Spyware Help

Recommended Posts

Guest drdrainoscott

I have some sort of spyware on my computer that I cannot get rid of. My homepage keeps getting changed to searchexe.com and I keep getting a new toolbar to replace my google toolbar. I also have just gotten a whole bunch of new bookmarks.

Now I know everyone is going to tell me to download the cwshredder, but I already have run it numerous times and nothing comes up. I've run Adware and Search & Destroy as well. Any ideas?

Um, thanks for the help but I said that I have already downloaded CWshredder and Ad-aware. I still am having no luck. Anyone know of a place where more experienced computer people could help me?

Start the registry editor. This is done by clicking Start then Run. (The Run dialog will appear.) Type regedit and click OK. (The registry editor will open.)

Browse to the key:

'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \

CurrentVersion \ Run'

In the right pane, delete the value called 'Search-Exe', if it exists.

Exit the registry editor.

Restart your computer.

Start Windows Explorer and delete:

%ProgramsDir%\se\

Note: %ProgramsDir% is a variable. By default, this is C:\Program Files.

Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.

In Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Internet Options.

Click the Programs tab -> Reset Web Settings.

Go to the "Spyware Help" forum at cexx.org. They'll tell you to run the shredder, then to run Hijack This and copy/paste the log to the forums. So long as you're polite about it/follow the rules, they'll help you out step by step.

While you're there, check out the "How did I get infected in the first place?" thread. Download and run all that stuff to keep from getting jacked again.

Customize ad aware to scan in all the folders. If it's still there then go to msconfig and remove it from start up. It won't delete it but it should stop it from running.

Just go to www.download.com and download SpyBot Search Destroy 5.1 or Ad Aware. Run one of those two programs and all the spyware is gone.

You have to update the programs too...they don't come with the newest versions thats why you're missing the spyware. That's why when you see the option of update its usually a good idea.

Yeah I do that as well. I know what I am doing with computers it was just that I couldn't get rid of that spyware. I did some extensive searching the other day, though, I think I may have gotten rid of it. I had to download two programs called ISPfix and VX2Finder, and mess around in the registry. It hasn't reappeared in two days so I'm hoping its gone.

I have the exact same thing...I did all the stuff that people are saying. Like run spybot and run ad-aware and all of that, even going into the HKEY registry and all that...even though there was nothign there..? And it's still the same every time I turn the computer on so I'm not sure what's with it. But I just said whatever.

Hmm...I haven't heard of those 2 programs. I'll have to download them and check them out. Thanks for the info. You say they fixed the dastardly spyware problems though?

Yeah I'm pretty sure that it is all gone (fingers crossed). I found the instructions at www.cexx.org. That website is a bit confusing, so I just kind of used that site as a guide and made up my own steps.
