Nice 9th inning comeback for The Cubs tonight, I almost missed it due to general frustration with our offense and The Lakers getting killed.

I missed the Cubs game completely because I was watching the Pistons game. Saw during halftime that they were down 2-1 in the 9th and figured that Zambrano was going to get a tough loss. Didn't turn out that way, as Dotel blew it. Glad the Cubs won, but sucks they couldn't come back against someone other than Dotel, who's also on my fantasy team. I figured that I'd avoid a loss because of Zambrano getting a no decision, but then realized that I'd still be getting it because of Dotel. Oh well, reality > fantasy.

Oh ya, I forgot to mention this a few days ago but I shall do so now. While I was at the doctor's on Monday I picked up some sports magazine with Terrell Owens in an Eagles jersey on the cover. Inside was a small article on John Smoltz. It said that if the Braves were out of contention he would be willing to wave his no trade clause to go to a contender. Team interested thus far are The Cubs and one other I can't remember. He said he wouldn't mind being a closer for the rest of 2004 but he would like whatever team trades for him to give him a shot at starting again in 05.

I heard him saying he wouldn't mind a trade if they were out of contention, too. Wouldn't be a bad pick-up for the Cubs, but obviously, it wouldn't be a long-term thing. I say they go for him and keep Hawkins in the setup role, since that's clearly where he's more comfortable.

Smoltz to Chicago: Yes. Are there any "great players who never won a World Series" that we can give a trade-deadline lift to?

Didn't Smoltz win a title with the Braves in 1995?

Smoltz to the Cubs would be awesome, but only if that elbow is totally healthy. The last thing they would need is one more injury.

Some good players near the end who never won a title. Excepting players like Bagwell and Biggio who are on teams that could win it already.

Rafael Palmeiro

Larry Walker

Edgar Martinez

John Franco

Wow...only 10 teams in MLB history have posted a 300+ run differential between runs scored/runs allowed.

1902 Pittsburgh Pirates(335)

1906 Chicago Cubs(324)

1927 New York Yankees(376)

1931 New York Yankees(301)

1936 New York Yankees(334)

1937 New York Yankees(308)

1939 New York Yankees(411), 967 RS vs 556 RA

1998 New York Yankees(309)

2001 Seattle Mariners(300)

Guess that sort of proves that the 1939 Yankees are the best MLB team ever huh?

I've been plugging the '39 Yankees as one of the best for awhile now. Five regulars posted .400+ OBPs. And if you think that's scary, just imagine how good they would have been had Gehrig not fell ill.

I can't wait until the weekend.

Yankees vs. Gagne.

It will FINALLY end.

On a side note, the Yanks have called up some Schmo to pitch in Mussina's spot. Oh well.

Trot Nixon makes his return tonight, playing in RF and hitting in the 6 hole. Nice to finally see the Red Sox lineup that we all thought would be there at the start of the season.

So the Yankees will intentionally suck until the 9th inning?

It can't be the Yanks. It's gotta be the Giants. It's the only way.

I know there's no one on our team who is capable of even making contact with Gagne, but it'll happen. You watch.

Anything else is just wrong if you ask me. Wrong.

7-6 is still a save.

I've got a bad feeling the South Side Hitmen might go after Smoltz. Gives them a closer, and could move into rotation if they keep him.

Well both Chicago teams are indeed very much in contention, which is only good if it leads to an El Series. Both teams do need a closer, but the Cubs need Smoltz more.

I wouldn't be so quick to break the streak anyway. On at least one occasion, Jim Tracy has declined to bring Gagne in a tight spot, with some surmising that the streak is affecting his usage pattern.

Chipper Jones has returned to 3B. Good for his HOF chances.

Hilarious cover to this week's USA Today Sports Weekly. It has Giants' closer Matt Herges on the cover (I have no idea why) and it reads "Matt Herges has learned from the best. Now he's putting those lessons to use. Racking Up Saves."

Yes he's got an ERA over 5 but he's racking up saves so who cares!? See some moron is going to see Herges on the cover and actually think he's good.

Not that I'm crying too loudly about it, but the Astros appear to be into a full nosedive. 4-1, Cubs win again and can sweep 4 games in Minute Maid tomorrow night. The injured Roy O. tries to stop the bleeding tomorrow night.

Cubs are now 20-19 all-time at Minute Maid, a stat that surprised the hell out of me.

Is that a region cover? I could've sworn I saw some Phillie on the cover today.

As for Herges, presumably the best includes Antonio Alfonseca, Rocky Biddle and Mike Williams. "How to use fancy save totals to disguise the fact that you pitch like a complete piece of crap."

If the (last place) Blue Jays weren't fucked enough, Vernon Wells fucked up his achilles tendon last night and is on the DL. So they're 3-4 hitters now are the hard-hitting tandem of Frank Menechino (!) and Reed Johnson. At this point I just hope they stay around where the Orioles and Rays are right now and play well in the 2nd half so they can finish in 3rd for the 40th season in a row. Finishing at least .500 would be nice.

And it's already 4-0 in the 1st for the Giants, in part thanks to not getting Bonds out in a rundown.

Ken Macha is a fucking moron. Situation is runner on 2nd with two out in the bottom of the 8th, A's down 3-2. Edgar Renteria is up and...Macha issues an intentional walk!? Why? Renteria hasn't hit well this year and who gives a shit about setting up a force at 2nd? Reggie Sanders up next...three run homerun.

Five strategies that almost never fail (to drive me up the wall).....

1. Bunting a runner from 2nd to 3rd.

2. Intentionally walking a batter with two outs

Exception: potential walk-off run is on base

3. Repeatably switching pitchers mid-inning in order to gain platoon advantages.

4. Keeping good pitchers in the bullpen and using sub-obtimum pitchers to start. Ryan Madsen's too valuable in the pen. Let's start Brian Powell!! What good is a bullpen when you have no hope of getting a lead in the first place?

5. Using lesser relievers in tie games because its not a "save situation."
