Guest DeathBecomesYou Report post Posted September 16, 2004 Webb beating B-Boy? Double C beating Shelley? That's well, weird . The rest of the show looks great as usual from IWA.
Guest Evolution Report post Posted September 16, 2004 Well, I just got back from a seven hour trip to Evansville, and I can't say that I regret it. 1. DANNY DANIELS def. "The King of Diamonds" EDDIE KINGSTON in the opening contest with a piledriver. Kingston was completely carried by Daniels in this one--it's very skippable if you get the show on VHS. I hope that Kingston is able to better perform with Marciano in the three-way tag at TPI. 2. MsCHIF def. TRACY BROOKS & MICKIE KNUCKLES after hitting the Desecrator on Mickie. Daizee Haze was left out of this match due to injury (not sure if that's a work or not), and this is what was left behind. Let it be known that I personally think that MsChif looks better in street clothes than in her wrestling outfit. Anyway, Mickie almost killed herself with a suicide dive through the ropes as she fell short and faceplanted into the hardwood floor of the Armory. It was a mostly sloppy match, and it didn't do very well to get the crowd excited. Mickie has new music, by the way, in "Redneck Woman" by Gretchen Wilson (which I prefer to "Fighter", though she still takes the same amount of time to come out to the ring) 3. "Spyder" NATE WEBB def. "The New Age Punisher" B-BOY with a roll up. This is when it starts to get good. Most of the crowd was behind B-Boy, as Nate Webb's entrance wasn't catching on with 90% of the crowd by the conclusion of it. Much like their match at NWA: No Limits and yet still as fresh as the first time I saw it. No Shining Wizard from B-Boy, which, if I remember correctly, led to the roll-up finish. 4. MAD MAN PONDO & CASH FLO (w/ Pearl Harbor) def. CORPORAL ROBINSON & 2 TUFF TONY in an Elimination Falls Count Anywhere Tables Match. Pondo was the sole survivor in the match after Tony turned on Corporal, leading to the final elimination. Oh my. After Webb/B-Boy, this match really dragged the crowd down. I still mark for Pondo's stop sign, and 2 Tuff Tony did a somersault legdrop on Corporal Robinson following the turn, but that was about all that was great about this match. Pondo's turn got no reaction whatsoever. To be honest, most of the guys I were with were too busy looking at Pearl Harbor, who was unfortunately wearing a skort and not a skirt. 5. "Metalhead" STEVE STONE (w/ Jim Fannin) def. JC BAILEY with the White Out. This was after the intermission, and it was relatively inoffensive, but still nothing that really got the crowd going. 6. "Anarchist" ARIK CANNON def. RODERICK STRONG with the Glimmering Warlock. Stiff. It was mostly Strong stiffing Cannon, but Arik got some shots in of his own. Very hard-hitting match. Not much more I can say. 7. "Double C" CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI def. ALEX SHELLEY with Swiss Sleeper Holding. Most of my group that I traveled with agreed that we can't wait to see Double C at TPI. From his opening theme on, I knew that we were in for something else, especially when we saw his entrance attire. Shelley and Claudio were pretty much a perfect fit for each other, as there was absolutely nothing wrong with their match. It wasn't a blowaway spectacular, but it worked very well. 8. "The Phenomenal" AJ STYLES def. MATT SYDAL following the Styles Clash. Following the matchup, it was announced that on 10/21 in Evansville, Styles will compete in a four-way matchup against PETEY WILLIAMS, CHRIS SABIN, and the returning "Fallen Angel" CHRISTOPHER DANIELS. Crazy match, and the match that got the crowd the most excited in the show. Sydal refused to take the Styles Clash from AJ, finding different ways to escape it, but eventually got caught in a rana position (after dodging AJ's discus lariat) and was unable to fight it any longer. Everyone gave it a standing ovation, as these two went full-speed for the duration of the match. 9. "American Dragon" BRYAN DANIELSON wrestled CHRIS HERO to a two out of three falls draw. Danielson scored the first fall with a roll up/bridge combination. Hero evened the match following the Hero's Welcome. The third fall saw both men trapped in a dueling indian dealthlock/Hangman's Clutch variation, and both submitted at the very same time. Referee BRYCE REMSBURG ruled the match a draw. During the match, ARIK CANNON came to ringside, taunting Hero. Afterwards, Danielson tried to return to the locker room alongside Cannon, but was stopped by promoter IAN ROTTEN, who declared that the next time Hero and Danielson face one another in an IWA ring, it will be as part of a sixty minute iron-man match. The crowd wasn't as into this match as much as Styles/Sydal, but it was just as good. The finish was a little weird, but it works to set up Hero/Danielson in the iron-man match. Both of these guys worked a very fantastic match, and I had no quarrels in the way that the match ended, but I still think most of our group wanted one more fall. Seeing this match made me want to see 8/21 Hero/Danielson (which was on sale at the show, of course). 10. PETEY WILLIAMS def. CM PUNK in the main event to retain the IWA World Heavyweight Title via submission with a sharpshooter. Petey got to show some of his stuff against Punk, and I honestly thought this was Punk's match to win the title to have it going into TPI. I don't remember a whole lot about this match, but it unfortunately was hard to compare it to the two matches before it. This show is a solid pick for purchase on DVD or VHS, as Shelly/CC, Styles/Sydal, Dragon/Hero and Williams/Punk range from good to great. The only reason that you wouldn't pick this up is because you're saving your money for TPI, which is understandable. If you got the money, however, I strongly suggest picking up this one. Epic Reine 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2004 IWA:MS is a GREAT place for new, young, and indy wrestlers to get alot of pratice, time, and development. Ian giving Hero/Danielson a 60 min. Iron Man is great. ROH can let them try and show off their best match, and IWA:MS can give them the pratice with longer matches. Good stuff.
DCMaximo 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2004 Kinda strange to see B-Boy job to Nate Webb if they're giving him a title shot. Looks like another good show though, AJ/Sydal was awesome at Simply The Best 5 and Hero/AmDrag sounds well worth the money too.
JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2004 Looks like a pretty good show, no surprise from IWA-MS. I'm sure the shows will get better and better as the weeks go on. I'll definitely be buying this one though, especially for Dragon/Hero.
Slingshot Suplex 0 Report post Posted September 20, 2004 It was a good show mainly for Styles/Sydal, Dragon/ Hero, and Cannon/ Strong. The show pre-intermission , I thought , was kinda lackluster. Even Petey vs Punk, while decent, wasn't as good as I expected. And for all the hype I had seen for the Double C guy, I saw nothing at all out of the guy to get interested in.
