purchase of TechTV from Vulcan Programming, Inc. and, as planned, will merge it with G4, the Comcast-owned television network devoted to video games and the gamer lifestyle. EchoStar Communications Corporation will have an equity interest in the combined entity. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Beginning May 28, the two channels will merge into one network called G4TechTV and will be available in approximately 44 million cable and satellite homes nationwide. The merged channel will be headquartered in Los Angeles. "We are confident that G4TechTV will offer value to the many affiliates; advertisers; content partners; and viewers of both G4 and TechTV," said Charles Hirschhorn, CEO of the merged network. "The combined programming lineup will let viewers continue to enjoy their favorite shows while, at the same time, introducing them to new programming. Additionally, we have begun to develop new, exciting original programming that will premiere later this year."

Viewers who have questions about the merger may log onto

Shows making the combined channel -

From Tech TV:

Anime Unleashed

Body Hits

Eye Drops

Fresh Gear

Future Fighting Machines

Invent This

Nerd Nation

Robot Wars

The Screen Savers

Thunderbirds

X-Play

Unscrewed

From G4:

Arena

Cheat!

Cinematech

Electric Playground

Filter

G4TV.com

Icons

Judgment Day

Players

Portal

Pulse

Sweat

I have no idea how this is going to work, but they could have at least decided on a better name for the channel than G4TechTV.

Additionally, all this week shows from Tech TV will air on G4 and vice versa. Im just dying to see some of these G4 shows. Tech TV gets most of G4's shows but G4 is only getting X Play, Unscrewed and Fresh Gear..

No more Starcade?  :(

well along those lines, no more Call for Help or Tech Live. I can do without Tech Live but Call for Help was the first show I saw on ZDTV, which ironically enough, launched on this day, May 11, in 1998.

and side note:

Both channels will have some E3 coverage on Wednesday. G4 has E3 Live and TechTv has X Play at E3.

I've never gotten G4, but I love TechTV and could watch it all day (besides battlebots, ugh). Not sure what to think of this, but I guess it's for the better. More quailty shows = thumbs up, I suppose.

Considering all the repeats on TechTV I wouldn't be surprised if they could fit nearly all the shows on the same channel.

I'd laugh if they fired Sessler.

No more Starcade? :(

Starcade was cancelled several weeks ago because the people on their forum were becoming harder than hell to deal with, flaming and screaming and shouting about how the show was just too old.

Bastages. Now I see more episodes of "Filter" than ever. And they should have dumped shit like Thunderbirds. Come on already.

I heard they fired the whole TechTV staff, which includes Morgan Webb, Laura Swisher, and Martin Sargent.

AND THE INTERNS! WHAT ABOUT THE INTERNS?

That can't be right. How can they have Unscrewed without Martin Sargent?

The story from CNet.

According to that, 285 people were given their notices, while 80 will be kept on to work for the new channel. I don't know if that includes hosts or not.

That said, it'd be very stupid to ditch some of those hosts, considering the fanbase they have.

Holy shit. They can't dump Morgan Webb. Just move her back to TSS. :(

If they fire the hosts --- why even keep the shows?

Because the dumbasses think the shows are what bring in the ratings.

No Morgan Webb = No X-Play.

No Martin or Swisher = No Unscrewed.

Webb was actually the replacement for some punky chick that, while not as hot, was probably better at the job.

Plus, it isn't so much Morgan herself as it is Morgan's boobs. Everyone knows that.

Amen to that. The same goes for Laura Swisher.

As with a lot of things, this could be very very good, or very very bad.

I'm predicting bad since Leo is gone. Leo was the only on-air personality that knew what he was doing.

I found out that just about all the on-air personalities were offered to keep their jobs if they relocated to LA (I believe). I don't know who did and who didn't (except for Leo).

Almost a year later, one of the last pieces of the former TechTV Network is going away. Next week, the Screensavers will be renamed..

...drumroll...

ATTACK OF THE SHOW!

The only TechTV show that remains is X Play, and they've crapped that up too.

*deletes the now just G4 (they dropped the TechTV part earlier this year) from my directv guide, thank you very much Comcast*

No Morgan?

NO MORGAN??

Screw that. She's just about the only reason I ever watch G4. That and watching Lee "Hawk" Reherman wondering what the hell happened to his career after American Gladiators.

What? Where's this coming from about no Morgan?

Unless you were reading it and didn't realize this thread is from last year. And did you all honestly watch Unscrewed, and the Screensavers, and all those shows? If so..weird. Most of the only shows worth watching on this channel are the new ones. There's X-play, Electric Playground, Judgment Day...and that's really about it. Occasionally something like players is interesting, some of the 'stupidity' of some of the celebrities up there is pretty funny.

No. The abbreviation on DirecTV is G4, but the station is still G4TechTV. The commercials even say so.

I like the channel. I've watched X-Play since it was Extended Play, and Filter has some fun lists and the sexy Diane Mizota. Electric Playground, The Screen savers, and Judgment Day are also pretty good.

Also, Morgan Webb= teh sex.

Hopefully this channel dies a quick death. I can't believe that they axed the entire crew from the Screen Savers.

Electric Playground is awful, none of the content interests me, and the sight gags, so-called humor, skits and what have you are all extremely forced. Meanwhile Judgement Day is somehow even worse than before with the Versus thing, which is just a bad, bad idea. Tommy and Victor both are just douchebags and I can't fathom how they've gathered so many rabid mutants willing to defend the show to the death.

On TSS, I recall Leo already had a diminished role in order to take over Call for Help, and both Kevin Rose and Sarah were regulars before the sale, so they didn't get rid of the "entire" crew, or at least not initially, since Yoshi was let go a few months ago, which was a dumb move. However I really don't care one way or the other about the name change. That's really a very minor thing compared to how many other changes they've made.

X-Play really isn't that different from how it was on the old channel. To the best of my knowledge Morgan and Adam both have big, perhaps increased roles in how the show is run, so if anyone is to blame for any perceived changes, it's them.

Unscrewed was all hit and miss. I like Martin, at times, and Laura Swisher's breasts are fantastic, but she was just ruthlessly unfunny. I don't miss it too much.

And not that I was a fan before, but the new Cheat is awful. Cory Rouse was a capable host who was a bit geeky and could connect with the fanbase, but the new host, apparently some American Idol reject, is terrible. Pretty much another Diane Mizota, aka some chick from Hollywood looking for a payday, but the people seem to have accepted the former since she's a good host, unlike the new broad who's simply stiff as a board.

All the sets are likewise awful. They're all either pastel or neon, much too modern, metrosexual and annoyingly bouncy.

I also find that, lately, they're talking down to their audience a lot more.

Can't believe I just wrote that much about such an overall awful channel.

I'm not too sure about that, because the show's drop in quality seemed to be pretty closely correlated with G4's takeover.

Nice opinion piece on the G4TechTV/X-Play situation: http://www.websnark.com/archives/2005/03/the_passion_of.html

Of course, the key word is *opinion*, and unlike the writer of the above I think that Victor is a douche based on his JD performances I've seen.

Hehe actually no I never even noticed the date and timestamp. That'll learn me not to panic.
