Syracuse changes school nickname

Recommended Posts

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Say goodbye to the Orangemen -- and the Orangewomen.

From now on, Syracuse University's athletic teams will be known simply as the Orange and have the same logo, an interlocking SU.

"We are the only school in the country that has orange as its official color. We want to accentuate that fact," director of athletics Jake Crouthamel said Tuesday at a press conference. He noted that Texas and Tennessee have a substantial amount of white to go with the orange in their uniforms.

The announcement came after two years of consultations with Nike, which supplies uniforms for men's and women's basketball, men's lacrosse, and football. All 21 of Syracuse's athletic teams will use the new mark.

"It standardizes what we do," Crouthamel said. "We don't have to order 14 different logos. We've had somewhere in the neighborhood of 19 or 20 logos that we've used on athletic apparel. Where's the consistency?"

The new logo will incorporate a consistent color palette, using a brighter orange than the current version and a darker blue. The school's colors have been orange and blue since 1890.

"We looked through media guides, and we found that the university has not had one single athletic logo since 1870, when it was founded," said Sue Edson, director of athletic communications. "It's pretty important to us."

Especially for one reason.

"This is about identity," said longtime equipment manager Kyle Fetterly, a member of the committee of coaches and school officials who made the decision. "Every time I see a navy blue hat with a yellow block 'M' on it, I know it's Michigan. Every time I see a red hat with a cream-colored 'A' on it, I know it's Alabama.

"Everybody I talk to around town refers to us at SU, so why isn't it SU?" It's about time."

The football team will be the first to showcase the new logo and colors in the fall, and Crouthamel said the large 'S' over the basketball on the hoops uniforms would disappear next season.

"We will eventually get into the new look," Crouthamel said. "It's going to take some amount of time. We'll work our way through it."

Nike also has done similar work for the University of Oregon, the University of Washington, Miami, and Kentucky.

Yeah they wanted to accentuate the color orange. Sure.. Why the fuck does everything have to be 100% politically correct all of the time? Pussies.

Fuck that- it was about consistency, not PC. All Michigan players are Wolverines, all Notre Dame players are the Fighting Irish, and now, all SU athletes are The Orange. It gives a sense of unity, and I like that.

I'm happy that we got one name, one color scheme, one logo. You'd be surprised how many freaking SU logos there are- the one with the big S with 1870 underneath it, the basketball logo, Otto- it was frustrating. Not to mention how all the teams had a different shade of blue- royal, navy, midnight- it's a wonder no one had Carolina blue as a uniform color. It was ugly, and it needed to be fixed. I, for one, am glad they did it. Good job Syracuse.

Guest Smell the ratings!!!

it's just good to know that in these modern times, women can be just as orange as men if not more.

Well, at least they didn't rename themselves the Orange Goblins.

Anyways, Orange is different, and manages to avoid the plural. Can't really complain...

(edit) I also just realized that this could bring in a natural partnership with ING Direct...

Great, they are now the Syracuse Tanning Booth accident.

The Syracuse Orange...christ, that's really pathetic.

Am I the only one who won't use this and doesn't use the St. Johns Red Storm bullcrap?

Adjectives do not make good mascots

Stanford is "The Cardinal"... that being "Cardinal" the shade of red, not "Cardinal" the bird.

I didn't know Cardinal was a shade of red

and as a corollary, I always thought Stanford was "The Cardinal" as in "A Cardinal" as in a bird.

none of this explains the tree, however.

Guest El Satanico

Why not use that mascot thing as a logo...surely more interesting than "SU". Why must they even give themselves a nick name. Just calling themselves Syracuse or Syracuse University would be better than this the orange business.

Or here's a novel idea, keep the colors and change everything else to something entirely new. It's not like The Orangemen was such a great name that they couldn't kill it off completely.

Yes I know, and my point stands

Another example: The Minnesota Wild

Adjectives do not make good mascots

"We are the only school in the country that has orange as its official color. We want to accentuate that fact,

They're saying this like it's something to be proud of -- riiiiiiiiiight...

Plus, that's pretty arrogant to presume they are the only school to have orange as it's color.

Ex: What about Miami, which features orange prominently on its uniforms?

I think that the Cardinal is the type of tree found on that Stanford logo, but I could be wrong.

And hope this doesn't affect the men's basketball uniforms too much... I thought those were pretty nice.

The tree in the logo is based on a redwood known as El Palo Alto which is a landmark in the city of Palo Alto where Stanford University is located.

Stanford was the Indians until 1972 when they went the PC rout.

They should go by "The Mighty Orange of Syracuse" and have an angry looking orange (the fruit) serve as their mascot. I'm thinking something that looks like the Hawaiian Punch guy, but more pissed off.

As long as they don't produce any hideous uni's like last year's Oregon jerseys, I am alright with it.

What about "The Orange Crush" and have a giant pop can ready to do battle?

I hope Illinois doesn't pull this PC crap and get rid of the Fighting Illini. But it seems like as long as they want alumni to give to the school, Chief Illiniwek will stay.

They probably won't, because the name actually honours Native Americans. It's not as if it's a derogatory term like a certain NFL team uses...

Well damn I didn't realize how lucky I am. My school switched from Savages to Eagles. I guess I should be very happy that they didn't switch to an adjective. This political correctness is really going too far, I swear. Although the idea for the pissed off orange mascot would be great.

On top of that, the school actually coordinates with the Illini and uses their authentic tribal dress and whatnot

Same for FSU and the Seminoles

My high school was called the Golden Warriors, but some local Native Americans complained and petitioned that we change the name. The town voted it down, but instead just compromised and dropped the "Golden" and modified the symbols to look less stereotypical.

Interestingly, the Golden Warriors name is relatively recent (1950s) and was chosen to replace the old name (Blue Devils) which was deemed too Satanic or something for Puritanial New England.
