The discussion for the quarterback thread seems to have died down, so I figure I'd make another similar thread because I have nothing better to do.

 

So, which types of running backs do you folk prefer? The North/South, pound it up the middle backs like Jerome Bettis, or the East/West, run past you/juke you out of your helmet, ala Barry Sanders?

 

I didn't respond in the first one I made, since I honestly didn't have a strong opinion for either. However, I tend to prefer the speedy, jukey types for a halfback, but I want fullbacks to be bruisers.

 

I feel that this type of thread can go to other sports, but I mostly follow football, basketball, and some rugby, so if someone thinks a baseball, hockey, soccer/football or whatever position has variation to warrant such a topic, I don't have patent rights on this. Think I'll shut up now...

As a fan, watching the game, I would want a east/west jukey runner. It is much more entertaining with a Sanders type running back.

 

But if I were building a team, I want a North/South runner who I know I can give the ball to 3 times and will get 10 yards.

An E/W runner doesn't need a great line to get you some yards. Witness Barry Sanders and the o-lines he ran behind. But with a N/S guy, he needs a good line, unless he's big enough to just run everyone over. So I'd prefer a guy who can get out of a jam, and that'd be your E/W runner.

I seem to recall Barry having to shake past plenty of guys who were already in the backfield as soon as he got the ball. Besides, two good o-linemen doesn't make the whole line good.

I'd rather have the north-south back. You don't need flash and pizzazz in the running game: just hand the ball off and let the guy grind out the yards. Of course you need a good offensive line, but as expensive as RBs and QBs are, there's no excuse for a team having a poor line.

So how many teams had 2 guys from the offensive line be in the pro bowl in back to back seasons? Making the pro bowl doesn't make you good, it makes you great (especially on the line where there is usually no popularity contest factor involved).

Excuse me? The O-line is the biggest popularity contest of all the positions for the Pro Bowl. Once you make it once, you have to basically suck ass for a season or two to lose your spot.
