Kaertos 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 From thedigitalbits.com: Video Business is now reporting that New Line will release the 4-disc The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Special Extended DVD Edition in December. There's no other details yet and no exact street date (although you can likely expect it early in the month rather than later), but at least we finally have a better idea on the timeframe for the release. From seeing a list of the scenes they added, I'm pretty sure this one will be the biggest improvement over the Theatrical Version.

Kaertos 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 I can add a little knowledge to LotC's post from reading the "Collector's Edition" EW mag I got with the RotK Theatrical DVD. I'm not sure if this is confirmation, but what the hey? - Showdown between Gandalf and The Witch King Apparently, The Witch King breaks Gandalf's staff. - The Houses of Healing scenes w/ Aragorn and Eowyn. Faramir may be included in these scenes but it isn't confirmed. Faramir is included as they show the beginnins of the relationship shown at the coronation ceremony. - Confrontation at The Black Gate between Aragorn and Sauron's Lieutenant During this scene, the Mouth of Sauron taunts the good guys with Frodo's mithril shirt to make them think he is dead. - Frodo and Sam at The Crossroads before they enter Mordor I'm not sure about the "before they enter Mordor" part, but there is a scene where Frodo and Sam dump the orc mail and a bunch of their stuff at a crossroads in Mordor. LaParkaYourCar 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 Perfect! With those scenes added this will be in my mind the most loyal adaptation of a book to movie that I've ever seen! All that will be missing is the Scouring of the Shire.

The scene where Frodo and Sam dump the orc mail is while they're in Mordor. Some people with a keen eye may have noticed that in the original version Frodo and Sam go from wearing orc mai in one scene to wearing their Shire gear in the next. The scene where it's dumped comes after (like in the book) Frodo and Sam run into a company of orcs headed for the black gate. The orc commander, who is obviously blind, thinks Frodo and Sam are part of the company and they end up marching amongst the orcs for a while. The crossroads scene will appear near the beggining of the movie, as they're still in Ithilien when they come to it.

Kaertos 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 Wow. I hadn't heard a thing about the Ithilien Crossroads scene. That's one of my favorite little moments of the book. I hope it makes it back in. Thanks Curry.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 I'm holding out for the LOTR edition that has all 3 movies in one SE package. I could careless about the documentaries or behind the scenes footage. I just want a complete uncut director's edition! MY PRECIOUS!
Anakin Flair 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 How the hell could they extend the end of that movie any more than they already did? It has like 5 or 6 false finishes!
LaParkaYourCar 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 Maybe they'll smooth out the ending and remove the odd pauses in the Extended Edition? Maybe those pauses are where extended scenes will go?
Garth 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 I'm looking forward to this, have over the last few months really gotten into LOTR, want the 4 disk edition of ROTK to complete the collection. Already double diped and bought 2 disk editon of it, but that was due to never seeing it at the cinema and really wanting to see it.
