More Q and A

May 21, 2004

Q: Are wrestlers still fans and do they look forward to watching certain match ups?

A: While I can't speak for everyone, I would say most of us are still very much fans of wrestling. There has certainly been many matches I have looked forward to seeing and there are many times that after someone has a particularly good match the boys greet them when they come through the curtain with a round of applauses. I don't think we could do this job properly if we weren't still fans of it.

Q: What was it like working with Chris Adams?

A: I only ever tagged with Adams, on a rather ill fated trip to Lebanon in 1992. The disastrous events of that trip over shadowed any memories I have of the one maybe two tag matches we had. By the time we had our matches together we were more concerned with getting out alive than having good matches.

Q: Can you body slam Big Show?

A: Are you kidding me? I've already got a bad back. I wouldn't even try!

Q: What are your thoughts on the Torrie and Sable Playboy issue?

A: I saw the pictorial. What can I say? Curiosity got the better of me. To be honest it bothered me a bit. I found it weird, almost disturbing, how interchangeable they were in it. With all the airbrushing and touch ups they do to photos, I thought they looked way too much alike; they didn't look like individual people anymore, which they are in person. I felt the same way after watching an MTV Cribs from the Playboy mansion. There were a dozen or so girls that had the same fake dyed blonde hair the same fake boobs, the same over done make up, you couldn't' tell them apart. It seemed like he simply had an assembly like in the basement producing living Barbie dolls.

Q: Did you have the highest vertical leap in ECW?

A: If I had to guess I would say probably. I don't know for sure. I'm pretty sure I had Balls and Big Sal beat!

Q: Was there a chance to reprise the Impact Players in WWE?

A: What a great question. Yes there was but someone, not the office, blew it. For more details you will have to wait for my Autobiography.

Q: Where did the rolling ½ Crab come from and how hard is it to do?

A: Like all great moves it was stolen. Oddly enough the guy I stole it from doesn't even remember using it. I saw Terry Taylor do it into a full Boston Crab in a match against Wild Bill Irwin, on a WCW Clash or PPV. I started using it shortly there after in Japan. It was a little slower getting into the full crab so I started using just the ½ crab, which made it way smoother. When I went to WCW I was debating on using the rolling crab or my Deep Impact Pile Driver as a finish. My first match was against Disco. I asked him which he would rather take and he said the crab, so my finish was born. The move is easier or harder depending on the guy I'm putting into it. For some reason Kurt Angle was the best for it. I would instantly roll straight to me feet with him, when normally I only manage to roll up to me knees with others.

Q: Whom would you consider a wrestling genius? (This refers to your Comments on Raven in a past Q and A)

A: I don't like the term genius. There are guys who are great at booking, creating gimmicks and characters, putting matches together, electrifying crowds. Etc. but I don't think that necessarily a genius makes. In my opinion this industry can be broken down into very basic elements and despite very few people understanding these basic concepts, those who do are not, in my opinion, geniuses.

Q: Do you think Kayfabe should be brought back?

A: I don't' think it is possible and those who try are embarking on a futile journey. It's like coming out of the closet, once you are out you are out. Ellen and Rosie can't just decide their career was better before they came out and now just tell everyone they are straight. They are gay we know they are gay, denying it would be stupid. The same goes for wrestling, we've told everyone it's entertainment and we've shown the fans Tough Enough, we've told them we have writers and don't hurt each other. You can't take that back and say all "faces" hate all "heels" and that darn Undertaker is really dead! Now that doesn't mean we should take the curtain down completely. We shouldn't expose anymore of our tricks of the trade. I compare us to a magic show. We all know David Copperfield doesn't have real magic powers, but he doesn't post on his website how he does every trick, that would take the fun out of it. Admit the nature of our business and don't insult fans intelligence, but in the same breath don't expose future story lines or explain how particular stunts or "spots" are put together.

Q: What are your thoughts on fans that use "Wrestle Speak"?

A: I'm assuming this comes on the heels of Ric Flair's comments. For those who missed it Flair did an interview and got quite upset when a fan used the terms "heel" and "face" and stated something to the effect that those are inside terms and fans should not use them. I think there is a line where I would agree with Ric, although my line is obvious nowhere near his. I have no problem with fans using some inside terms; they are so common now that I don't think they are even used consciously. My biggest problem is the use of the term "worker". My brother uses it all the time and it makes me cringe, every time he does. "I saw this kid at the Stampede show last night. He's a pretty good worker." UGGGG. No he's a pretty good "wrestler". If you are a fan and you liked a guy's match you should say he is a good wrestler, or he had a good match. "Worker" is a term that refers to something else all together and a fan using it drives me nuts. I don't expect fans to go back to calling guys "fan favourites" and "rule breakers" but I do think there is a point where they are using terms for the sole purpose of trying to impress people with there knowledge and perhaps even out of fear of being viewed as just a "fan".

Well that's it for another week. We had some meatier questions this time around. Keep them coming and remember brief point form questions are my favourite.

Guest I Got Banned for Sucking

Yeah, I agree with him on that last question. Flair just lost it. I don't think that the term "worker" is quite as bad as he says, but it still does sound a bit like "slave", depending on how you consider it.

He's always so laidback, which is great, and has a positive, realistic outlook on things.

Nah. THE MAN killed ECW. Didn't you attend the "Wrestling Conspiracy Theories" meeting? That was brought up right after we talked about how Vinnie Mac sent Russo to WCW so he could kill off the competition, and then tried the same with TNA, but TNA started getting more popular because of Russo's influence and the hard work.

I always assumed worker and wrestler were the same, if not very similar. Is there an actual difference, or is this just Lance's thought on the term?

Storm and Credible did tag in the dark match before the UK Rebellion ppv in 2001, I'm not sure if they used the Impact Players name or not though?

Didn't they face Rock and Jericho one time? The match lasted like a minute, but the thought was there. Or did that have Raven in it?

Any know the details behind this? You'd think someone would heave realized beforehand that wrestling in Lebanon was a really bad idea?
