Doom 3 pirated en masse prerelease

The BBC reports that thousands of illegal copies of the game are downloaded the weekend before the PC shooter finally hits stores.

Just days before the game was set to hit US stores, pirated versions of Doom 3 began to appear on peer-to-peer networks and newsgroups. While such occurrences are nothing new--illegal copies of games often appear before their release--the scale of the Doom 3 piracy is far wider than normal.

The BBC is reporting that thousands of copies of Doom 3 were downloaded over the weekend. At one point, the network's technology correspondent Alfred Hermida counted 50,000 peer-to-peer users downloading the 1.5 GB game--$2,749,500 worth of software at Doom 3's $54.99 sticker price. Other reports put the figure between 30,000 and 20,000--$1,649,700 and $1,099,800 of software, respectively.

Whichever figures are accurate, it is clear the piracy of Doom 3 is costing developer id Software and publisher Activision millions of dollars. However, it was unclear what steps the publisher was taking to stop the piracy, given that it had not commented as of press time.

Those who wish to obtain Doom 3 by legitimate means can purchase the game starting tomorrow, or, in some cases, tonight at retailers holding midnight release parties. Gamers who download the game illegally could face a maximum penalty of $100,000 per infringement for copyright violations. However, copies of the game purchased at stores breaking the retail embargo are perfectly legal.

Um... ouch.

Can't think of any way to segue this into an actual discussion... I'll leave that part up to you people. :P

This game kicks so much ass. Runs good on my 2400+, radeon 9500pro. Wonderful job on setting the atmosphere.

I'll admit to having sticker shock -- 55 bucks for it. I'm sure that was preemptive because they knew the warez folks would be out in full force. Hell the alpha was leaked how long ago? Too bad it happens to a developer that brings so much to computer gaming like Id does. How many games are still running on Q3 engines?

I've seen it for download on bit torrent and irc for a while now, so this isn't exactly news to me.

If it's a good game, enough people will buy it to turn a profit, for years and years.

Thats my stance, piracy isn't THAT big a deal...

normally I fully endorse piracy, but Activision is responsible for the fully awesome Return to Castle Wolfenstein. So everyone promise not to steal Doom 3, as long as they promise to drop everything and make a Wolf sequel.

You know, I've seen RtoCW get some lackluster reviews before, but I agree with you - I loved that game.

Its a fun game, I got it earlier this year at Target for $5 when I got the Return of the King DVD. But, not having broadband really sucks because the multiplayer stuff looks really awesome.

Bleh..

and technically I think it should have been "there are enough non-murdering suckers out there"

or "Honest non-murdering suckers" heck... what is the opposite of a murderer? A doctor or someone else that saves lives?

Although I must admit I agree with UYI to a certain extent but this is one of those debates that is really old.

Who cares about piracy?

There are still enough honest suckers out there who will buy it legitimately.

Who cares about murder? There are enough cops in the world, after all.

UYI

And who cares about prostitution?

:P
