Summerslam 1993

Recommended Posts

I just watched this event last night. It's not as good as some of the NWA stuff from the late 80's but it was still a VERY Good PPV. Minus the terrible Gonzales/Taker match (at least it was better than the horrible WM 9 match) and the Ludvig/Jannetty match (Borga really sucked, Jannetty tried.. he sold good and made his offense look good, but Borga was terrible) every other match was good/decent. I never watched the Yoko/Luger match though, so that might have been terrible.

Perfect/Michaels was good, Doink/Bret was very good, Lawler/Bret was decent, Steiners vs Heavenly Bodies was good, Tatanka and the Gunns vs Headshrinkers and Bam Bam was good, Ramon/Dibiase was decent... overall a very decent event that never gets any praise. Your thoughts?

Or everyone (everyone = me) expected Mr. Perfect to beat Shawn Michaels and instead we had our first screwjob IC title match at Summer Slam.

That could have been SO much better ...

Aside from that, the only really memorable match on the card was the tag title match.

I was in the "Perfect is going to win" boat. And yes, it could have been much better considering the participants involved.

I've not seen SS '93 since it aired, but I remember loving the Bret/Doink and Bret/Lawler parts. Lawler played the "cowardly heel gets his" part perfectly. He made me hate him when he was faking his injury and I loved every second of Hart beating him. What made it even better was Hart not letting go of the Sharpshooter despite threats of a reversed decision. I thought that whole segment was chock-full of great story-telling.

I think it gets a bad reputation because of the hype jobs for Perfect/HBK and Luger/Yokozuna, and failing to pull the trigger on both of them.

On paper, the show isn't too apealing, but it's definitely one of the most under-rated WWF/E PPV's of all time.

I like the show, but there's too many cheap finishes. They had 3 big matches - Luger/Yoko, Michaels/Perfect, Hart/Lawler and all of them ended in a DQ/Count-out. The Hart/Lawler one was done in a decent fashion, with Bret just snapping and not releasing the sharpshooter, but the others were a letdown.

And why did Luger (and the rest of the faces) get so excited after his match? Surely he knew he couldn't win the title by count-out, and yet he partied like it was 1999.

^ I think it was because Yokozuna had just been on such a rampage since putting away Hogan that the point they wanted to show is that Yokozuna COULD be defeated in some fashion. At least that's how I saw it.

Edit: It was just so awful even Yokozuna had to make Luger look good.

SS 93 is one of my old favourites. I REALLY wanted Perfect to beat Michaels though, that pissed me off. And everything with Bret was awesome. The 6 man is much better than it appears on paper, as well. Too bad for the shitty ending of the PPV.

Yokozuna vs Lex Luger isn't bad, and is definitly one of Yokoz best matches, but his best was a cage match against Bret Hart where Bret carried him to like ****. I think it's available on an old Coliseum Video comp,

I know Bret/Yoko had a Cage Match on Inside the WWF. I wouldn't call it **** but it was on a Yokozuna scale probably.

Maybe that's not the match I'm thinking of then, but I definitly remember Meltzer saying once that Bret and Yoko went **** in a cage.

Jannetty v. Borga was more funny than anything. It was the classic "Guy who cares" v. "Guy who doesn't care, since he'll be pushed anyway"

I think that may have been San Fransisco (8/20/93) which is available on fan cam. Either that or one of the other shows from that CA tour.

I condemn any PPV with Luger main eventing in singles.

Then you condeem alot of good NWA and WCW PPV's.

Great American Bash 88 & Starrcade 88 were both very good PPVs in my opinion, and were probably Luger's "biggest" main event matches ever.
