Books you can read over and over again....

There's really only one book that I've been able to read through more than once, which is kinda weird because I have no problem rewatching movies and stuff, and that book is Catcher in the Rye.

One book I think is worth another look is Batman: The Killing Joke. It really is one of the best stories ever dealing with the Joker as it shows us the man's crooked soul and what eats at it's core.

Just about anything by Bukowski ... I can just re-read his short stories again & again. If I had to pick one in particular, it'd be Notes of a Dirty Old Man. I've probably read that book 10-15 times, and the better short stories have been read more than the rest.

And them there's Joyce's Ulysses; I've only read the whole thing once, but I can open up to any of the episodes and read one section again at any given time.

i second this. i've read it four times since i was seventeen, and although the flaws become more and more apparent with each reading, it never ceases to amaze me & my outlook of it changes just a little bit every time. i can't take it in small doses: once it gets rolling i spend every spare second reading it, and it usually takes a solid month to stop thinking about it once i finish it.

It seems strange to me that Starship Troopers gets mentioned repeatedly, but Heinlein's finest work, Stranger in a Strange Lan remains unmentioned. I've read it at least 4 times.

 

And Speaker of the Dead is superior to Ender's Game, though a much tougher read.

 

And Neverwhere's my favorite Gaiman work. I've read it three times, while I've only covered the others twice.

 

And I need to throw out the poetry of Allen Ginsberg and the writings of William Burroughs and jack Kerouac for their re-readability, although you generally need to read them twice just to figure them out...

I mentioned Starship Troopers, but I've never read Stranger in a Strange Land. Why? Beats me. It's been on a "must-read" list for me for years, I just never got around to picking up a paperback. Maybe I'll run out and grab it after I'm done reading the book I'm on now.

I think the main reason it doesn't get as much appreciation is because it's so different from Ender's Game - people read Ender's Game, like it, then go to read the second and are all like "the hell?"

 

That happened to me anyway - I still like the book, it's just pretty different.
