EdwardKnoxII 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2004 http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/a...health_aids_mtv MTV chief says Bush AIDS policies will not halt condom adverts BANGKOK (AFP) - The president of cable music giant MTV vowed not to stop the channel's hard-hitting AIDS (news - web sites) and condom messages despite the US government promoting a sexual abstinence programme to counter the pandemic. "We get criticised quite a bit, we even get penalised quite a bit and I am here to see that we will continue to take those risks," said Bill Roedy, at the 15th International AIDS Conference in Bangkok, where the debate between strict sexual abstinence versus a pro-condom approach has emerged as a key issue. Roedy said MTV's no-nonsense specials on AIDS and condom use had also found the televised music giant in hot water in many countries outside the United States. The MTV president sat on a panel with Hollywood icon Richard Gere, who joined Roedy in criticising the approach of President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s administration to condom and AIDS awareness. "We may well have hopefully another administration in about four months in the US and along with that some sanity on this subject," said Gere. An adviser on women's issues to the United Nations (news - web sites) on Friday partially blamed a rising AIDS rate among women in the US on popular media such as MTV. "Among young people in America, there is a feeling that sex is cool, that it's okay to be growing up and to be sexually experienced," said Stephanie Urdang. The number of American women with HIV (news - web sites)/AIDS leapt from 180,000 in 2001 to 240,000 two years later, she said.

Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted July 14, 2004 What a dumb fuck this guy is....... condoms are highly ineffective as far as protecting you from AIDS. The virus is small enough to fit through holes in the material and if it breaks you're totally fucked. MTV look like a bunch of ingorant fools here.
spiny norman 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2004 Not to be rude, but you are the one who is an ignorant fool. It's the 21st century, that's an old wife's tale. Teach someone to use a condom correctly rather than teaching them to abstain from sex.

Umm No. Condoms greatly reduce your chance of getting HIV/AIDS, that is a FACT that cannot be disputed. Of course they aren't full proof, but no Condom manufacturer ever claimed they were. I think it is something in the low 90%'s that yer chances of contracting AIDS gets reduced when using a condom PROPERLY. The problem teens run into is that they think Condoms are ALSO for birth control which is not the case. Condoms are made to reduce your chance of getting an STD, however they do reduce the chance of pregnancy as a bi-product of the mechanics, however that is not what they are designed for. That is why the girl should also be on some type of birth control even if the male uses a condom everytime. Promoting an Abstinence ONLY message is not only unrealistic, but is borderline irresponsible, considering the mixed messages young folks are BOMBARDED with today. I mean what will have more impact, a two hour Sex-Ed class, or sixteen years of desensitised sexuality via mainstream media?
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted July 14, 2004 It's still a total crap shoot as far as getting or not getting it. 90% isn't shit for chances, it's completely unacceptable as far as any kind of accuracy goes. MTV's ignorance is they act like a condom is the be all end all of preventing AIDs. It's not. Abstinence isn't an option for everyone but you have to have it as part of the message. It's not so hard to say "hey if you don't want to run a great risk of having AIDS then don't have sex and don't use used needles." Not a hard message to get out there. Sending kids out there thinking wearing a condom is going to do a damned thing to prevent getting AIDs is just going to cause more people to get infected with it. Again 90% effectiveness isn't shit. A scientist would laugh at you with those kinds of numbers. And anyways this all gets negated because most people don't understand they can catch STDs through oral sex. spiny norman 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2004 But to teach someone to effectively use a condom so as to make it as difficult as possible to contract the disease is going to be a better cause of prevention. Yes, you can promote absitence all you want but the fact of the matter is that a huge amount of people will ignore this. Yes, some people will not have sex because of this, but more than likely the large majority will not be affected in their sexual behaviour. Thus it is more logical to teach them to use a condom correctly. If they don't use the condom correctly the chances of contracting the disease is much higher than if they don't use the condom correctly. Thus promotion of the use of condoms and safe sex makes sense in trying to prevent AIDS. It is amazingly closeminded and naive to think otherwise.
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted July 14, 2004 Again though, they go about it like idiots. Too many people think wearing a condom is the be all end all of protection. They need to make it clear that having sex with multiple partners runs you a great risk of contacting a disease no matter what. 10% is a high probability of failure. Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2004 Condoms aren't perfect, but it's what's around. Development of all things takes time. Could you imagine similar levels of protection available 30, 40 years ago? Hah. Good thing we didn't have similar outbreaks going on back then, especially in the late 60s with all that free love and sex orgy shit. That said, promoting nothing but abstinence is one of the dumbest Bush administration policies. So dumb that I don't even argue with conservatives about it because we all wind up agreeing. Abstinence-only education only makes people dumber and more ignorant about sex because they know nothing, and will only cause us more similar problems in the future. spiny norman 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2004 It's a bit less than 10%, but nevermind. It is impossible to control how often people have sex. I would say that a resounding majority of the population know that if you have sex more often with more sexual partners you are more susceptible to getting an STD. But I think if they are aware of how to properly use a condom it will be a good cause of prevention of gaining a disease. It is not always the case. But 90-95% of people are going to be prevented from getting AIDS. It is an obvious way to help prevent the spread of the disease. It will not prevent it altogether, but to teach one about how to practice safe sex is a more reasonable option than to tell them to remain abstinent.
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted July 14, 2004 And like I said, most of this gets negated because a lot of people don't understand that oral sex can transfer diseases as well.

spiny norman 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2004 But people have known AIDS could be prevented by not having sex for years and it hasn't stopped them from going at it like rabbits. I think you would be silly to think that by letting people know that no sex equals no AIDS would make for a working method to prevent its spread. Yes, people should be told to exercise caution, but, as JOTW said, for it to be the sole prevention promoted is an unwise action.
Guest Van Mundegaarde Report post Posted July 14, 2004 I try very hard to resist the urge to slap the shit out of people who argue the importance teaching proper condom use by saying that the AIDS virus is small enough to penetrate the tiny holes in a condom. While this may be true, it's not like when a guy ejaculates he shoots out pure HIV. The virus is attached to semen which IS, on average, too large to slip through the holes in a condom. Therefore, using fundamental problem solving, you can conclude that if the courier isn't getting through the condom, the virus isn't either. Sorry to be so abrasive and blunt but that particular defense against "safe sex education" is so ill-conceived and so widely used that it makes the space between my eyes hurt every time I hear it. bobobrazil1984 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2004 telling people not to have sex = make people want to have sex more. especially in teens. Pretty much the only way to get abstinence to work would be to inject them with special chemicals that make everybody impotent. getting boners and wet pussies will make teenagers hump like crazy. Hell, a number of the people promoting abstinence had/have no problem fucking wildly using a condom!
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2004 I don't think ANY sex ed class/commercial/MTV ad has presented condoms as the "end all, be all" All they do is include, "greatly reduces your chance" which is A FACT, and on top of that, most of the commercials indeed start out with the statement: "Abstinence is the only sure way blah blah....." God damn it would be amazingly great if parents were responsible for their children... ...hey wait a minute! Now lets all steer this to Movies and Video Games killing people! Sounds rather silly of the GuvMent to reccomend "No sex!" to a bunch of people who are genetically wired to sex the next thing that kinda looks like a hole and scream "I'd hit it!" in online forums at the drop of a hat. Guest combat_rock Report post Posted July 16, 2004 See, if MTV and the rest of the "condom" crowd weren't already informing people that condoms aren't 100% effective and that abstinence is, then maybe the abstinence preachers would have a point. I mean, if they're saying abstinence is the only guarenteed way to keep from getting AIDS, but if you are going to have sex it's better to use a condom, isn't that the truth? My god, I might actually have to respect MTV.
