NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 Like Funcoland/EB/Video Stoppers/the video game stores in Hollywood videos Seems like it would be a cool job, especially if you like video games, and same goes for video stores, if you are a movie buff. The only problem is, I tend to see a 90% work force of highschoolers which tends to make me lean towards thinking it is a minimum wage job....
Scroby 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 Honestly it all depends. I work for a Gamecrazy (the ones in hollywood videos) and when I first started in Oct of 2002 I was making Minimum wage (6.75 at the time in CA.). I got promoted to a shift leader in a month or less and started making 7.75 a hour. Now I would be making 8.25 by now, but I was suppose to be transferred to a store, there was a screw up and instead of being transferred I had to go back to the store where I was already working plus no rasie. So i'm stuck at 7.75 till a review comes up next year. Its hardly the dream job, espically if its close to a school. I got to deal with kids most of the day and they'll annoy the fuck outta you. Its like they weren't taught any manners. If you got a very high patince for kids, Gamecrazy is a good place to work at. Its a small place, if there's nothing to do and normally there's little things to do, you can play videogames, read, or just hang out plus its easy to get commishion. 4 bucks for every new membership card sold 3 bucks for renewal of a membership 1 buck for a pre-order. If your good enough you can get like 5 in one day. The main issue I have is with the kids. Don't get me wrong their are some very cool ones, but most of the time you wanna throw them all out cause there all punks. Infact now I gotta enforce no more food and drink in the store because the fuckers can't clean up after themselves. Oh and if your applying at the Gamecrazy in Sac or one of them, I know the DM out there. He's pretty cool.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 How much do video game store clerks make? Not enough for their efforts. Kids in those stores suck. Speaking as a former kid who used to go to his friendly neighborhood Funcoland, kids are asses. I never did, but some punks really abuse the test-console privileges. GOOD STORY I was at Sam Goody down at Woodfield one day, and Woodfield more than any other mall seems to have really weird things happen. I'll post those another day, but for now, here's this. So I'm at Sam Goody, browsing the rock section, and back in the video game secdtion I see a few kids playing some X-Box game, I don't remember. Clerk keeps going over there, asking if there's anything he can help with, any games he can direct them to. This goes on intermittently as I go from section to section. So then I go to the back where video games are and look at a strategy guide for a few minutes, same kids, still there. TWENTY MINUTES go by, kids are still there with the clerk periodically coming by. Finally he comes in, I shit you not, with a liter of Coke and a pizza, and says "Here. I made you a pizza while you sit here and play our games for free. Is there anything I can get you guys while you're taking advantage of us?" Kids leave. I tell him nice work. He offers me a slice of pizza. It didn't look like Rosati's or Jake's so I respectfully declined, having just gone to John's Garage earlier. The moral of the story is that kids suck. Scroby 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 You know whats worse than the Kids through? Is there fucking parents dropping them off acting like its a day care center. I had one kid who comes in regulary mom come in and yell at me telling me "He's not allowed in here before 2:15" Like it was my fault and my job to watch him. Then I got other parents asking me if its ok if their kids play games while the parents go shop or something, like I could tell them no its not, get the hell out. Its so bad. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 I couldnt work at a video game store. Im too biased. Of course I'd probably fit in quite well, its just that its more often stores have clerks who push the X Box stuff and not the Gamecube stuff, which is what I'd end up doing. The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 So he ordered a "Liter-a-cola" !! I don't get it. Anyway, here's another story from Woodfield. My dad and I are standing in Lord & Taylor waiting for my mom and sister to get back so we can go to lunch. Suddenly this middle-aged black woman BURSTS from the dressing room yelling "Security! Security! I need some security! That woman just stole my purse! She reached under the door and took it!" Then this little older black woman with fire-engine red hair emerges, and declares this to a crowd of shocked Schaumburg shoppers and staff: "I didn't steal NOTHIN from NOBODY!" And she proceeds to run like she's got a hot poker up her ass out of the department store and into the general mall. The victim is frenetic. The staff members STAND THERE. They just watch her run out and don't pursue her at all! Now this woman has obviously lost her purse. Guy 1: "So...she had red hair." Guy 2: "...Yeeeeeeeah." Guy 3: "Um, should we call security?" Guy 1: "...you know what, we should." Lady: "That woman has my purse! She just took it and left! Can't you find her?" Guy 2: "We'll try our best." Me: "Excuse me sir, is there anything I can do to help?" Guy 1: "....I don't think there's anything that any of us can do." -- I've heard of the bystander effect but this is ridiculous. But also funny for the guy, exhaling and delivering that line like it was so dramatic. Had to be there to get the true experience.

Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted June 17, 2004 Pushing the X Box would be a wise business decision, because most consumers blow their load over it. But my preferred order would be something like: 1. PS2 2. Super NES 3. X Box 4. Sega Master System II 5. NES 6. Sega MegaDrive 7. PlayStation 8. GameCube 9. Nintendo 64 I'm sure nostalgia is a factor in determining that list too.

The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 I could've bought a Dreamcast for $20 at a garage sale one day when I was jogging through my cousin's neighborhood which happened to be having garage sales that day. I would've, but I didn't have the money on me, and there's not enough space anyway. Besides what good is a Dreamcast without Virtua Tennis?
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 plus its easy to get commishion. Well that explains a lot of things -- I'm so sick of getting pimped all those things whenever I go to one of those stores that I've stopped and go to Best Buy, where I only get pimped free issues of Entertainment Weekley. The main issue I have is with the kids. Don't get me wrong their are some very cool ones No they're not, and it's interesting to see where parents drop off their brats now that most arcades in malls have gone out of business... Don't get me wrong their are some very cool ones No they're not, and it's interesting to see where parents drop off their brats now that most arcades in malls have gone out of business... They'll just feed them some cash and drop them off at the mall itself to do whatever. Yeah, I've noticed that about arcades too... Even with new and advanced consoles being released, it's still a nice atmosphere and contains some classics. Oh, and the prizes!
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 I've worked at two arcades in my life, and one was at a mall. The mall HATED our store because that's where all the mallrats/burnouts hung out -- years after I left that place they closed down...
Guest I Got Banned for Sucking Report post Posted June 17, 2004 They hung out at Replay too... As well as the cinema, inside and outside... City Beach... Coles... Sanity... IN2 Music... Bocoo... In fact, Replay wasn't that big of a draw for them at all. And what sucks is that I still have about a 5-inch high pile of tickets from that place that were never used. kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 Well we were also nest to the mall enterance (we had an entrance door in our store as well) and that's where they all went out to smoke, which was another factor...

The mall HATED our store because that's where all the mallrats/burnouts hung out -- years after I left that place they closed down... We had a mid-town mall which was actually underground. Best way to describe it was like a subway mall. In that mall there was an arcade and more often than not there's where gang members would end up getting killed. You could literally run in one way, run past the arcade and shoot it up, keep on going and leave the mall. I walked in and saw bullet holes all in the top of the skee-ball machine and the pinball machine for Last Action Hero, along with the glass see through walls between the actual arcade and the mall corridor. I decided it probably wasn't a good place to go for my arcade needs.

Guest Cerebus Report post Posted June 17, 2004 I had the same deal working at Barns and Nobles last week. I worked first shift and around 930 am this polite kid (maybe 8 or 9) asked me where the comics were so I pointed them out to him. When I was ready to punch out at 4pm the kid was still in a chair reading a Calvin and Hobbes book. I asked him if he came back from before and he said he had been there all day while his mom went to work at the Stop and Shop around the corner.

It's not his fault...his mom just sent him there. Number B: It's Barnes & Noble. My philosophy is that as long as I buy something in the end, I can sit in the big comfy chairs and read as many books as I want. The public library in my town is SHIT. My high school's library hardly had any books. I've had to turn to the private sector for literary enrichment, and I feel both sides are winning.
