Garth 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 I've been watched a fair few indy matchs the last few days that have been really good, I didn't think they deserved to have a thread to purely pimp one match I liked so I've waited a few days so that I have a few that I can mention. Samoa Joe vs Paul London - ROH: Enjoyable match overall, thought it didn't go as long as it could of done and it kinda felt to my like the finish came out of no where. Definatly worth watching but I wouldn't go out the way to find it. Bryan Danielson vs Paul London 2/3 falls - ROH: This match was superb, told a good story, had excellent selling and kept me entertained for the entire 40 odd minutes. Worth tracking down. TPI 2003 Finals: Possible Spoilers if you haven't seen the event just yet but want to and don't know the finalists Danny Daniels vs Alex Shelley vs Chris Hero - IWA MS: I really enjoyed this match, I hadn't really been into Daniels throughout the TPI tournament but this match I enjoyed his work in. Chris Hero was excellent and I liked the story of Hero desperatly trying to win the belt from Daniels. Shelley proved to me in this match why he gets so pimped out by everyone, this was the first resonably long match I'd seen him in, the others being matchs from the qualifying rounds of the TPI. Definatly worth watching and makes me pleased I bought the TPI. So what other matchs has the smark community been watching from the indy scene recently that they'd like to tell us about? Mystery Eskimo 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 I don't remember which show its on, but Briscoes vs. Second City Saints (Punk/Cabana) for the RoH tag titles was one of the best tag matches I've seen in ages. I've also been, to my surprise, digging Xavier's recent matches. I never thought I'd say that.
Garth 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 All the Xavier matchs I've seen I've really enjoyed, although granted its not that many like 3 or 4. Is that the one where they won the tag titles Eskimo?
Mystery Eskimo 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 Yep, that one. Xavier bored me to tears as RoH champ, but he's improved a lot since his return, IMO anyway.
Garth 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 I never saw his title run, just his match with Scoot from Era of Honor begins and a bunch of matchs with him against John Walters in some fashion.
Mystery Eskimo 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 Yeah, the Walters matches were good. Thanks to bittorrent I've been downloading a load of RoH shows lately and they're some of the better matches on the cards. Who are the RoH tag champs at the moment? It's not still Special K is it? Guest OSIcon Report post Posted June 8, 2004 Bryan Danielson vs. Rocky Romero - Inoki Dojo Really good match. I am fairly behind on shows from this year (and am still waiting for a big ROH order to arrive) so this is definitely one of my top matches so far in 2004. The style they used worked really well and didn't come off too indy like it very well could have with any other two wrestlers. They wrestled more of a "worked-shoot match" (I don't like that term, but its the best way I can think of to describe it right now) but everything was done well and they didn't get overly-cute with anthing. Everyone knows that Danielson is really good, but Romero is certainly up there when it comes to good, young wrestlers. AJ Styles vs. Paul London - ROH I hadn't watched this in a while until putting it in about a week ago. Really strong match that holds up fairly well. My only problem with the match and the thing that keeps me from even considering this to be on the same level as Danielson-London, is that it is worked in the "US indy" style. Now, that is not necesarily a bad thing, but that style (much like the WWE style of wrestling) has some inherent problems. Lack of selling in places, moves that don't make complete sense but pop the crowd, bad transitions, ect. The Styles-London match had most, if not all, of those problems. Dragon-London frayed from that "style" (and the problems it contains) which is why it hovers above the rest. However, with that said, London-Styles was about as good of a US indy match that you'll see with good work and a fun story. Roderick Strong vs. Jimmy Jacobs - IWA-MS Decent. Both guys played their roles well with Strong breaking out some cool offense and Jacobs selling it really well. Strong is good and now that he is working all over the place, he'll only get better. Homicide vs. Steve Corino - "Barbed Wire Match" ROH I thought the match was alright. However, the buildup was outstanding which made the match itself better than it probably would have been otherwise. On the tape, ROH treated the match like a huge deal. From interviewing both wrestlers as they entered the building to showing them throughout the night as they prepared. Corino and entourage were especially spot-on, cutting a couple great promos and really getting across a realistic anticipation in their "preperation" segments. By the time the match came, I was 10 times more excited to see it then I was when I sat down to watch the tape. The match itself wasn't disappointing, but didn't blow me away either. All of the pre-match hype certainly helped it. Bryan Danielson vs. Bobby Quance - PWG Good match. The first part of the match was a solid build and the last five minutes were really fun. I wouldn't mind at all to see more of Quance on the east coast. Danielson was Danielson here. It's pretty hard to have below a "solid" match with him these days. I would say this was better then that, falling into the "good" category. Definitely better then his match against Teddy Hart match from MLW which is the weakest AmDrag match I've seen in the last year+.

Guest OSIcon Report post Posted June 8, 2004 Xavier was always unfairly shit on. His matches through the first 8 months of ROH were are forgettable. That is partially a result of his opponents and the fact that he was just a bland mid-carder thrown out there. As soon as he turned heel and won the title, his matches were all solid. His 11/9/02 match against Jay Briscoe is solid, his 12/7 title defense against Styles his solid (and heated), and his 12/28 title defense against London might be one of the most underrated matches of that year. It had great heat, tons of good nearfalls, and was just a good match overall. By the end of 2002, Xavier was still getting hated on by fans at the shows, but he was also having real good matches so the heat just made them *that* much better. Mystery Eskimo 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 No problem. Hero-Styles on Winter Wars should have been great, although I've not heard anything about it. Glory by Honor 2 is a bit of a disappointment, but still some good stuff in there.
Phoenix Fury Legdrop 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 (edited) Last night, I viewed quite a bit of a Matt Sydal in Gateway comp tape that fellow board poster Slingshot Suplex made me. There's no real depth to the stuff, but the flippy stuff is quite good, the gimmickry's so bizarre that it's way too fun not to watch, and it's fun watching Matt, Delirious, Daizee, and MsChif, right out of wrestling school. I also just finished Bryan Danielson vs. Bobby Quance from PWG's "Taste the Radnes", which basically was Dragon being really awesome, Quance being really awesome, and coming together to have a match that, while pretty good, was less than the two addends. Great struggle between the two at the beginning, ending with Quance kicking Dragon to throw him off his game. Dragon leaves the ring angrily to regroup, and comes back to work over Quance's middle torso. Very basic stuff, but Dragon makes it work so well. There's not much of a big babyface comeback, outside of a slightly extended version of one of the teaser babyface momentum changes, with a tremendous version of an old finisher to cap off the match. Guest Corino 1000 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 No problem. Hero-Styles on Winter Wars should have been great, although I've not heard anything about it. Glory by Honor 2 is a bit of a disappointment, but still some good stuff in there. AJ vs. Hero at Winter Wars was a phenonomenal match. Its definitly worth viewing. I saw that match around a day ago I recommend you view it. Also on the Winter Wars card theres alot more good matches like Nate Webb vs. Shane wasn't bad and neither was Delierous vs. Arik Cannon. Alot of good stuff there man.

JustJoe2k5 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 Jody Fleisch vs. Low Ki was one of the few "dream" matches that lived up to the hype in my opinion. Right now I'm watching RoH's The Battles Lines Are Drawn, with Alex Shelley vs. Matt Stryker and Chris Sabin vs. Jimmy Jacobs being standout matches so far. DangerousDamon 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 I've just watched AJ Styles vs Chris Sabin (ROH 6-28-03) and AJ Styles vs Kaz Hayashi(I forgot the date). The matches were solid matches, but they left me wanting more. ROH - 06.22.02 - Jody Fleisch vs. Spanky Another match I've watched. It's way too short and would have been a lot better if it had more time. Kinda makes me wish Jody Fleisch wasn't retired. I've also watched the infamous London/Shane street fight. That match is pretty sweet.
