I had this debate with people at school today, talking baseball. It started with soccer and hockey goaltenders and spread to pitchers. What constitutes a more interesting game: batters knocking balls out of the park left and right for nine innings, or watching two pitchers rack up Ks and other assorted outs until one error turns the course of the game?

They say "Who wants to watch a 0-0 game? That's not exciting to watch, that means they suck."

I say "Well a 6-6 game means the [pitchers/goalies] are playing like crap."

We both have our merits to our arguments. I think I was more eloquent, but that's personal bias. :) But if you told me you could control the play of a Cubs-Astros game, and you asked me what I'd rather see, I'd have to say I'd get more enjoyment from Wood and Clemens dueling and the fielding not allowing runs for 8+ innings than Sosa, Alou, Ramirez and whoever's hitting well for Houston these days hitting out-of-the-park homers.

Pitchers duels are some of the most furstrating yet fulfilling games.

If it's tv...I want a Pitcher's Duel.

At the park? Homer filled madness.

I find the games more fun live with the bats alive...because usually a pitchers duel gives a quiet crowd.

"Doesn't matter as long as the game is competitive"

Agreed.

I'll take either one.

Then again, Cone's perfect game makes my top ten list of baseball games. Had to call that competitive.

I think EVERYONE wants to see their favorite player nail one outta the park. It's just so much fun to stand up and watch the ball sail over the wall. pitcher's deuls are great games, but they don't match the level of excitement you get from a real shootout.

The same can be said for football, too.

It goes for hockey, with a goaltenders' duel. It doesn't go for football because it's just rows of men smashing into each other and grabbing teammates' asses. It doesn't have that same component of a winning and losing player the way baseball and hockey do.

And we all know low-scoring basketball sucks.

As long as the tensions are really high, I can live with it. Fighting is always a plus. I feel about the same way as Choken on the subject. Live games are way better when balls are getting cracked out left and right.

Pitcher's duel by far.

Slugfests are lazy -- tune in anytime and see one get hit out of the park. Yay. With a pitcher's duel you have to watch every out becuase you don't know who will break first...

That's pretty much exactly how I feel. I'd rather see two good pitchers go at it than see a couple of scrubs get fitted for neck braces because they had to tirn around and watch so many homers leave.

Why not both? a team thats up 10-0 and the pitcher A is shutting down the other team, while A gets plenty of run support. Slugfest is what I perfer, I only like a pitching duel if both pitchers have alot of K's.

I love a good slugout as much as the next guy. But there is something sweet when two pitchers just have their stuff going. But in the case of a pitcher duel, I would like to see it between star pitchers like Pedro vs Clemons, or Randy Johnson vs. Jason Schmidt. I like the duels where you have pitchers who throw amazing pitches, which just put you in awe. Or if one pitcher is throwing a no hitter, and the other pitcher is also throwing a no hitter, then those games are amazing to watch.

But if it is a duel where the pitchers are throwing junk, and the teams are getting hits, but then hitting into inning ending double plays, then I'd rather see a shootout. Sometimes it's fun to see teams battle back and forth, matching run for run. And especially if you get the top two offensive teams going against each other, then I would prefer a high scoring game.

I prefer a pitchers duel. Sure when you are at a game live you want to see homeruns, but still a pitchers duel is more entertaining. I was at all three games of the Braves Vs. Mariners series last year and all three games were just incredible. Each team scored a TOTAL of 5 runs in the three games, no homeruns, all the starting pitchers were ON, I wanna say they all went at least 7 innings, but I can't remember for sure. My girlfriend who isn't a baseball fan was with me and she loved it.

A good baseball game is the one that's on.

Are you saying that there's no such thing as a bad baseball game?

Because I've seen some real clunkers.

It does, actually.

Either a defensive game, or a shootout with tons of long balls.

I like to see shit done right. If a team is scoring points because it's executing offense the way it's supposed to be done, I'm with it. If there's great defense being played, I enjoy that too.
