3. Repeatably switching pitchers mid-inning in order to gain platoon advantages.

Nails on a chalkboard.

Let's file "Start Tanyon Sturtze" under "Never, ever again"

Especially annoying when you're doing it out of habit and find out that the pitcher that you just took out has a better history against that particular hitter.

Whatever happened to keeping somebody in because they were pitching well?

Cintron of the D-Backs tries to Cadillac a routine ground ball two plays in a row, two E-6's and two more unearned runs for my Yankees.

Sturtze is looking okay-er.

With that offense, they really just need someone to eat up innings.

Still, it's nice to be able to score eight runs and not breathing heavy.

Thome hits #400 and ties the game in the first inning.

And he'll beat Griffey to 500 the way things are going right now.

As for Herges, presumably the best includes Antonio Alfonseca, Rocky Biddle and Mike Williams. "How to use fancy save totals to disguise the fact that you pitch like a complete piece of crap."

Don't forget Lance Carter and Jose Jiminez

Houston trades Richard Hidalgo to the Mets for David Weathers. Houston is also paying a portion of Hidalgo's contract.

Kinda good trade for the Mets...they don't end up trading any of their prospects and they only trade the over-the-hill Weathers...and they only will pay about $4M of Hidalgo's salary. Also it relegates Garcia and Spencer to the bench where they will be much more useful

Fairly good trade for both clubs. Mets get a right fielder, and they improve their bench. The Astros get some much-needed bullpen help, and they have Jason Lane taking over in right field.

I'm surprised they made the move this quickly. I figured he'd be traded, but they were only talking about Hidalgo as recently as last night and where he could be heading to. I do think it's a good move for both teams, since the Mets need some more offense and the Stros need some bullpen help, as Al said.

I hadn't seen it mentioned but the Royals released Curtis Lescanik. Anybody in desperate need of bullpen help should grab him, or a team may want to sign him to a minor league deal and take a chance on him. When his slider is going he's one of the toughest relievers to hit.

I don't know if you'd be aware of it or not Bruiser, but the Astros have actually been trying to trade Hidaldo for almost 3 years now, ever since he was sub-par in 2001. So I'm not shocked that this deal was done this quickly.

The surprising thing to me is that the Astros only have to eat $4 mil; their share of the money was rumored to be much larger.

Yeah, I know they've been trying to trade him, but I was surprised how quickly it was done once trade talks surfaced this season, since those talks have gone nowhere for almost three years.

Very light rumors that the Yankees might be looking into Guardado.

The major rumor in Cincy is that the Mariners asked for Austin Kearns for Freddy Garcia, money is not the issue as the Reds have been given the okay to spend money if they are in contention. Dan O'brien is trying to decide whether or not to make the deal, one if they are willing to give up Kearns and two if Garcia would make them a contender.

Very promising result today in Colorado. Lowe seems to finally be getting out of a funk (seven shutout innings) and the offense looks to be clicking. These guys should have pounded the hell out of Colorado, so 1 out of 3 is seriously disappointing.

Very Happy with this Hidalgo trade. The Mets need some sort of protection for Piazza and Hidalgo's worth a try.

Yeah...really.

has-been + never-will <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Hidalgo

Kearns is very injury prone...I dont follow the AL so I don't know how well Garcia is doing these days but if he is still decent and good enough...might as well make the trade.

We have other options for outfield anyways.

Cubs are gonna sweep Houston in four for the first time. This is great.

My god they can't ever make it easy. I felt confident going into the 9th, even though the heart of their order was up. When they didn't catch the pop-up from Berkman, I thought to myself "Here we go." When he doubled, things looked like they may be going south, but Hawkins then got two straight outs. With two strikes on Lane, I figured this thing was over. That golf shot homer made my heart sink, but Hawkins was finally able to nail things down. But doesn't seem to matter who's closing, there's always some drama in these Cubs wins. Glad to see them sweep a struggling Houston team. This road trip and their last one is like night and day.

And it should get even better. Sosa's back tomorrow...Woody in a couple of weeks...Grudz and Gonzo shouldn't be too far behind. Perhaps the Cubs are starting to play up to their full potential.

One question: what happens to Glendon Rusch? There's no place for him in the rotation obviously, but will/would he make a good long relief guy? Or do you dangle him as possible trade bait?

Overall, I'm probably as pleased with the Cubs as I have been since the win in Game 5 over the Braves last year.

This just in: Billy Koch has been traded to the Marlins for Wilson Valdez. I believe some cash went Florida's way, as well. White Sox fans will be happy and all six Marlins fans will weep.

I'd keep Rusch in long relief/middle relief to the deadline, and sub him in just in case someone's gotta miss a start. Then trade him away for something...don't we also have Ryan Dempster coming back to be the emergency starter/long relief?

Keep Rusch in for middle relief. As well as he's pitching right now, his career numbers don't justify it, so something's going to give sooner than later. I'm thrilled he's been this effective in Wood's absence, but we need to keep in mind why he's had such trouble staying with one team for too long.
