When Mueller and Burks come back(should be soon since they're in Pawtucket right now) Red Sox need to trade Nomar for starting pitching and then go about trading Kim(who's actually pitching fairly good in Triple-A right now) along with a mid-level prospect for a first baseman.

I really hope the players get as pissed off over this loss as the fans will. I don't want Francona going on the radio and saying "Oh well, Ortiz just had a bad night, we'll get em' tomorrow with Kevin Millar batting in the cleanup spot."

a) if last night didn't fire them up, this won't

b) Be fair to ortiz. the ball literally broke his glove. Not much you can do there.

Babe

Bucky

Buckner

Boone

Big Fatass* David Ortiz.

*"Fat" can be replaced with "scary"

Okay, I don't really mean it, but Kay mentioned something.

What a game! Heredia's "save", Sheff's battle, and the Sandman putting them to sleep.

Gotta love it!

I have to figure seeing the ball go past Ortiz would for Cubs fans be the equivalent of the whole team falling apart over something completely inconsequential and an error by our best defensive player for no reason. Whenever I see Boone, Buckner, or Bartman in a video clip I close my eyes and cover my ears.

How do they do that.

There are alot of ghosts in Yankee Stadium.

Ghosts of a lot of men who didn't particularly like the Red Sox.

So the AL East is all but settled right now, unless the team as a whole gets off it's ass and realizes it is underachieving badly right now.

And I now agree with FS: trade Nomar by the end of the month. He doesn't want to be here? Fuck him.

*Sigh* when does NFL training camp start?

It's not over yet.

And even if the East is, the Sox have a very viable alternative.

It's funny, I thought Manny would be the one to sulk about the Sox trying to move him but it's been the complete opposite. Never thought Nomar would give up on the team.

Two or three different sources are now saying Nomar will be gone by the trade deadline. Evidently he's been blaming others in the locker room, doesn't want to be around his teamates and is overall causing problems. Old man Gammons says Nomar hasn't only drawn the ire of ownership but also his teamates with his recent attitude.

Right now I wouldn't be surprised to see Nomar, Kentucky Fried Kevin Millar, and Kim involved in trade talks.

Infact, if Baltimore wants Ramiro Mendoza then they can give us Palmeiro. That solves first base.

I never thought Nomar would be like that, he's always seemed like a great team guy. I read a lot about how Ted Williams' death messed with his head, and he's obviously bitter about the Red Sox trying to trade him and upgrade at SS with A-Rod, but is it also possible that "the curse" has gotten to him? :P

I'd like Kevin "Hick" Millar gone. Guy can't play defense to save his life.

Nomar is their biggest trade chip. They have to make a deal that will bring them a legit player. Let's not forget that brilliant 'Freddy Sanchez for Jeff Suppan' deal last year that made me lose faith in humanity.

BK Kim can go fuck off to any team. I don't care either way. Everytime he plays for the Red Sox, it seems that he's earning his master's degree at the John Wasdin School of Blown Saves.

I hope OMGammons is right and that Nomar is gone.

I thought part of the Red Sox organizational philosophy is that defense doesn't really matter.

That's part of the so-called Moneyball philosophy, and its often misunderstood. Its not that defense is negligible. Its that defense can be measureable, and is often overstated. When a coach says "Player X saves 100 runs with his glove every year," that's an exaggeration.

Didn't he flip the bird to the home crowd once last year when he was getting booed?

I don't think you can overstate the value of defense.

Baseball is one part hitting, one part pitching, one part fielding.

Shoddy play in any of the three shoots the game to hell.

Brad Ausmus. Doug Glanville. These are guys trumped as great defensive players, which they are, but their truly appalling offensive numbers more than negate their defensive value.

And there are plenty of good offensive players that are liabilities on the field.

Yes, but not so much that they are a net liability to their team. Mike Piazza is not a good catcher, but his offensive abilities offset that. Same with Derek Jeter. And there is nothing wrong with a good gloveman if he can hit a little. Ozzie Smith was good enough with the bat to make his glove worthwhile. But when you hit as bad as Brad Ausmus, you hurt your team.

That would be even more profoundly stupid than trading a good prospect for a washed-up never-was middle reliever. What kind of a team would make THAT deal?

Oh, right...

As bad as Ortiz's fielding is, I think the fact that he is a a mothafucking RBI machine makes up for it. Here's how I'd have the Red Sox line up,

Edit: In no particular order

1B-Mark Bellhorn (He's been learning 1B, might as well give him the nod. What's the other option? Dave McCarty?)

2B-Pokey

SS-Nomar (Until traded)

3B- Bill Mueller (Youkillis in the mean time)

LF- I really don't know. Kapler?

CF-Damon

RF-Manny

DH-Papi

I think the Sox should trade Nomar for Edgar Renteria straight up. It sounds like a trade stupid enough to work.
