AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2004 But who's going to make shitty Marvel Comics-based games? Oh, that's right --- Marvel seems to have actually developed quality control for their licenses. Bah. Toodles, Akklaim. -=Mike I though activison made the spider-man games? Akklaim should go to Midway aren't they like sister companies?Sharing NBA Jam and MK? Midway'd be wise to join in picking the corpse clean. I think they wanted to put NBA Jam on the Midway Arcade Treasures 2 collection but couldn't since Acclaim owned the name. Although it may be too late to add it on there. Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2004 Acclaim's whole strategy (especially in the 90s) was to acquire a popular hot license and release a game for as many consoles as quickly as possible. Oh, and I hated them ever since I got a copy of the first South Park PC game a few years back. That game sucked ass.

El Psycho Diablo 0 Report post Posted September 2, 2004 I don't like celebrating when a company goes down. (Unless it was EA, in that case..man, it'd be hard to resist..) What about a company like Interplay? A great development team in Black Isle Studios got screwed over, because of large investments in crap like Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel? Yeah, sure..Acclaim may have put out crap, but they're not the only company who puts out less than stellar games. *shrugs* I guess it's hard to be in the video game business, when the largest company can repeatedly screw over their customers, and release barely-upgraded software, and profit from it.. Besides, the LOW games weren't too bad, and actually TRIED to show some actual gameplay improvement, unlike the Smackdown series.

Who celebrates when a company goes out of business? I mean, it's not like they're all secret nazi's or something. Sure they made crappy games most of the time, but was anyone being forced to play them? Nope.

AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted September 2, 2004 "But still. Who celebrates when a company goes out of business? I mean, it's not like they're all secret nazi's or something. Sure they made crappy games most of the time, but was anyone being forced to play them? Nope." While it isn't as severe now, when a ton of crappy games flooded the market, they were a major part of the 80's video game crash. So frankly, if Acclaim was basically putting nothing good on the market, not having any sort of positive effect on it, and putting out crappy games that people too dopey to know better would buy because of licensing--that hurts a lot of developers who actually give a damn and try to make good games. You're wrong about the first part, though. Acclaim was a secret neo-Nazi organization keeping Hitler's head alive in a jar. Now they'll have to pull the plug and feed on the Furher's head cheese or find another company where crappy hack programmers are welcome. It's not like there's a shortage of those. Kemco might be hiring...or The New Acclaim, THQ. I don't like celebrating when a company goes down. (Unless it was EA, in that case..man, it'd be hard to resist..) Yeah. The sad reality is that even if EA started running their business like Acclaim, it would still take at least 20 years for them to go out of business. And that's assuming that they'd tank with the Madden series and the NFL would be forced to yank the license from them.

True enough, I'm just being a prick anyway. Heh, I noticed that about you. However, I do understand how, given the way their bosses probably were, that the programmers would adopt an attitude of not giving a damn and just make any licensed crap they could. You would think when Acclaim was losing a lot of money they'd have reversed course and tried to fix the problem... Then again, I don't think any of us knew just how bad things were. Perhaps there was a lot of lying to investors--in which case we'll probably see lawsuits coming soon.
Anya 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2004 When MAT 2 comes out they'll lose the best thing about them, MK II for SNES being the best home version. MAT 3 needs NBA JAM TE.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted September 4, 2004 I actually played a demo of Red Star (X-box) up at EB. It's still listed as coming out on the 22nd--but you know how these things work... Graphics are pretty good, although I wouldn't call them X-Box optimized. Yeah, it's got Multi-platform Syndrome, but it still looks rather good. Sound effects are good, but music in the demo level was a yawner. It was unobtrusive, forgettable, generic bgm that neither excites or annoys. Maybe later levels are better in that aspect, but maybe you add a custome soundtrack or simply pump up your stereo. Gameplay--now here's where things get a little more interesting. It plays much like an old-school shooter/beat 'em up. Think Cannon Spike. In fact, like CS, I had to dodge through a wave of bullets like an in overhead shooter to blast my enemy. There's also a powerful super attack you can charge up to absorb enemy fire and dish out damage yourself. You have access to a regular gun (whether or not you get more powerful weapons I'm not sure), varied melee attacks, your super move, lock-on, and you can block. Blocking, at least as Nikata, put a glowing force field around your character, which is helpful because of the perspective. Most of the time the perspective is a zoomed-out side view, but changes depending on the situation. None of the angles were bad, though. The control is good, with a simple, intuitive layout and it's very responsive, with the "lock on" the only minor quibble. Holding down R locks on, but only if the "target" is rather close. If you have R held down and walk in range of the target, it doesn't seem to auto-lock on. You'll have to release R and hold it again, otherwise you'll just be fixed in the direction you were in. I guess the purpose of that is to double as a strafe button, though. So while I'd have to play more to actually tell if it is a worthwhile game, it's leaps and bounds above what I'd expect from Acclaim, and seems to actually be a damn good game. BUTT 0 Report post Posted September 4, 2004 MAT 3 needs NBA JAM TE. The problem with that would be that they would have to get the rights to use the names of all the players who were in the game, and well as the rights to use the NBA and team names. That would end up costing an extremely large amount of money which probably couldn't be made up for in the profits from the game.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2004 Yeah--so you'd have to track down the PS1 or Saturn versions of TE to get the closest thing to the arcade experience. Although the CPU was rather cheap in the 32-bit ones.

Jericholic82 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2004 RIP ACCLAIM Actually the Royal Rumble game for snes was pretty good and as was wwf raw for snese/sega(which I still own a copy of) I liked asb 05(at least it was only 39 bucks), just finished a season today never played out on n64 oddly (well cuz n64 games were way expensive-59.99 compared to pst 49 bucks or lower I rented the south park n64 game and enjoyed it. Lots of funny lines. acclaim was the only company to decently put real entance themes in a cartridge game (attitude for 64) but their late wwf games were bad (hello ecw hardcore revo. as well) this is weird, as I remember that acclaim name from all the way back in the day
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2004 Oh, and a fitting tribute to Acclaim can be found here: http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3134385 Yes, it's a summary of the very worst that Acclaim brought us (arguably).
The Man in Blak 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2004 What, no Batman Forever for the SNES? What a shoddy list. I like the props to T&C Surf Designs, though, despite that the game wasn't really released in 1998. And yeah, everything bad that could have been said about Acclaim is a cliche a hundred times over, so I'll just say that somebody better pick up the developers for All-Star Baseball and make them play exhibition games on MVP Baseball until their eyes melt. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2004 http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager.offset=2&cId=3134385 <=== some positive to balance out the list. Also, that's why I said "arguably." Picking the 10 worst games Acclaim made is no easy task. I think In Your House was worse than Hardcore Revolution, for instance. Wow, graphics that would be passable on SNES or Genesis, but animation that wouldn't? Missing so much about what made WM Arcade fun? Vader turning into Mantaur? What's not to (not) love?
