July 7, 2004— Three bodies were found at a New Mexico ranch owned by ABC newsman Sam Donaldson, and authorities said they were treating the deaths as homicides.

The bodies of a male and two females were found Tuesday on Donaldson's remote ranch north of Hondo, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department said.

"My wife Jan and I are shocked by the apparent triple homicide that took place on our ranch in Hondo, New Mexico, sometime over the Fourth of July weekend while we were away in Santa Fe," Donaldson said in a statement. "We understand the investigation is continuing, and we have been asked by authorities not to comment further at this time."

Donaldson called authorities after he went to the house of his ranch manager and found an "obvious crime scene," Sheriff Tom Sullivan said.

Sheriff's deputies sent to the ranch searched the area and found the bodies. The victims' identities were being withheld pending notification of relatives.

Donaldson is not a suspect, Sullivan said.

Donaldson's ranch is in the south-central part of the state, between Roswell and Ruidoso.

Am I the only one thinking that he should report his own story on the news and then interview himself on the matter?

You kidding?

I'd pay money to see him do it.

I'd watch, especially if they have him run back and forth between two chairs as the camera slowly pans.

Stories like this suck, because they never end up with the discovery of gross conspiracy and pure evil we've "grown" to expect.

I like how he threw in his alibi in the first sentence. Seems fishy to me  .

2Gold, that was freakin' hilarious.

If he'd berate himself for ducking the issue, he'd become my new hero.

This is shocking.

I always pictured Peter Jennings as a serial murderer, not Donaldson.

I actually saw Willard Scott as one. He was too damned jolly to be normal.

Well a 14 year old boy has been arrested and charged with killing his father (the manager of Sam Donaldson's ranch), step mother and step sister. What a bizzare story.

Teen Arrested in Triple Homicide at ABC Newsman's Ranch

Wednesday, July 07, 2004

HONDO, N.M. — A 14-year-old boy was charged with killing his family a day after their bodies were found on a ranch owned by Sam Donaldson (search).

The teen, accused of slaying his father, stepmother and stepsister on the ABC newsman's property, was arrested on Wednesday at a friend's home in the Hondo (search) area around 5 p.m., Lincoln County Sheriff Tom Sullivan said.

The bodies were found at the ranch in south-central New Mexico (search) after Donaldson went to the manager's house on Tuesday and discovered an "obvious crime scene," Sullivan said. Deputies searched the area and found the three bodies in a shallow grave. No other details of the slayings were released.

The dead were identified as ranch manager Delbert Paul Posey, the teen's father; stepsister Mary Lee Schmid, 14; and stepmother Tryone Posey.

The teen was detained on three counts of murder and four counts of tampering with evidence. An initial court appearance was scheduled for Thursday, Sullivan said.

In a prepared statement, Donaldson said he and his wife, Jan, hired Paul Posey to work at the ranch in October 2001. "Jan and I are so very, very sorry about the loss of these fine people," he said.

The Donaldsons were in Santa Fe in northern New Mexico during the Fourth of July weekend, when the slayings apparently occurred.

"We didn't see them Tuesday morning or Tuesday afternoon, so I went over — and on the porch was a large stain that was instantly recognizable," Donaldson told Albuquerque television station KOB-TV. He then called the sheriff's office.

Donaldson described the teen as "withdrawn, like any typical teenager."

Donaldson's Lincoln County ranch is in rolling pastureland about 125 miles northeast of Las Cruces.

Donaldson, a journalist with ABC since 1967, owns three ranches in south-central New Mexico and has extensive ties to the state. He grew up on a cotton farm in New Mexico and graduated from New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

He should have planted a black toupe' on the crime scene along with a photo of David Letterman with devil horns and devil goatee drawn on it with a black sharpee.
