Riddick Bowe to Make Comeback

By Rich DiBona

Former World Heavyweight Champion, Riddick Bowe is planning a return to the ring after a near 8 year layoff. Bowe plans to fight on September 25 at the Fire Lake Casino in Shawnee, Oklahoma. No opponent has been named as of yet. Bowe served a 17 month prison sentence for kidnapping and was released this past May. While in jail he lost a large amount of weight and now feels fit to return to the ring.

"I truly believe that I'm the best fighter out there, especially when I get in good shape," said Bowe. "The division is wide open, so why not?"

Bowe won the heavyweight championship in 1992 in the "Fight of the Year" with Evander Holyfield. A year later he suffered his only professional defeat losing the title to Holyfield in a rematch. They ended up meeting in a rubber match 2 years later where Bowe stopped Holyfield in the 8th. In 1996 Bowe won a pair of notorious bouts against Andrew Golota. While up on the cards both times, Golota threw low blows until he was disqualified. Bowe then retired with a record of 40-1.

Bowe reportedly lost between 50 and 100 pounds in prison while on a strict workout program including much running.

"Doing it that way, I don't lose focus," Bowe said. "I don't have time to get in trouble or go do other things. My weight stays down. I get sharper. At one point, I used to think I got prettier, but that's not the case."

We'll see how this works

Pfft. Didn't he learn from Tyson? Just step away and let the younger, better fighters get the spotlight.

I remember one of those Golota fights. I think the crowd actually started to riot and someone smashed a cell phone over Golota's head. (ouch)

Wasn't he on an HBO special which showcased the fact that since he began fighting his speech has become increasingly slurred? He's gonna get killed in there, literally.

That was Meldrick Taylor who had to go to one of the three or four states without an athletic commission to box, because there is absolutely no way any state with an athletic commission would let him box.

Riddick Bowe is the guy who became a mall security guard and eventually kidnapped his kids. My thoughts, is that the heavyweight division is so abysmal, that if Riddick Bowe rattles off three or four straight wins, he could become a top ten contender.

He shouldn't come back. He would just probably get beat like Tyson did.

Bowe vs. Tyson! Imagine the money from that. Old man Bowe and (way) Over the Hill Tyson square off in a 10 Round Heavyweight Fight. If Tyson wins, he gets a sandwich, and if Bowe wins, he gets a new walker.

OK, I'm just kidding before anyone gets offended.

The only way Tyson vs. Bowe would happen is if the following stipulations happen.

If Bowe wins, He gets to kidnap Tyson's family.

If Tyson wins, he gets to eat Bowe's Children's heart.

Everyone goes home happy

Didn't he get brain damage from his fights with Andrew Golota?

Yeah he was slurring his speech in the HBO special, on him and Golota fights.

Golota beat his ass both times. I think they should fight again.

HA! Lewis would've kicked his ass. Bowe will get killed out there, if he decides to fight a real fighter. Not some cheap fighter, but a real fighter. That guy is past his prime, and it'll last about 1:00 into the first round.

Let's not go THAT far. Tyson, who was out of shape and past his prime survived four rounds before the tank emptied and Williams laid a beating on him.

But if Bowe fights a legit contender thats not past their prime, he probably has very little chance of winning.

On Cold Pizza it said Bowe's fighting a British fighter (Ironic considering all the Tyson comparsions in the thread) named Wayne Llewelyn, who was last seen getting knocked out by Jameel McCline in the first round. Let's go to the tale of the tape

Wayne Llwelyn

Age: 34

Stance: Southpaw

Height: 6'3''

Hometown:Beckenham, England

Record: 27-5 (20 KOs)

Last fight: April 15th, 2004 ( Loss via a 1st round KO to Jameel McCline)

Riddick Bowe

Age: 37

Stance: Orthodox

Hometown: Brooklyn, NY

Record: 40-1 (KO 32)

Last Fight: December 14th, 1996 (Win via DQ over "The Nutcracker" Andrew Golota)

The two seem pretty evenly matched (IE they both suck). I bet Bowe wins via stoppage in the 7th or 8th round. Llwelyn seems bad enough for Bowe to beat.

Shit, it's been nearly EIGHT YEARS since he fought? Didn't realize it was that long ago. He's gonna have some serious ring rust.

I remember Bowe in prison said Lennox Lewis was ducking HIM about a year or so back.

Didn't Bowe throw the WBC title in the trash rather then defend it against Lewis? This was sometime in the early 90s.

In my opinion, he was a good fighter. The only thing that dragged him down is being lazy and his desire to eat.

Riddick Bowe was a damn good fighter in his prime. I think he had the size and power to give Lewis problems in his prime, but now it would be a sideshow. Maybe if Foreman still wants to make a comeback he could fight Bowe.

Nope, I believe Foreman cancelled out, it could be Holmes though. My dad maintains that Larry Holmes in his prime could have beat George Foreman at any point in his career. In fact my dad was ready to shell out the $40 to watch that atrocity.
