MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted August 7, 2004 Os win 3-1, as Julio made the 3 run save interesting at least. 5 wins in a row. Tejada got his 100th RBI (5 years in a row) which is the most in the majors so far. This has been a pretty good week.

Guest Anglesault Report post Posted August 8, 2004 Umpire made an awful call on Cairo today, calling him out at third when he tried to stretch a double into a triple. Cairo was actually very safe, and for a *quick* play, it really wasn't even all that close. So, Cairo then turns around and hits a triple in his next at bat. Guest Anglesault Report post Posted August 8, 2004 Oh, and in case anyone wants to know, in keeping with his trend of busting out funky pitches (ie. The eephus) Duque actually threw a quick pitch today. It's almost like he's just as concerned with entertaining the fans as winning
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 Christ, seeing Paul Abbott being run out there every fifth day is such a disgrace. How the hell do you walk 9 people in 5 2/3 IP?!? And the fact he has the nerve to complain to the umpire about a call is a joke. Guess what, when you walk 8 guys you aren't getting the benefit of the doubt on the 9th. I am still trying to figure out what excuse they can provide for Gavin Floyd not being called up. If he can't out perform Abbott, at this point, then he is the most overhyped prospect ever. The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 Nice Cubs win today. Congratulations to 300-game winner Greg Maddux, and here's hoping you win many more before you hang it up. Also, I hope your elbow is okay. We don't wanna lose ya. Farnsworth made it interesting today, of course. The media needs to give him a personality of sorts, like get footage of him tripping down a flight of stairs or something, so that we can all laugh at Mr. Can't Do Anything Right. Just a thought. Guest Anglesault Report post Posted August 8, 2004 (edited) Nice Cubs win today. Congratulations to 300-game winner Greg Maddux, . IP H R ER BB K HR 5.0 7 4 4 3 3 0 He didn't so much win as survive. I'm sure even he would have liked to have a less vulture-like 300. Edited August 8, 2004 by Anglesault
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 I was at the Tigers / Red Sox game last night (actually had great seats several rows behind home plate), which was actually my first visit to Comerica. Beautiful place and obviously much more comfortable and clean than Tiger Stadium. Pedro was basically amazing except for one inning where he struggled. My friend and I were just in awe of how foolish he was making the Tigers look all night, as struck out 11 and got them to ground out and pop out on many occassions. Not really news, but seeing him pitch in person (and actually up close) was a whole different experience. One thing that bugged me, though, were the notable off-days for Pudge and Manny. I mean, if Pedro isn't pitching, that game is basically a waste, since Manny and Pudge are arguably their respective team's biggest attractions. And congrats to Maddux. I was watching the beginning of the game on my little portable TV on the way to Detroit and figured his shot at 300 was going to have to come another day, since he didn't look to have good command. I wasn't able to see Farnsworth make it interesting, which is probably fine, since I got my fill of that during Maddux's last start. It's nice to see Alou starting to slide out of that slump, but Sosa has been horrid lately. To the point where the majority of the fans are going to completely turn on him. A slump's a slump, but he's striking out at least twice a game, if not three times. If I'm not mistaken, he struck out four times today. For a clean-up hitter to not put the ball in play four times in one game is inexcusable. I know the end is nearing for him, but it'd be nice to see him get some of his shit worked out. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 Millwood might be out for the season, Wagner is pegged to return in September, Abbott can't find the strike zone, we traded a reasonable pitching prospect for Doug F'n Jones, and we're 5.5 games out. This season is one step away from disaster.
Gert T 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 On espn.com Tony La Russa said that Larry Walker was going to bat 2nd or 4th, while Walker said he was batting 5th, can somebody make up their minds. Personally I say put him at 6th.
the max 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 Wild game in Detroit. Detroit has 5 homers for 6 runs, Boston has 9 runs and they've been trading the lead.
Guest Staravenger Report post Posted August 8, 2004 Definitely NOT a pitchers duel in Detroit. Yankees are somewhat murdering the Blue Jays 8-1, including a Grand Slam home run by Bernie in the bottom of the 1st, and Shef with a 2-run homer in the 4th. strummer 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 I might be missing obvious stuff here, but has there been a team in the National League in the last decade or longer that has been as good as the Cardinals have been this year? They are going to sweep the Mets and are inching close to 40 games over .500. A Yankee/Cardinals World Series almost seems like a lock now.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 I still don't see why everyone thinks that just because the Yanks and Cards have such great records, they're locks for the WS. Haven't past postseason series taught us anything? It's not always about the best team over the span of five months. It's about the best team in the span of three weeks; whichever team can get hot at the right time. The Giants and Braves had great records last season and both made early exits to underdogs. I'm not saying we won't see New York and St. Louis in the WS, but I'd bet one of them won't make it there.
Bored 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 This will be the 10th year of the Wild Card and so far there has only been two World Series ('95 and '99) where the teams with the best record in both leagues made it. Of course a Yankees/Cardinals World Series isn't a lock by any stretch.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 Brad Penny left the game with an injured arm after 2/3 of an inning. This appears to be the same injury that he's been dealing with all season and one of the reasons I thought the trade the Dodgers made with the Marlins was stupid. Penny's great when healthy, but he left his last start with the Marlins because of the arm, so it's not like this is news or anything.

Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 I guess they thought that this series with the Yankees could be the turning point in the season that got them going towards a postseason run. Or it could just be another case of the manager playing the role of scapegoat, despite having next to nothing work with; injuries; little production from your two best players and having your Cy Young pitcher underachieve all season before being placed on the DL. Yep, but they would be in contention right now if they had a better manager.
strummer 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 So in St. Louis in the top of the ninth the Mets rally and have the bases loaded. The tieing run coming to the plate, with Mike Piazza still available. and .. and... Joe McEwing is forced to hit because the Mets are out of infielders. McEwing hits a little blooper to short and the game ends with Piazza on deck. If that situation doesn't sum up the Mets in one fell swoop, I don't know what does. Mind you that Piazza has been in a horrific slump, but things like this have constantly happened to the Mets since the last out of the 2000 World Series. The Mets went 11 years without making postseason play, and at this rate, it might be even longer this time.
Bored 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 A's/Twins game is in the 18th inning. Neither team has scored the last nine innings. Edit: Jermaine Dye finally breaks it up with an rbi single. Now up to Dotel. Edit 2: See I just knew the A's had to last out the Twins bullpen to get to Mulholland. Two more runs put the A's up 6-3 in the 18th. Bored 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2004 I really, really, really, really don't want to say it already but...Octavio Dotel is a bust as a closer. Nearly blows it again today, giving up a two run homer to Morneau, but hangs on by the skin of his teeth for the 6-5 win in the 18th. Oh and the A's assure themselves their first winning road trip in nearly three months.

Yep, but they would be in contention right now if they had a better manager. They had to do something. A team that could have won 90 games last year had they had a decent bullpen shouldn't be on pace to lose 90 games the next year (I'd assume, I haven't really looked into it, but it's been a horrible season) with basically the same roster. It's not his fault that Wells, Delgado, and Halladay have all underachieved and been injured, but even if you go back to last year, his team had the best pitcher and 2nd best player (according to the award voting) and only finished in 3rd place. The Cards are on pace to win 106 games. The last team to do that was the 1998 Braves. In the last 25 years, the '86 Mets are the only other team to win that many. Guest Staravenger Report post Posted August 9, 2004 Astros drop 2 of 3 to the Expos, at home. Clemens gets the loss despite allowing only 1 ER in 7 IP. That's a real bitch. The Astros seem to always either just beat the crap out of another team, or lose a 1-0 or 2-1 game...and usually it's when Clemens pitches. Bitches...
