Golgo 13 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 Yeah, 2 sucked. Wrong. SMB2 wasn't a Mario game at heart, but was still good fun. Elements from 2 began coming into play as early as SMB3, and it's those elements which continue to be associated with Mario today; elements I couldn't imagine him existing without (more enemies, the ability to pick up certain things, better characterization and personalities for characters). Considering the Japanese SMB2 was, more or less, a harder SMB1, I doubt it would have been as important to the overall development of Mario as SMB2 was. chaosrage 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 Where would we be without the walking bombs and the Super Mario Super Show? (Even though it had Bowser instead of Wart) SMB2 was the first one where Mario was short and fat and Luigi was tall and thin. If it wasn't for that game, they might still be twins. I don't think they didn't bring it over here because of the difficulty. This is the NES we're talking about. A lot of NES games were harder than that. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2004 Donkey Kong 94 also borrowed some elements from SMB2--namely the keys and the ability to stand on enemies, hoist them, and throw them/other items at enemies to kill them. Kudos to Fook--I would have had to mention Doki Doki Panic if not for him. http://www.classicgaming.com/tmk/smb2_ddp.shtml http://www.classicgaming.com/tmk/smb2_madness.shtml Info on the original game if you care. "Stranger yet, the POW Block and Starman—two Mario items—were already in DDP. Coupled with the Mario lookalike "Papa" character, it seems as if DDP was planned to be converted into a Mario game from the start... "
chaosrage 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2004 But the papa character wasn't even Mario, it was toad. Here's another one. -SMB2 Shrine: Doki Doki Panic Intro: Super Mario Bros. 2 is one of the finest classics ever released on the NES. With original ideas, smooth game play, facsinating music, you may just think it is an entirely different from any Mario game you have ever played. Well, this is because it originally wasn't a mario game. In Japan, a game called Doki Doki Panic was released in 1987 and after about a year, proved to be successful. well, Nintendo was about to release their version of Super Mario Bros 2 (now known as The Lost Levels), but they realized that the game was extremley similar to the first Mario game they had made, so they decided to scrap it. They did not want to waste money on production for a game that nobody in America would find interest to. So along came the idea to purchase Doki Doki Panic, edit the sprites, objects, and music a bit, and release it as the American version of Super Mario Bros 2. So what you are saying is SMB2 is nothing but a Hacked game?: Precisley. Doki Doki Panic was the exact same game as what we know as Super Mario Bros 2, but with differnt images and sound. The game had 4 differnt arabian heros searching for God knows what, but now you can understand why the hell the game has weird snakes, vases, and sand in it. I might've liked it a bit better had it, while having the Mario tag, been given a alternate title and not the No. 2 billing in the series. It was the downer of the series. chaosrage 0 Report post Posted June 20, 2004 But it helped make Mario! Even Japan I think recognizes it as an official Mario game. They released it back over there as Super Mario USA. SMB2 was the best of the series.

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted June 21, 2004 I've been playing Super Mario All Stars for the SNES (emulator) recently. I think when you compare Super Mario 2 with the Lost Levels version, Super Mario 2 has it beat. The Lost Levels really are just an extension of the original Super Mario Brothers. If you have a GameBoy Advance, they've released SMB3. If you don’t have a GBA, find a GBA emulator on the net (I use VisualBoy Advance). Then it’s just a matter of finding a SMB3 ROM for your emulator (your best luck is probably with mIRC). Personally, I loved SMB2 best of all. For all of you Mario fans, I would also suggest the recently released Mario vs. Donkey Kong. Nifty little puzzle game which I spent most of yesterday playing. And to show how much SMB2 has become part of the franchise, the game includes many elements of SMB2.

I'd stick with my Super Mario World + All Stars cart for now. I liked SMB2 as a fun little diversion, but I don't think it comes anywhere near most of the other entries in the series. Mario vs. DK is a semi-sequel to the 1994 Donkey Kong on GBA, which, yeah, borrowed elements from SMB2.

I'm going to just flat out ask this in case anyone knows the info: to those of you familiar with mIRC, do you know where (server, channel) I can download a WORKING ROM copy of the recently released GBA ports of Super Mario Bros I and Legend of Zelda? I've downloaded ROMs of those two at least a couple times over the past couple weeks, but when I open them in my emulator all it says is "Powerpak On" or some such nonsense. I'm dying to get a working copy of both games.
