Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 18, 2004 Red Sox vs. Yankees means more than Bonds and a home run record.
Fökai 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 A perfect game is a bigger deal than hitting a home run. I've already witnessed Randy Johnson, Kenny Rogers, David Wells and David Cone throwing perfect games live on television. It's still an mind-boggling feat, nonetheless. But let's talk about rarity. As least with me, I didn't see Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron hit their 700th homer live. Did you?
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted September 18, 2004 I must be missing how showing a chance at a historic at bat makes Bonds more important that his sport. . Are they portraying him as more important than the game at hand? Yes? That answers your question.
Mik 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 It's not just because it's Bonds, though. It's what he's DOING. If Cesar Crespo had a 55 game hitting streak, you'd never guess what would be on ESPN the next game...his every at bat, and people wouldn't exactly be clamoring for the great Cesar Crespo to get the elusive 56. It's the achievement, not the player. It's like arguing with a brick wall. And Staravenger, a HR record is wayyy more important than Yankees/Sox. Let me let you in a little secret. Really, no one who lives outside of the Northeast gives a shit until it happens in the postseason.

I'm not going to start an argument, but I'm in the boat that thinks Bonds didn't hit 700 home runs naturally.

The Yankees didn't come about all of their wins honestly. Therefore, today's game isn't important.
Bored 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 So why wasn't there a Yankees/Red Sox thread created? Do we really need this thread cluttered with conversation about that meaningless series? They're both going to the playoffs and homefield in the baseball playoffs don't mean much at all.
Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 18, 2004 Rivera blows it...I should've guessed. Like I said last week, he's going to screw up in a big situation sooner than later by putting batters on base in close situations like this.

Guest Anglesault Report post Posted September 18, 2004 The Yankees just flat out REFUSE to bring their A game when they need to. It's become a running joke. "We have an important game? Let's play our worst baseball possible!" That is NOT the makings of a World Champion. 4 hits off Arroyo, Embree and Timlin is NOT the makings of a World Champion. I have no idea what is going to happen to these guys. Overpayed fucking primadonnas.
Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 18, 2004 As always, a good game from first pitch, to rain delay, to one out, to rain delay #2, to the final out. Too bad the wrong team won.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted September 18, 2004 Couldn't they subbed Ruben Sierra for Giambi? Giambi ain't gonna hit shit, everyone knows it. But, you see, the Yankees NEED Jason Giambi at this point in a season. Nothing like a fielding liability who goes 0-3 every day in the middle of a pennant race. mike546 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 I blame Rivera and Lofton. What kind of CF stops in mid chase of the ball? I can already see the papers tomorrow ... "Curse Reversed" or something like that ..

Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 18, 2004 Not to sound cold hearted, but the Yankees need to dump Giambis ass to whoever wants him. The guy barely batted .250 last year, gets sick this year, and couldn't hit a ball if he was given a tennis racket. Look to bring Tino Martinez in...or maybe try stealing Ortiz from the Red Sox...or a dancing monkey. ANYTHING!
mike546 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 What did they do wrong? Bad hitting, obviously, but they basically played flawless baseball for 8 innings. Anyhow, its still back to 2.5, which is where we've been for most of the last 3 weeks. And if tomorrows game gets rained out, do you think Torre goes with Moose and Javy on four days rest? Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 18, 2004 Vazquez?! In a high situation game?! Ha, I'd rather see them bring in Wade Boggs to pich than JV.

cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 Why exactly would beating the Yankees out in the AL East be breaking the curse? The Red Sox have finished 1st quite a few times, they just can't ever win the Series. It'd be funny if either the Twins or A's upset the Yankees the 1st round, then the Sox win the AL...and then job out to someone like the Cardinals in 7. Thus keeping two notable things going: 1. The Red Sox cannot beat the Yankees in a meaningful playoff series. 2. The Red Sox cannot win the World Series.
Fökai 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 You guys have no appreciation for history News to me. Now explain why they didn't cut to the Big Unit everytime he had a two strike count. He's third all time in strikeouts, and there's a decent chance that he'll get as far as second now. Is that not important? Its simply not practical. But it's important history that I would have liked to see. They should have found a way. And yet from the "ESPN Sucks" thread... Anglesault Posted: Sep 15 2004, 08:12 PM (alkeiper @ Sep 15 2004, 11:10 PM) Here's a legitimate reason to be upset about the Bonds thing. I do think its worth keeping an eye on. But in Arizona, Randy Johnson has TIED Steve Carlton for 2nd all time in strikeouts. I haven't even seen a mention. And thank God for that. Because ESPNs version of a "mention" would be cutting to his game everytime there's a two strike count.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted September 18, 2004 What did they do wrong? They barely hit the damn ball. This is supposed to be Murderers Row. They weren't exactly facing Clemens out there and they looked like fools. Hes gonna have to pitch in big game soon anyway, Only is absolutely necessary. mike546 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 I didn't mean it in that way. For the last 8 years, it was always the Yankees coming back in the 9th inning at Fenway, and beating their closer. It was always the Yankees with the comebacks. This whole game reminded me of what we used to do to the Sox. EDIT: I keep trying to tell myself this is only one game, and were gonna make the playoffs anyway. But this one really really hurt.

I have no idea what is going to happen to these guys. Overpayed fucking primadonnas. I'd have to agree the Yankees looked pretty shameless out there. I figured the best that Boston could do was take 2, because Arroyo vs. El Duque seems like it shouldn't even be a question. I'm surprised that the game turned out the way it did. And Staravenger, a HR record is wayyy more important than Yankees/Sox. Let me let you in a little secret. Really, no one who lives outside of the Northeast gives a shit until it happens in the postseason. Here's a secret for you: the Red Sox and Yankees have national fanbases and people were looking forward to the game. I know I was. I'd much rather watch two rival teams go at it than see every at-bat of a steroid-filled prick with a goofy-looking head try to artificially knock his 700th out of the park. I'm surprised he didn't say anything about how he tried not to hit it in Milwaukee because he'd be ashamed to get the homer in such a big, bad, racist town. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2004 Today we've got game two of the Red Sox/Yankees series. Jon Lieber vs. Derek Lowe, 1pm ET. Presumably on Fox. The SF Giants host the San Diego Padres, David Wells vs. Jason Schmidt. The Padres are four back of the wild card, and if they fall 5 games back, I have to believe they're finished. Oakland @ Seattle, Tim Hudson vs. Cha Seung Baek. The A's are just a game up on the Angels, while Ichiro continues to chase Sisler. Ichiro currently has 235 hits, which ties him for 24th on the single season list.
