AIR - Talkie Walkie. No one else on this board probably likes it, but I did. A lot.

Good album, but for some reason I got bored of it after a month.

In no particular order:

Madvillain: Madvillainy

Adam Green: Friends Of Mine

Ikara Colt: Modern Apprentice

Animal Collective: Sung Tongs

Probably some other stuff I can't remember too.

Interpol- Antics

The pressure was obviously there for Interpol to follow up Turn on The Bright Lights with an equally impressive sophmore record. I'd say that they succeeded. Is it better then TOTBL? I'm not sure yet. At first listen you can tell right away that this record is a very different one, vocally, lyrically, musically. Lead singer Sam Fogarino's vocals improve a great deal from the previous album and he has shed a lot of the Ian Curtis-lite comparisons that were made.

Musically it's a very diverse album. It can go from new wave pop-ish stuff ("Slow Hands") to the bleak and dreary guitar rock of "A time to be so small". The only track that I'm not totally feelin' is "Length of Love" which is too monotonus to ever take any kind of shape. The standout track in my mind is "Take You on A Cruise" which features a chorus of Sam and lead guitarist Daniel Kessler playing off each others vocals and it sounds choice.

I'm not sure what this will do for the band, exposure wise. Rock is coming back in a really big way and they might just turn some heads, especially with their main stage billing on The Cure's Curiosa Festival.

****3/4

Well, for albums that are upcoming, the big three in question for me are Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, and Sparta. I'm eager to see how they all can follow up albums that were great in their own rights.

From what I've heard this year, though....well, the only 'new' album I've heard this year is Modest Mouse, and I'm not entirely sure that actually came out this year. So I cant say.

Incubus - A Crow Left Of The Murder

UGH. I disagree.

Make Yourself was the last great Incubus record.

I vote for Velvet Revolver.

DEP's new vocalist is incredible live, I can't imagine why the new album would be any different. The new tracks they played when I saw them live sounded very tight.

They were a little too drunk on this cd, and not quite stoned enough, I don't think. This album is intended for the beers you don't really remember drinking, and that's about it.

I totally agree. There's some good stuff on the album, and it does feature Neil Fallon's best lyric EVER with Please allow me to adjust my pants/So that I may dance the good-time dance. Clutch is still always good though, with the self-titled being the best album.

I'm going to get flamed for this, but The Polyphonic Spree's "Together We're Heavy" is worth mentioning, even if it's probably not the album of the year. Other than that, I can't think of much that I bought this year. I suppose my pick would be Weezer's "Blue Album Deluxe Edition" but that should technically be eliminated from running.

How do you live your life not thinking that Elephant Riders is the best one?

I'd also like to add that the new Iced Earth album makes me vomit more bile than their previous ones, and due to its existence, Iced Earth is another band I cannot listen to. Patriotic thrashy power metal? Give me a break.

It's tough, but somehow I manage. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE The Elephant Riders, but the self-titled just seems like the perfect stoner rock album. It's got everything you need for a high ride, or just bong smoking in your basement. Elephant Riders seems a bit over-produced at times, whereas the self-titled is nice and raw, though not at the level of grit that is The Transitional Speedway League.

Plus, can you really ever go wrong with "Spacegrass", "I Have Discovered the Body of John Wilkes Booth" and "Animal Farm?"

I think I like it more partly due to the Civil War theme, and the jangly grass-rootsy kind of vibe, before the sleepy horns hit.

I've just remembered another album that's a gargantuan "?" in my mind.

Colonel Les Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains. September 21st. We'll have to see once that time comes around.

I'm curious about that one myself. Les has gotten all progressive lately, and this is supposedly something much different, which is exactly what he needs right now. It'll make the next Frog Brigade or Primus release seem more fresh.

I just picked up The Hives--Tyrannosaurus Hives and it's pretty damn good. It's like their fellow classmates, The Strokes' second album: similar to the first, but with more polished production and better all around.

Franz Fernidad: Franz Fernidad

Ladies and gentlemen: Franz Ferdinand's fans don't even know what they are called. That is beautiful.

Would they at least get the reference to the ill-fated figure?

By the way, how is that album?

This new Fiery Furnaces album, Blueberry Boat, is pretty wonderful. Need to listen to it more before I can call it "album of the year thus far" or whatever, but yeah.

It took awhile for it to sink in, but I'm putting Animal Collective's Sung Tongs up at the top, too.

I like it. It's not earth-shattering, but I find it very charming and a really easy summer listen. It's got an odd sort of baroque-Strokes feel, for better and for worse. Standout tracks are probably "Jacqueline," "40'," and "Darts of Pleasure." I picked it up for $8, and I feel like that's about what it's worth.

It's still sinking for me. Moments are great and a lot of the harmonies are wonderful, but in its entirety I'm finding it a bit too twee.

I just realized I haven't bought a 2004 release yet except for Ms. Minogue's (superb) album, but I consider that more 2003 since that's when it was released just about everywhere else.

I need to listen to more of these people you folks are always talking about in this folder. I exist in a strange bubble of Spoony taste.

I'd go with Modest Mouse's Good New For People Who Love Bad News. All of their other albums are great too. I also liked Franz Ferdinand's ( I think it's a reference to Archduke Ferdinand)album, the Cure's, and the Pixies' hits compilation.

Until that arrives my top 3 reads:

Morrissey - You Are the Quarry

The Hives - Tyrannosauros Hives (not a comedy band, mind you)

Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose
