The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2004 Mariotti is the best thing ATH has going. How anyone who writes for the Chicago Sun-Times can have such an ego is beyond me, but hey, whatever. It's not just him, Roger Ebert works there, too. Maybe you were being sarcastic? Eh. I just like bashing the Sun-Times, I guess. I don't think it's a very good newpaper compared to the Chicago Tribune, which has better writing, and owns better sports teams, I mean, has a better commitment to excellence in journalism. However, the Sun-Times is the only major-market newspaper I know of with a pro wrestling column. And Ebert has been worthless without Siskel anyway.
Crimson G 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2004 He's always been worthless.
Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2004 One of the New York papers used to have a weekly wrestling column, I think it was The Daily News though it may have been Newsday. Can anyone confirm or deny it's (continued) existence?
Guest Dumb Fuck Report post Posted July 28, 2004 Woody Paige is a god. That is all there is to say. Without Woody Paige, ATH would have been cancelled during the Kellerman days and damn sure would be cancelled with nothing but Reverend Bill on all the time. And Skip Bayless needs to be slugged for being an arrogant know it all like that dickweed that writes for Sports Illustrated in the back of the magazine. Whatever the hell his name is. Exactly. But, this is the reason Woody is so annoying now. They're forcing him to always be a rambling, stupid old man... when he wasn't nearly that bad in the beginning, and was actually enjoyable to watch. I'm surprised ATH hasn't been dumped already... or least that the format hasn't been changed. Paige and Mariotti are the only thing that people give a crap about. smh810 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2004 Didn't Skip Bayless start false rumors about Troy Aikman being gay?
Guest Dumb Fuck Report post Posted July 29, 2004 I believe that was him.
alfdogg 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2004 I liked Stephen A. at one point, but he lost me during the recent NBA season. He was good in small doses when he was on Best Damn, but his act got stale VERY quickly once he became a regular for a network. That said, he's still better than Skip Bayless. Guest Dumb Fuck Report post Posted July 29, 2004 5 minutes of Skip Bayless on Rome's show made me yearn to listen to Rome again. And I fucking despise Rome.
TheBigSwigg 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2004 I'm surprised ATH hasn't been dumped already... or least that the format hasn't been changed. Paige and Mariotti are the only thing that people give a crap about. ATH was great when it was Paige, Mariotti, Ryan and Cowlishaw with Kellerman hosting. They all seemed to get along well even if they didn't agree, and their chemistry was what made it entertaining. NOW, it's unbearable. You never know who's going to be on (other than Mariotti) and there is NO chemistry. Stat Boy isn't that bad as a host, but he's still Stat Boy. As for PTI, I really, really hate when it's anyone but Kornheiser, Wilbon, Norman Chad or Bob Ryan. Those four work well interchangeably, everyone else seems to collapse because of the format. Why they put Bayless and Smith on together, I'll never know. They're a charisma vacuum, like a Lance Storm and Steve Blackman tag team. I'll admit, I'm a Paige mark, and I hate Mariotti. But that's mostly because Woody backs the Tennessee Vols, and I bleed orange. I hate Mariotti because he's an ass.
alfdogg 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2004 My lineup would be Either of the Dallas guys Woody Mariotti any of the Boston people not named Jackie McMullan
Slayer 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2004 Mariotti annoys the hell out of me, especially in Showdown when he holds his finger up in anticipation of getting a point (although it makes it funny when SB tells him to put his finger down) In spite of this though, I have to admit that he is crucial to the show
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted July 29, 2004 At least they ditched the new guys they were trying out in the spring. The one was trying to be Woody-lite and the other guy never made a good argument. I think they need to replace Stat Boy with Zack to be honest. That was a solid week once he figured out to give more than 1 pt. for everything.

But that's mostly because Woody backs the Tennessee Vols, and I bleed orange. I hate Mariotti because he's an ass. I disagree about Ryan. His smug, "I'm too good for this show, I won't get involved in childish banter" attitude is more suited for Sports Reporters. He never seemed to fit well on ATH. Then, the one time he tries to be "edgy", he says to smack a woman around. Ryan should have been fired from ESPN immediately, after spouting that garbage. I like Cowlishaw, he probably makes the most sense of anyone on the show, but he's basically just a fill-in now incase one of the Boston boys, or Plaschke isn't on. As for PTI, I hope Tony and Wilbon stop fucking around and don't take any more long breaks. ESPN has to realize PTI is death when anyone replaces them. As for Bayless/Smith... they were on SportsCenter a few times doing "NuSkool vs. Old School"... which was even worse than you can imagine. I hate how ESPN has turned from a reputable sports network... to trying to build "edgy", annoying characters.
Guest Dumb Fuck Report post Posted July 29, 2004 I think ATH would be better with Zack... just give him a month or two to get settled in to the show. Reali's grown on me... but I still don't think he has the personality to host a show.
Guest Mindless_Aggression Report post Posted July 29, 2004 Skip Bayless may kill my love of sports if he continues to be on that show. And yet, I can't turn away. It's so so awful, as he makes idiotic point after idiotic point, stumbles all over his words and then makes a bad James Brown joke at Steven A. Smith who laughs like it's the funniest thing in the history of everything ever. Why can't they just get a few of the Sports Reporters crew? Fuck, why can't they get the Trampoline bear? It'd be better than watching those 2 ruin America with the most pointless 30 minutes in television history.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2004 ESPN needs to go the Fox Sports Net route and just have a "sport show" hosted by comedians! I would like to see Nick Bakay and Jay Mohr be the regular guest hosts of PTI.
TheBigSwigg 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2004 ESPN needs to go the Fox Sports Net route and just have a "sport show" hosted by comedians! I would like to see Nick Bakay and Jay Mohr be the regular guest hosts of PTI. The only problem is, BDSSP is horrible and impossible to watch. If I want to watch a sports show, I want to at least here a valid opinion. I don't want to hear some guy say something to get a laugh.

the max 0 Report post Posted August 3, 2004 We have nothing locally. Mornings are the two burnouts from the old morning show who talk Fort Myers Miracle baseball (our rookie league team, property of the Twins) almost all the time. I could understand when they talked about Ricky Williams retiring, but they were hanging up on people who disagreed with them (They said that Ricky was wrong for it, but wouldn't listen to anyone else's opinion on it.) After them, it's ESPN Radio's national shows 'The Herd', who I personally can't stand. After him, it's Dan Patrick, which is usually good. Then it's back to local sports with a guy who only knows baseball. Normally that'd be good, but he doesn't know shit about it.
