converge241 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2004 When asked about the travel arrangements roger clemmens had into his contract (he does not have to travel on the road games that he is not starting) Bonds said something to the effect of "a man of color would never get thatkind of deal only a white man" (i heard it on the radio and cant find exact quote but if anyone has it please post) i dont see how this has anythign to do with race clemmens got the deal because 1) he insisted on it to come out of "retirement" 2) its only really do-able with a pitcher im sure if bonds asked for a similar deal to stay witht the giants they might consider it or an older minority pitcher with some stature (im sure a pedro martinez could get this down the road)
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted May 11, 2004 The worst part is Wilbon actually tried to defend him on PTI for saying this. I wonder if this goes under the half of the things he doesn't even believe when he says. I mean he really whines a lot about race when he has it a hell of a lot easier than a lot of guys who actually had a reason to and didn't.
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2004 I'm shocked, SHOCKED, that Wilbon would defend Bonds on PTI regarding this issue. Fuck you Barry, and I hope your winky is now as long as my pinky due to all the "supplements" you "allegedly" took...
C Dubya 04 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2004 Things like this is why the majority of fans will never say that Barry is the best baseball player ever. He's just such an asshole and all of his amazing accomplishments will never overcome that.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2004 I was led to understand that Clemmens didn't ask for this provision. It was offered to him.

C Dubya 04 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2004 Well, looking back at other examples, Ty Cobb is probably not given his due for being the best hitter because he was a racist and an asshole. Barry has been striving to reach that level for a few years now. Besides things like these comments, Bonds has been a dick with things like not letting the league license his name when players from his fathers depend on that money for their pensions. nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2004 Was Barry Balco sitting in that plush leather chair that he gets in the locker room? The one that no other Giant - regardless of race or ethincicity - gets? Man, he's got it rough all right.
converge241 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2004 "I was led to understand that Clemmens didn't ask for this provision. It was offered to him" maybe the rangers were talking about giving him this type of deal to coax him out because roger said he wanted to be close to home as much as possible the astros then offered it probably based on that but i thought i read that he did ask that it was in the wording of his deal? still the same deal though as far as im sure if the money was all even im sure one team over another another would give some concessions i still dont get how he doesnt see that this is easier for a pitcher to be given this set up as opposed to a positional player imagine if someone says "oh bonds makes that pouty face when he strikes out cause he's black and a white man would never do that"??? that person would be seen as such an idiot..he makes that over-reacting face because he is a good hitter and gets frustrated with being shown up by a pitcher here and there (and coincidentally the one who has shown him up the most so far this year:clemmens)

I often say "what if today's media had been around during... (WWII, the Depression, etc.)" in a sarcastic way, but I think seeing Ty Cobb in today's media world would be great -- he'd make John Rocker look like an alter boy... The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2004 1. Cobb would be in jail if he was around today. He makes the worst most dispicable athlete you can think of look like a saint. 2. The testiment to how great Cobb was is seen in the first HOF class...where despite being hated by everyone...he recieved more votes than anyone else who had played the game...including Ruth. It's only in the time since they've both died that people started saying Ruth was better...the people that were around at the time saw it the other way. 3. I must have been mistaken. I thought I lived in a world where Barry Bonds got more media attention than any other athlete today. How much more time can the media really spend calling him the greatest player in the game today and then putting his name up there with the Ruth's, Cobb's, Mantle's, Dimaggio's, Williams's and Mays's...even with the whole steroids issue looming...before he gives up this "whole world is against me because I'm black" routine? He's the best. We know he's the best. People don't like him because he's an asshole...and now there are legit questions about steroid use hanging over him. If it's a race issue...that's news to me. NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2004 wow it has only been 3 days on the new job and I already miss watching ATH/PTI in the afternoon. Here in the west coast they come on at 2/2:30pm
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted May 12, 2004 I'm starting to lose it with both shows to be honest. Wilbon is starting to get annoying on PTI with his constant defending any black athlete's race baiting no matter how insane it is. On ATH Mariotti has been extremely annoying as of late with this "I'm always right" crap.
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2004 I altered my shedule at my job just so I can watch ATH while working out. I can only take PTI every now and then, mostly due to Mad Dog's reason. Ugh. His defense of Sapp's "slavemaster" comments a while back pretty much was the final straw, not to mention thier opinions of that U. Colorado rape talk... EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2004 I think Ty Cobb's anger was overstated. Yes, he had his incidents, but this was a time in which fistfights were a regular occurance. I think Cobb today would be roughly comparable to Albert Belle, or someone of that nature.
