the max 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2004 Oh, and I'm kind of upset that Sweden's gone, since seeing if they won, it would have been cool/strange to see Sundin skate around the ACC ice with a Cup or some sorts in his hands. Especially since he's never going to get anywhere near anything like that in the NHL.

CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2004 And I think it's fitting that a Slovakia team featuring Marion Hossa and Zdeno Chara lost a big game in Toronto. At least those 2 guys are used to it. Yeah...about as fitting as seeing Marty Brodeur put the boots to a team in the ACC.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2004 I know it'll never happen, but can you fathom the reaction in both Canada & Europe if both the Finns & the Czechs upset the Americans & the Canadians? And, on a similar note, can you fathom the apathy that will run wild here in the States?

treble 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2004 It's not just the States. The Toronto crowd wouldn't exactly be thrilled (there'd probably be a lot of no-shows) and CBC's ratings would plummet.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2004 TC, if Canada lost it would be front page news, and I mean the literal front page, and it would dominate Sportscentre. If the Americans lost, it wouldn't even be on the front page of the sports section, and would get maybe 2 minutes on Sportscenter. I mean, PRE-SEASON football got more attention then the World Cup does.
the max 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2004 I've had nothing better to do, so I've been watching more than my fair share of Sportscenter and they haven't been covering it much at all. Should America lose, it'll get the same laughable treatment that hockey always gets on SC.

Guest Olympic Slam Report post Posted September 11, 2004 And the Americans are out. Can't believe i had to look at the second page of the forum to find this thread. Not much of a shocker. Yes, the U.S is probably better overall, but in a single elimination tourney against an equally NHL caliber team like Finland; there are no upsets. For guys like Modano, Leetch and Cheilos, 8 years was 8 years ago. Too bad, I was hoping we could at least defend our 96' title.
Guest Rrrsh Report post Posted September 11, 2004 I know that I stated earlier in this thread that Finlad was my Darkhorse. And I am glad that I am as smart as I think I am ( ) But damn, I was on the fence on them beating the US.

Red Baron 0 Report post Posted September 11, 2004 I wouldn't call Finland a darkhorse team in this tournament. There team was probably the second best team in the tourament. Next to the best goalie in the tournament in Kippy, have great leadership with Koivu, well structered attack and defence, and a defence that is stronger than most of the other teams in this tournament. treble 0 Report post Posted September 11, 2004 Even though Luongo isn't exactly a slouch, I'm still a little worried with Brodeur out. And those little 9/11 patches are a nice touch.

treble 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2004 Shit, I was sure that game was lost once they tied it up 6 seconds after Draper's goal. And that shot of Gretzky when Lecavallier missed the shot and then scored a second later was awesome.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2004 Lecavallier goal reminded me of Henderson goal. Lecavallier fell, out of play, puck stayed in, rebound, game winner.
Guest Olympic Slam Report post Posted September 12, 2004 Vinnie's shot was a beauty. You can bet I'll be practicing that in warm-up before my next game. At least ONE of the North American teams got in.

nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2004 Gotta love ESPN cutting to fucking COLLEGE FOOTBALL at 9. Fucking assholes. I wasn't too mad about it, Max. They showed the game in it's entirety, and then switched to what they would have been showing had the game not gone to OT. I'd have liked some post-game wrap up, but the bar that I was watching the game at had people there to see the game that wasn't being shown because of the OT, and they'd have been doubly pissed if it there was 10-15 minutes of Melrose talking instead of their game. I really thought that the Czechs were going to win when it went to OT. I just thought that the momentum would be all CR and the Canadians wouldn't be able to overcome it. I was wrong. Now, I think the Canadians are too fired up, and the Finns are DOA. And those little 9/11 patches are a nice touch.I couldn't agree more.
the max 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2004 I was pissed because I had watched the entire game and wanted to see it end. I was even more pissed when it ended about 4 minutes into OT, and the football fans would have missed a grand total of 10 minutes from their game, as the game never starts at the top of the hour. So, a brief intermission report, four minutes of OT. That's about 20 minutes. Not even 10 minutes of a football game. For god's sake, they have Classic and ESPNEWS as networks too. Pretty mcuh everyone said that the US, Canada and Sweds were the powers before the tourney. Now, everyone but the Germans were given a chance to win, but the Russians, Slovaks, Czecks and Fins would all be "darkhorses" in an 8 team tourney.
Brush with Greatness 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2004 Actually, I called Canada v. Fins before the tournament too. Thought that the style that Finland typically produces would benefit them come the small ice. Over the past few years, no team has impressed me as much at the international level as Finland has. Granted, alot of this is based on their World Junior performances, but Finland appears to be developing a hybrid of European skill/North American grit and they will only continue to get better. As well, Finland was the only team apart from Canada who I have faith in their goaltender to make the big saves when needed and who had the potential to steal games. Esche, Bryzgalov, Tellqvist/Salo, Vokoun, those guys just don't inspire that kind of faith in me and honestly, I couldn't see any of those goalies carrying his team to the finals. On top of that, none of the teams of the aformentioned goaltenders were strong enough outside of their goaltending to beat teams that may be inferiorly skilled but have superior goaltending. That's why I picked Canada v. Finland. For what it's worth, I thought Sweden had the third best shot at making the finals and they didn't even crack the semi's. Whoa, whoa, whoa ... you're local feed cut the game off before it ended??? In Mass. we got the entire game, OT included, but then it switched to the football game already in progress. I was at a sports bar, and presumed that they were showing the standard espn2 feed, but maybe they used a satellite or some equivalent to show the entire game. We got the full intermission report while they zamboni'd the ice, and then the full OT of hockey before it switched away. I take back what I said, you have every right to be bullshit. the max 0 Report post Posted September 13, 2004 Yeah, the third period ended almost right at 9, David Amber and Moron Melrose came on and said "Some of you may see the intermission and OT, others will get college football" They waited for a few seconds and the college football game came on.
