Old School thrash metal

I figured i'd start this post to see if there's anyone else who loves the classic old school thrash.

I'm wondering though, a lot of younger people now seem to be getting into some of the newer metal bands like Killswitch Engage, Chimaira and Shadows Fall, through these bands, could people get into some of the older bands like Anthrax or Exodus?

First of all, take Chimaira out, and put in In Flames.

 

First off, the obvious pinnicle band that really start thrash off is Metallica, and basically everyone has heard of Metallica, and many love their old stuff.

 

Then Slayer. Slayer is probably the most conistant thrash band in the 80's. Definite albums by them are Raining Blood, Hell Awaits, Show No Mercy, South of Heaven and Seasons of the Abyss. Their 90's stuff is alright, but I really don't know too much about that.

 

Megadeth, the third band, is probably the best thrash metal band period, and probably the best metal acts out there. Everything they have release minus Risk is solid material. Hanger 18 is the ultimate metal song.

 

Anthrax, I'm not too sure about, I do listen to them, but I never really follow them that much. Check out Indians, Room For One More, Bring The Noise, Caught In A Mosh, Armed And Dangerous.

 

Armored Saint: Not many have heard of them, in the early 80's, with lead singer John Bosh, who later became singer for Anthrax. If you can find material from their first album, its completly different from their second album, not as polished.

 

Exodus is a terrific band, start by listening to these albums. Bonded by Blood, or Fabulous Disaster, great guitar work.

 

Mercyful Fate: Now I don't know you'll like the band, because of King Diamond howling vocals. The guitar work is simply amazing, especially picking up Melissa and Don't Break The Oath, this is the best stuff, but their 90's material are hit an miss.

 

Motorhead: Get every song possible. Lemmy is your god.

 

Testament: Another solid band, with great guitar work by Skolnik, the underrated thrash metal band in the 80's. DNR, Practice What You Preach, Murky Waters are my favourite songs by them.

 

one band to stay away from is Overkill. Horrible band overall, that somehow manage people to like about them, with horrible vocals.

Well, I said Anthrax because they've been consistently very good for the last 15-20 years, while Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth have varied in quality. It's a shame that not many people really know about albums like Stomp 442 and Volume 8.. as they are great albums.

As for your list, great selection, pretty close to my own choices with a one exception, being Mercyful Fate, I could never get into them at all, if anything i'd rather Venom but that's me i'spose. I agree however with you on Armored Saint, the most under rated band of the last 20 years, John Bush has the most amazing voice.

One band i'll highly recommend if anyone can find their CD, is an Australian band called Allegiance, they put out a couple of albums in the mid 90's, their best being the awesome "Destitution" which came out in '94.

I recommend Death Angel. Saw those guys a week ago at a festival and although a lot of people didn´t know them they stole the show, not even Testament or Iced Earth were cheered that much

Overkill is an entry metal band. It's entertaining, but should always be followed up with something harder and better.

When listing oldschool thrash bands you must not leave out Sodom or Kreator.

 

 

Sodom - German thrash Gods, also influenced a lot of black metal with their earlier albums. Pick up "In The Sign of Evil", "Obsessed By Cruelty", "Persecution Mania", "Mortal Way Of Live", "Agent Orange", "Better Off Dead". I love their whole discography.

 

Kreator is another great German thrash band. Get "Endless Pain", "Extreme Aggression", "Terrible Certainty", "Pleasure To Kill", "Coma of Souls" and their double-disc live album "Live Kreation". Stay away from 90s Kreator.

Tankard: "Zombie Attack" and "Chemical Invasion"

Annihilator "Alice in Hell"

Agony "The First Defiance"

Infernal Majesty "None Shall Defy"

Coroner "Death Cult" demo with Tom G. Warrior on vocals

Hobbs Angel of Death "Hobbs Angel of Death"

Destruction: "Infernal Overkill" and "Eternal Devastation"

Dark Angel "Leave Scars"

 

Also, Megadeth is far from the best thrash band. They had a few good thrash albums, the rest is decent or shitty.
