Guest The Winter Of My Discontent

Widescreen/Fullscreen

Last year or the year before I got Star Wars: Attack of The Clones for Christmas. I asked if they made sure to grab a widescreen and I was assured it was widescreen. For some reason I never bothered looking at the front cover until after I opened it.

It was fucking widescreen and I was pissed about not checking it myself before opening it. I was so disgusted by it all, that I didn't see the movie until it came on HBO about 4 months later. I still haven't seen the movie in the proper aspect ratio.

That's the only time I was screwed like that, but it's not my only "I'm such an idiot" incident with DVDs. My worse incident would have to be when I mistakenly bought the remake of Psycho instead of the original. What makes it even worse is the fact that I didn't discover the mistake until several months later. So who can top that?

Why are full screen's made?

For soccer moms, old people and people who don't understand what widescreen is.

Bingo. My future mother-in-law thinks WS DVD's are a Communist plot. We got her her first DVD player for Mother's Day and I'm giving her several DVD's that I have which I'm upgrading to "special" editions (ie. Seven, Glory, Copland, etc...)

Some don't consider certain DVDs to be worthy enough of widescreen, as they don't expect it to sell well, it's low-budget, etc.

I hate it when people think that they're missing out when they watch widescreen - the picture obviously has to be compressed at top and bottom for it to work. And besides, the black bars now add to creating that true cinematic experience.

i hate when i actually have to phsyically SHOW people the difference between wide and full...they just insist that the movie sucks because of those "stupid black bars at the top and bottom"...damn ingrates...

My deal is though I don't think I'd ever buy a Widescreen TV because most TV shows are Fullscreen and I hate watching TV all stretched out on a Widescreen TV.

I think fullscreen on widescreen tvs just have black bars on the sides. I don't believe there's any stretching involved.

If you choose the setting with the bars on the side....but sometimes the bars on the sides are colored and have writing on it (like the name of the channel)...quite distracting.

Plus, she stopped watching most of the NBC shows that do their shows in psuedo widescreen because of the black bars (even though on my 27 inch TV they are like less than an inch high and I think she has the same size TV as I do).

It's not a pseudo-widescreen - ER *IS* shot in widescreen, as is Enterprise.

Oddly enough, the "widescreen" presentations of Justice League *ARE* pseudo-widescreen, with the top and bottom parts lopped off.

I hate Fullscreen. I like seeing the whole picture the way it was meant to be.

Amen.

Most TV's nowadays give you choices:

* Just stretch it out left and right. This is what you're talking about, it makes everyone look fat, and it just doesn't look good. The main reason for this mode is to stretch out widescreen images sent over a regular signal. Most Xbox games on a widescreen TV first appear as a really skinny and ugly looking full-screen image until you use the stretch mode, and then they look as they should.

* Zoom into the center, and lose space on the top and the bottom until the sides fill the TV. A decent enough mode for CNN and other channels (you can actually eradicate those scrolling newsticker bars at the bottom of the screen. Bwahaha, YES!) but not all that useful.

* Some TVs have a mode that zooms in a little bit and then stretches things just a little bit on the sides. This does a VERY good job of making the room fill the picture and look like it was made for widescreen, while still keeping what the camera is focused on at the proper size.

My DVD player gives the option of making widescreen and I am sure most others do the same, seeing how mine is pretty old.

When TNT shows Angel, they show it in fullscreen. The fullscreen ruins it because half of the time, people are out of frame.

That is one of the two problems with fullscreen. The other is the addition of awkward camera moves to cover up for that which break up the flow of the film.

Yeah, I fucking know what you mean.

Going up to the television and showing how compression, etc. works with your hands?

And they still don't get the message!

Everyone with a DVD player that I'm in close contact with, accepts widescreen.

I could really care less.

I'd really hate being all fuckin anal retentive because I couldn't see a house plant to the far left of the shot as opposed to having the picture shrink on a smaller TV because of the bars.

My grandmother had a 13-15 inch TV when I was occasionally staying there the last 6 months I was in LA and it was real difficult to sit at a comfortable distance and see the movie since everything was smaller.

Widescreen is good for larger TV's, fullscreen is good for smaller TV's, it's as simple as that. Yes you may miss little things when it goes pan and scan, but what the camera is focusing on is the important thing, otherwise movies wouldn't be released in fullscreen at all.

I have no problem seeing the movie in widescreen on my small TV and I have bad eyesight. I just don't like Fullscreen.

The best example (or worst) of a bad fullscreen transfer is whenever Ghostbusters is shown on TV and they have to pan and scan across the picture. Everything gets blurry and you can tell it's not supposed to be doing that.

We're not being anal retentive, so fuck off with that shite

Maybe not, but I'd consider it bitchy if someone started whining because they only came out with a fullscreen version instead of their beloved widescreen, god forbid.

It's the same fucking movie. I'd like evidence that you'd miss something really important or worthwhile to the movie by having the sides cut off. I know, widescreen is preferable, widescreen is awesome, I realize this and I watch widescreen instead of fullscreen myself, but I'm not going to throw a shitfit if I don't get a movie in widescreen.

I'll admit to being anal-retentive.

I'll also admit to wanting to actually see the entire picture, as intended.

:( I'm one of those peoples lol. I dunno, it's just something about...TV is fullscreen, that's the way it looks as if it should be seen. Wanna see it widescreen see it at teh movies...after this topic I might start watching in Widescreen more just to see if I feel any different. But for some reason I just like fullscreen better.

I wish people who just didn't understand this would just keep shut on the topic, I really do.

Then what would be the point in that? You'd have a message board with a bunch of topics where all people did was agree with each other...

He feels different, so what?

If you don't understand something, and are just talking out of your ass, it's best to just keep your mouth shut. It's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of understanding what you are talking about.

That's what.

I *do* understand, I just don't see the point in throwing a shitfit over getting fullscreen instead of widescreen. You're still seeing the fucking movie, albeit maybe not as originally intended, but you still see the focus of the picture.

With all that said... I still prefer widescreen, it's not like I don't know the difference it's just that I don't care as much.

If you either do not care about film enough or just do not understand just how much of a difference and how important it can be to see the film as it was intended to be viewed, then we might as well just stop this right now.

Of course I know. I'm not going to repeat myself again, however.

But in any case, then how long will it be until eventually everyone catches on that fullscreen is pointless?

If you've never really seen widescreen and enjoyed it, then watching full-screen won't bother you. But if you have, especially if you're an enthusiast, you're going to grow frustrated at 4:3.

Each to their own.
